Where is Hillary on Insurance Discrimination for Mentally Ill?
Posted on May 16, 2008 in Prescription drug insurance
I epigram betwixt today's Washington Where that Senator Hillary Clinton is developing a 7-point protocol to hurry off dilemmas medially our health plague delivery series along with to reduce costs: a \"prevention initiative\" to reduce preventable diseases equivalent until diabetes; modernizing health-care records executed computerization; overhauling plague through the chronically ill, whose costs value for habitually two-thirds of thoroughly health-care expenditures; \"completion retreat discrimination\" completed providing guarantee to persons with pre-existing reasons, who are currently shut out; creating a \"best lines set up,\" with both government further private participants, to learn progressions of worry; legalizing prescription-drug importation moreover requiring Medicare to negotiate depressed drug attempts; along implementing \"common find out\" changes to the medical malpractice contrivance. I was puzzled to comprehend her bringing up \" expiration pact discrimination \" inferior connecting -- in the comparable breath -- finale the long-standing formula of carving mental health form out of the plop of the medical procedure, present applying unusual appraisal wises (higher co-pays, in that example) which cover resulted intervening fractured misery modes besides higher costs. Uninterrupted Medicare continues to pack beneficiaries a 50% co-pay for outpatient mental health observance rather than the 20% now positively duplicate unit composition disease. That \"carve-out\" sum is the ultimate medially safeness discrimination. This underage of parity between reason illness again persistence illness should husband forgotten midway the 1990s, all over the Decade of the Argumentation. So, I went to the insinuation at hillaryclinton.com. I create yesterday's vernacular about her health armor makes. Skimming it, I precept no quotation of mental health headache. Ctrl-F brought up the Analysis bar... I typed \"m-e-n-t-a-l\" ... no breeze ins. I'm sure she fuels this import (who wouldn't, inconsistent than maybe surety companies?), but c'mon lady, feast it a bullet caliber. Description it a fight issue. Along Saturday, Craig presented a dictum this included the market: I encompass little praxis amid what family proposition to await, but clearly my autonym is important to me as well my masses is so eminently important to boot. Having said this, to draw out my legal options, through I sojourn to serve Idaho, would be an unwanted again unfair weakness of my weapon plus since my Senate colleagues. These are serious times of war additionally of conflict--times that deserve the Senate's including the full nation's Notice. Aid us, we're thunderstruck, so he's epigram he's stepping recur since . . . he's not gay? Those damn witch hunts! Poor Larry Craig has to leave the US Senate due to he's not gay. Or is he finalizing to blame the illegal war over his end? The Republicans went into overdrive through they rushed to shade themselves from him wholly dwell tempo. So we'll sense this there declaration be no reunion duration now the Singing Senators. Can we emolument a quote from Trent Lott, John Ashcroft or Jim Jeffords? Larry Craig has been forced to relinquish his committee assignments in light of this week's revelations that he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in connection with an attempted sexual encounter with an undercover officer in a Minneapolis airport restroom. "Senator Ted Stevens maintains his position on the Appropriations Committee despite being the subject of a major criminal investigation, including an FBI raid on his Alaska home and Senator David Vitter maintains his assignments despite admitting to the crime of soliciting a prostitute." Sloan noted that in response to CREW's calls for Sen. Stevens to step down from his position on the Senate Appropriations Committee where he has jurisdiction over the Department of Justice's budget, Senate Minority Leader Mitchell McConnell demurred, defending Sen. Stevens. Sloan continued, "A disorderly conduct plea requires a member to give up his committee assignment, but a full-fledged bribery investigation does not. Apparently, in the view of the Republican conference there is almost nothing more serious than a member attempting to engage in gay sex." "For consistency's sake, Senators Stevens and Vitter should both be forced to give up their committee assignments as well." Biodiesel Fueling Sites

Recently I've been thinking about what we might want to do when one of our cars gives up the ghost. It will probably be my husband's car since his is the older of the two. I had been thinking that we would buy one of the new hybrids, but more and more I'm feeling like I don't want to go into major debt for a car. My friend Brina has been talking about how she and her husband want to buy a used diesel Mercedes and make their own biofuel in their garage at home. This started me thinking about the possibility of replacing one of our cars with a diesel, too, so that we could use biodiesel. We may eventually buy one of the newer hybrids, but we have other things we need to use our money for besides a new car so this solution may be a good one. Someone recently sent me a link for the Biodiesel.org website where you can find a map of retail sellers of biodiesel around the country. I was very surprised at the number of filling stations in my own area that are selling it now. Many carry B20, but that's better than regular diesel. Our governor here in Washington State, Christine Gregoire, just signed into law a bill requiring a shift to biodiesel which will take effect in stages over the next couple of years. You can read about it here. I'm thinking that with the increase in biodiesel plants as a result of this bill, it should be a lot easier to find and buy as time goes on. Edit: I just found a car dealer near Seattle that sells green cars (diesels, smart cars, etc. and they do conversions on Volvos and Mercedes) called The Green Car Company. They do out of state sales, too! |
Summers and other economists: out of touch?
Posted on May 10, 2008 in Generic pharmaceuticals
from Michael Dobbs of the Washington Post on Wed., Jan. 19, 2005: During his four years as president of Harvard University, Lawrence Summers has earned a reputation for blunt, sometimes brutal comments. He has provoked a storm of controversy by suggesting that the shortage of elite female scientists may stem in part from "innate" differences between men and women. "I felt I was going to be sick," said Nancy Hopkins, a biology professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who listened to part of Summers' speech Friday [Jan. 14] to a session on the progress of women in academia organized by the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Mass. Some other women scientists also criticized the speech, in which Summers laid out a series of possible explanations for the underrepresentation of women in the upper echelons of professional life, including time spent on child-rearing, upbringing and genetics. No transcript was made of Summers' remarks, which were extemporaneous but delivered from notes. Summers' remarks were first reported by the Boston Globe in Monday's [Jan. 17] editions. The former Treasury secretary won the support of fellow economists and others, who said that they could not understand what the fuss was about and believe Summers presented ideas that were a legitimate topic for debate. "I left with a sense of elation at his ideas," said Claudia Goldin, a Harvard economics professor who also attended the speech. "I was proud that the president of my university retains the inquisitiveness of an academic." **** from Eileen McNamara of the Boston Globe: Summers suggested that women do not rise higher in the academic or professional firmament because they choose to become mothers and thus devote less time to their careers. "I said that raised a whole set of questions about how job expectations were defined and how family responsibilities were defined," Summers told the Harvard Crimson. [He did not return my call.] "But I said it didn't explain the differences [in the representation of females] between the sciences and mathematics and other fields." Why doesn't it? A National Science Foundation study last year reported that women in science and engineering were far less likely than men to earn tenure, especially if they had children. The report found that 15 years out of school, women were almost 14 percent less likely than men to have become full professors. Marriage and children reduced even further a woman's chances of earning tenure, but had no negative impact on men. That sounds like a cultural, not a biological, problem to me. Instead of wringing his hands about speculative differences between men and women, Summers might want to convene a meeting of his science departments to explore the realities of the modern American family and adopt policies that encourage women to balance home and work. Mentor women. Provide child care. Encourage flex-time. Stop the tenure clock during pregnancy or maternity leave. The academy is tailor-made for just such experimentation. Figuring out how to make the workplace work for women is less sexy than speculating about why women just can't cut it. Expecting Summers to shift gears presumes, of course, that the president of Harvard would rather be innovative than provocative. In his remarks last week, Summers pointed to research showing that girls are less likely to score top marks in standardized math and science tests than boys, even though the median scores of both sexes are roughly comparable. He said Tuesday that he did not offer any conclusion for why this should be so but merely suggested a number of possible hypotheses. end Globe ****** Mr. Summers received a B.S. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1982. He was Professor of Economics at Harvard from 1983-1993. ***** A different economist was responsible for allegations that the inventors of the transistor foresaw applications only for hearing aids and that Marconi understood only point-to-point applications for radio. Economists may not be the best sources of information about science, about what scientists think, or who is qualified to be a scientist. Thus, while it may not be surprising that Summers "won the support of fellow economists," that should not be too comforting. ****** Remember "Jimmy the Greek" Snyder and Los Angeles Dodger advisor Al Campanis? Maybe it's time for Summers to go. **** One respondent wrote me of Summers: He sounded like a white guy--coming from a culture where men make very rigid rules and only women who act like men can win. **** In a column "You can't say that at Harvard," (eg, Trenton Times, A13, Jan. 27, 2005), George Will wrote Addressing a conference on the supposedly insufficient numbers of women in tenured positions in university science departments, he suggested that perhaps part of the explanation might be innate--genetically baased-- gender differences in cognition. He thought he was speaking in a place that encouraged uncircumscribed intellectual explorations. (...) He was at Harvard, where he is president. Dis-United 93

Yesterday plus out of curiosity I went to surf United 93. The room was full but that day no kids. The movie was supposed to derive at 7:20 pm but we waited as nearby 30 further minutes. Frankly you can presume how everybody among the room got bored as well intervening my problem I had memorized throughout without reservation the AMC ads, quizzes furthermore Q&As that were projected forth the screen, over a type of guys surrounded by the turnout screamed at the identity behind the projector again enforced that the movie builds immediately! The man needful ignored them still he continued sending the akin boring ADs. Faced with the growing discomfort stab the room he finally launched the movie including the room submerged interpolated a deep curtains. For I always liked to do thereupon I necessity to explore a movie Because the first juncture, I continuance closed myself. That allotment it was somehow strange seeing no commonness sat following to me (left additionally for sure seats) although I can see family appearing, enclosed by vain, over seats... , Anyhow, I right stuff, naively, composition may be they figuered out that I was an arab mortal and who sees... If we scan aside the central mitigation behind the crash of the United 93 precise, from an artistic too fictional venue of program the movie in itself was good.I feed it wholly bone-chilling due to each single of us can generate the horrible existing condition to be forward a hijacked uniform this consummations past a tragic crash. However, the flirt with I am not vitality to discuss the confession of platoon United 93, is whereas, over Because, no living soul glances what veritably happened forward September 11, 2001. The whole tragic events this happened on this century are too shrouded separating secrecy still mystery but I am just curious to ken why the movie director not often chose patrol unit United 93 and fashioned a movie out of it? why not a movie conventionally the two single planes that crashed into the Globe move feelings again this the whole globe saying them dependent TV? (The onliest this crashed into the Pentagon is out subject thanks to it Also remains a mystery, was it a plain? or a missile? or everything else? no shape renders).Anyhow, the movie was so heartbreaking that you can attend mortals between the following burst into cries Also I can take that, nonetheless they clapped their crams with a hint of joy mixed with revenge suddenly exclusive of the \"hijackers\" was killed closed the angry including frightened shipment. Since an arab including moslem myself, I felt somehow humiliated likewise sick among the guts concluded the so shortened carbon of the \"hijackers\". They were portrayed until heartless likewise full of hate amid having a voluminous faith in God, and within the mission they had to adjust.Throughtout the movie the \"hijackers\" were reciting verses of the Kuran along prayers to God to balm them intervening the mission, to bring them peace additionally lasciviousness as well happiness Also award them His Eternal Silence, nothing that I imagine incompatible with their foolish as well resentful behaviour with the travel, they were trim monsters. Next just, that impression of the \"arab-moslem terrorist\" is including engraved at intervals the imagination of the standard deal together with that movie, to my stretch of manifestation, is congenerous putting a knife in a bleeding wound. At a era locale the creation is line now tolerance, peace besides dialogue of religions and civilizations, this movie revives back those akin misconceptions and secondary stereotypes around arabs plus moslems which unexampled adds cram to hasten. Personally, solo line that the director excelled between portraying is the fact that Along September 11, everything worked airily, something was out of accompanying further there was no unity at utterly, something that politicians at intervals Washington backslided to translate but Hollywood seems to contain brought about in bringing it done to the enterprise. cheap cialis generic viagra online generic cialis Cheap Viagra
Injured Iraq War Vets Sue VA
Posted on April 21, 2008 in Medicine news
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Frustrated by delays in health care, a coalition of injured Iraq war veterans is accusing VA Secretary Jim Nicholson of breaking the law by denying them disability pay and mental health treatment. The class-action lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, filed Monday in federal court in San Francisco, seeks broad change in the agency as it struggles to meet growing demands from veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan. Suing on behalf of hundreds of thousands of veterans, it charges that the VA has failed warriors on several fronts -- from providing prompt disability benefits, to adding staff to reduce wait times for medical care to boosting services for post-traumatic stress disorder. The lawsuit also accuses the VA of deliberately cheating some veterans by allegedly working with the Pentagon to misclassify PTSD claims as pre-existing personality disorders to avoid paying out benefits. The VA and Pentagon have generally denied such charges. VA spokesman Matt Smith said Monday he could not comment on a pending lawsuit. But he said the agency is committed to meeting the special needs of Iraq war veterans. I'm glad to see that some veterans are feed up with waiting for this country to fix the problems that have plagued the VA for years. What type of country doesn't take proper care of its' military veterans? I'd say a piss poor one with some seriously confused priorities. viagra cialis cheap viagra buy cilais
Supreme Court heard oral arguments in MedImmune v. Genetech
Posted on April 19, 2008 in Diabetes erectile dysfunction
Oral arguments in MedImmune v. Genentech were heard on October 4. MedImmune had licensed one from Genentech; Genentech obtained rights to a related patent. The issue was whether MedImmune had a right to dispute the validity of the second patent (under antitrust theory). The lower courts had determined that MedImmune did NOT have a right to challenge. Petitioner MedImmune argued against the CAFC's rule that a patent licensee cannot bring a declaratory judgment action questioning the validity of the licensed patent as long as the licensee has not breached the license agreement. The twist here is that IF MedImmune breached the license agreement THEN it might have faced an injunction, shutting down sales of its product Synagis. In the meantime, the Supreme Court did make some statements about injunctions in the eBay case, which might have helped MedImmune a bit. MedImmune also brings up Lear v. Adkins, 395 U.S. 653 (1969), which noted that a licensee often is the most effective challenger to an invalid patent. AP wrote: Chief Justice John Roberts appeared to be concerned that companies could make continuous patent challenges if they were allowed to file lawsuits but not face stiff penalties for breaking license agreements by stopping royalty payments. "How do you ever end these things? Let's say they have this dispute, they bring it to litigation, and they settle it," he said. "Instead of paying a license fee of 50 cents, it's going to be 40 cents, and we'll go on. Then they can sue again, I take it." Patent attorneys said if the case is decided in MedImmune's favor, it could lead to a flood of patent lawsuits because companies could challenge patents without risking legal penalties. But Washington attorney Harold C. Wegner, who watched Wednesday's arguments, said Roberts did not seem convinced by MedImmune's case. "The chief justice was very troubled by the idea," Wegner said. "What would stop the licensees from suing again and again?" generic cialis cheap viagra buy cheap cialis cialis
Embryonic stem cell lines created without destroying embryo: study
Posted on April 16, 2008 in Medicine news
Source: Agence France Presse (AFP) January 10, 2008, 14:58 EST Summary: Agence France Presse (AFP) reports Advanced Cell Technology, Inc., a biotechnology company in the field of stem cell research, successfully created embryonic stem cell lines without destroying embryos: "In a bid to sidestep the ethical debate over the use of human embryos in medical research, scientists have developed a way to derive viable stem cell lines without harming the embryo. They did so by extracting a single cell from the embryo -- as in vitro fertilization clinics do when they test for genetic defects -- and introducing a common molecule called laminin to keep it in a stem cell, or pluripotent, state." Baseball and ethics: Kenny Rogers' thumb
Posted on April 13, 2008 in Diabetes erectile dysfunction
During the second game of the World Series, Fox television commentators early-on pointed to discoloration at the base of Kenny Rogers' left thumb and raised the specter of a foreign substance. The commentators noted that St. Louis, which would be watching the Fox broadcast, would be all over this. Such does not seem to be the case. from the Guardian: Television replay close-ups showed discoloration at the bottom of Rogers' thumb during the opening frame. Rogers cleaned his hand before taking the mound to start the second inning and pitched seven more shutout innings in Detroit's win that tied the best-of-seven championship at 1-1. "What got my attention was guys that came down and said, 'Man, this thing is real obvious on his hand,'" La Russa told reporters at a news conference at Busch Stadium. "I didn't see it. But I did watch video of the other postseason games, so I had an idea of what it looked like, and I said, let's get rid of it and keep playing. LaRussa, who went to law school at Florida State University, talked about the ethics: La Russa spoke about the ethics of the question. "Just because there's a little something that they're using to get a better grip, that doesn't cross the line, you know," La Russa said. "There's a line that I think that defines the competition. "And you can sneak over the line, because we're all fighting for the edge. I always think, does it go to the point of abuse?" said La Russa, who holds a law degree. In contrast to LaRussa's NOT looking at the television, Rogers (according to the Boston Globe) was aware of what was being said on television: But that's Rogers's story and he's sticking to it. He also said he wiped his hand off because he saw on TV that they were talking about it, not because he was instructed to do so by plate umpire Alfonso Marquez. "I think once I wiped the mud off, the last seven innings were very good," Rogers said, "but I'm sure that will be lost in translation with everything." **** While the issue of discoloration on Rogers' hand will come and go quickly, the proposed changes in rules at the USPTO linger like the slow flow of molasses. A hit came up on news.google on Oct. 24 that began: In an effort to streamline the patenting process, the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is proposing two rule changes that, patent and other experts say, may end up adding cost and time for biotech companies and universities looking to obtain patents on their life science discoveries. The hit ENDED with text: While no public hearings are planned, and the USPTO has wide discretion to change the rules, the agency has been holding a series of "town hall" meetings around the country to explain the proposed rules changes. Additionally, those interested in submitting comments to USPTO can do so by mail until May 3, 2006 . In between, one had some quotes: "Most universities will be dismayed," says Carl E. Gulbrandsen, managing director of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, the tech transfer office of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "At universities, even more so than startup biotech companies, the technology that comes off the bench is very early-stage, and often you need several continuations to understand what the invention is and its full breadth," says Gulbrandsen. Doll rejects this logic. "I have absolutely no sympathy for that because when you file an application, that invention is supposed to be complete," he says. "We are being reasonable, [the refiling process has] been a burden on the examiners." But, he continues, if applicants really do need more continuations "and can show a good and sufficient need, we will grant them." However, says Nancy J. Linck, deputy general counsel for intellectual property and trade at the Biotechnology Industry Organization trade association in Washington, DC, the biotech industry relies on continuation practice. "This [proposed] requirement just puts an increased burden on them."
