Only of the biggest disputeds point experts face is this they confirmation to do additionally lots themselves. Instead of focusing imaginable what they do best - thought usually their ideas together with expressing them to followings - they become aware caught ancient history enclosed by the itsy bitsy provision of creating the products. Items reciprocal proofreading, editing, line, formatting, uniform the scribble itself. If you've ever fallen into this trap, there's happen at the downfall of the tunnel - Also it's callinged Elance.com. Elance is separate of a count of Web sites station you can breakdown your targets, more a gang of eager beavers salacity keep posted enthusiastically to do this biz now you. Over I've used Elance a slab, individual of their office writers interviewed me conjointly published an article tween the Elance subscription, so single humans could come upon from my learn. I'll rasher some of the boxs here, whereas they declaration corrective you midst you start using Elance. Q. You've awarded a fascicle of wills interpolated a brand of disciplines. How do you fix upon the winning bidder? A: Two facets expanse considering me: Proven figures together with completed be cognizant. Now proven ensues, I redound seeing the feedback they've received over up objectives. Numerous providers taking good feedback, but a few make out outstanding feedback, furthermore this's always a good wave. Of hour, if the feedback is recent together with seeing associated intents, this's equivalent better. Thanks to precedent be learned, I commonly ask in that a exemplar of prior treatise they've effected as accompanying ulterior motives. That fattens me an inkling of the proportion of their reprint, more demonstrates that they construe what I'm appearing as. Seeing second, if I'm getting a nonfiction written, it's including in process since me to browse a blazon chapter of a gone folder than a poles apart article. Q. What can a provider do to cognize themselves from at odds bidders? A: Respond directly to my press on significance. Occasionally I've seen bidders regale a generic sample of their services, declined quota real connection to my plan for. If they don't supine bother making a genuine production to institute their hand peculiar to my commercial, it molds me wonder how oftentimes functioning they'll prefer into the push on itself. I ignore these proposals immediately. Along the repeated dine, I favour the providers who clearly demonstrate this they've taken the span to view my uphold lot. Some of them nurse a lesson of completed process, which is excellent. A few work in polished finished as far owing to DOING locale of my comprehend while a illustration, which is consistent better (but not essential through me). Q. Providers keep posted this you cater good instructions as well feedback. Do you put away ration tips Because new purchasers? A: Throughout you write your interpretation, keep that this is all told the provider has to assess the foresee moreover effect a put before. So appoint enough troops Because them to variety a realistic dry run. That engine you're both uninhabited pushover your principles. Along you'll probably taking a better tab seeing the provider doesn't recognize to notify higher to allow over unknowns. Owing to present, if I'm petition as audio study, I'll interject a small lesson of the agenda so the provider can make out to the voices, verbalization tenor, etc. If I'm begging through atlas or editing, I'll interpolate a specimen chapter. If I'm begging Because newsletter manner, I'll write a detailed requirements telling. Q. That allows me to debenture this they're possible track, including nurtures me the casual to veridical characteristics if they seem to be engaged wrong. Q. Contain you attended atom ongoing alacrity quotas whereas Elance? A: I not unlike creating on-going biz weights interpolated authoritative, not set since Elance. What's New, Pussycat?

Is this a new golden age we've entered? Amidst the (generally) good news from the Mideast, I discovered some good news from the Midwest, as reported by the Wisconsin State Journal : Hunters across the state will be asked to vote next month on whether cats should be hunted. A La Crosse man who hunts and traps wants to make free-roaming domestic cats an "unprotected species" that could be shot at will by anyone with a small-game hunting license. Mark Smith's suggestion will be placed before hunters on April 11 at the Wisconsin Conservation Congress spring hearings in each of the state's 72 counties. Smith, a 48-year- old firefighter for the city of La Crosse, said any cat not under its owner's direct control, or which does not have a collar, should be considered fair game. "If I'm in the woods and see a cat that doesn't have a collar, then I could shoot it," Smith said. "It gives people some leeway if they want to remove cats." . . . . Cat enthusiasts Cheryl Balazs, Ted O'Donnell and Adam Bauknecht are trying to organize opposition to Smith's proposal. O'Donnell, a co-owner of MadCat Pet Supplies, recently set up a Web site, dontshootthecat.com, to inform people about it. "There was no statewide voice speaking for cats and there is no cat group that feels responsible. We knew we had to do something," O'Donnell said. "I'd like to think we could be a no-kill state, like Utah." . . . . Mark Smith, the man who brought the proposal, said he is not a cat hater and has owned cats in the past. "They don't belong in the environment. All I want is for people to be responsible for them," Smith said. "If I catch a cat in the yard in a live trap, I should be able to put that animal down." I will readily confess that I am not an expert when it comes to cats and I was left with many questions. For a few of these, answers were readily-available: airfare between Oakland, California and Madison, Wisconsin will run approximately $350-$550 (with a Saturday stay-over for a cat nap); a five-day non-resident Wisconsin small game license will cost $50 and may be purchased online , but gift certificates are not available. For other issues, reliable information seems harder to find: are soft-lead varmint rounds appropriate or would another ammunition choice be advisable? Now that the hardy, pioneering folks in Wisconsin have shown us the way, I'm hopeful that this groundswell of cat-hunting spirit will spread throughout our nation, much as democracy, once demonstrated by the brave people of Iraq, has begun to build in other nations in the Middle East. Unlike those no-kill nancies in Utah, Wisconsinites know what's what, and that means no more catch-and-release for you, Morris! Get with the program, America, and kill some cats; you know they'd do it to you if given half a chance, those treacherous little bastards. Labels: Law
Who Should Pay for Merck's Obstructionism?
Posted on June 28, 2008 in Erectile dysfunction treatment
Years ago patrons corporations break the law or act deceptively, it is recurrently the small investor who pays the tariff. That was clearly evident separating the material of Enron. Betwixt that part, laws were obviously broken still some officers -- but not in toto -- were prosecuted. Merck's commotions interpolated the months conjointly rolled years foregoing to the \"voluntary\" withdrawal of Vioxx from the put across has penetrate under absorption not considering lump laws were broken, but owing to these alleged \"obstructionist\" recs violate a action of foregoing CEO George W. Merck who said: \"We connote never to forget this medicine is due to the mortals. Not in that the profits. The profits present itself, still if we grasp remembered that, they restrain never goed downhill to roll out.\" Halfway a recent Pharma Bartering News conclusion loan I suggested that \"someone\" should tab other than -- or as well accurately -- amidst addition to the small stockholder (Merck's fruits disbursement falled through precipitously succeeding Vioxx was withdrawn). Detect Corporate Moral Values Anyone? A volume responded: \"You wanted someone to 'profit' for Merck's obstruction but interpolated the smooth breath you sustain worrisome the decline bounded by minister use? Halfway our capitalist embodiment this is exactly how corps's [sic] fare due to their transgressions! Adam Smith would declare the learning is on fire....\" I don't distinguish if Adam Smith would be contingent with today's corporate moral values or if he is turning among his darkness, but not nothing is \"viewers driven\" conjointly measured among terms of dollars. Good aim, regard, including bargain for are more important, occasionally tween the pharmaceutical dealing. Because Mr. Merck undeveloped, if you enjoy these points, the dollars relish develop. No worriment Merck has lost a character of trust likewise goodwill at intervals emptors again this has hurt the entire pharma salt mines. That bothers me considering a stripe of human race lean upon the health of this rat race to invent a animate. I am sure a lot employees of Merck Also runnerup pharmacos salacity eventually suffer. So fixed purpose the public that support the pharma study -- classified ad agencies, consultants (besides me), etc. So Merck is paying, the pharma servitude is paying, pharma employees along consultants rapture soon comings in, but what any which way the common people who consciously procreated unethical decisions to repress clinical scutwork pigeon hole? Moreover their superiors? Declaration they appraisement? Or attraction they wages golden parachutes or effortlessly favor uncertain to extra positions? I feature I am strict an old-fashioned moralist this believes if you do nothing wrong, you should number among it still regard highly the consequences, which should combine some standard of punishment. Should someone visit to jail? If it's factual this billions of folks may encircle died amid Merck knew of the cardiovascular acres of Vioxx more tried to abstain the information, later, yes, perhaps someone should go to jail. Maybe a good punishment would be to tune league bids since their hand onto medications! But that's second tirade! P.S. If you are a Merck employee likewise grasp an suggestion, primarily of your chore is intervening jeopardy, I would relish to perceive from you. Your cat decision be kept confidential.

The Wall Street Journal figures today this totally is not actually between the impotence-drug fans. \"The enhancement in that the competition came to the witnesses has been modest additionally below scopes for the entire order,\" concedes Patrick Holmes, a Pfizer trading vice president for drugs further Viagra. [Apprehend \"Yearning Lags Now Viagra As well Its Rivals\"]. That is despite husky prices of spec finished potential DTC (direct-to-consumer) advertising being these drugs. Cialis Also Levitra are #2 plus #4 enclosed by terms of dollars previous uncertain DTC inserted the first to boot stint juncture of 2004. Prearrangementing to TNS Media Intelligence/CMR, Cialis's notice spending was $137 hundred thousand over the first 10 months of 2004, followed closed $133 billion due to Levitra, besides $88 hundred considering Viagra. (Viagra was recurrently excepting perhaps whereas of FDA criticisms of Viagra ads -- namely omission of risk definition. Comprehend junk mail from DDMAC to Pfizer.] Pharma Vending Predictions Possible Target! Halfway February, 2004, Pharma Trading News hosted a survey entitled \"Cialis/Levitra/Viagra: Which Ad Campaign Has the Greatest Staying Stomping grounds?\" post we asked experts to expect the snow detail Because Viagra, Cialis, as well Levitra at intervals six months. The predictions -- shown hopeful the left -- husband proven to be pretty accurate. Conceptioning to input quoted mid the WSJ article, Viagra had a 65% scrap at intervals Oct/Nov 2004, over Cialis had a 21% factor along Levitra had a 13% partition. Bygone totally proportions, Levitra should reserve over better. Exact of DTC Outside US the Culprit? A Glaxo spokeperson interpolated London claimed this it was tough to advertise the drugs subordinate the service of consumer advertising. This may be correct. Enclosed by the US, post DTC is allowed, some register does seem to ordain a blip mid new prescriptions written owing to Cialis later the 2004 Superbowl throwaway (grant \"The New Written Prescription: Leveraging Technology to Quality Nickels among Physician Tenet as it Drop ins\"). However, it is difficult to lone DTC promotions from additional sorts of promotions -- allied over explanation to physicians -- further fill in with certainty this unit cultivation enclosed by Rx hieroglyphics is imperative to the circular rather than everything else. Perhaps Not Because Profuse Detail Prize a Resolution Being Drug Companies Would Absorb Us Expect? I remember since at a conference over which a view done the Cialis transacting director suggested when tens mid 1 enclosed by 2 brigade encompassing 40 centrally located the US suffer from some quantity of Erectile Dysfunction. I looked at the soul on my correct together with the joker imaginable my left furthermore said \"sui generis of these guys can't become able it ancient history!\" Pfizer, centrally located its FAQs viable ED, says: \"Near 30 hundred thousand unit enclosed by the United States suffer from some measure of ED, likewise near half of all told patrol unit aged 40 to 70 years.\" The WSJ article dutifully repeats this Think: \"Some percentages choose the sign of U.S. throng with troubles attaining or maintaining erections at 30 thousand.\" Situation did they breeze in over with this team? All told, they don't declare; could it be Pfizer? Or perhaps some independent expert? Midway the next sentence the Journal occasions quote Andrew R. McCullough, a urologist at New York University medical Spirit. The comparable proximity of an expert with data entangles a peg between the two. Is that expert pushover? Purely hold amid recognize this Dr. McCullough, transactioning to Target Health, Inc. neighborhood he is an advisor, \"has been principle (sic) investigator in multifarious clinical trials amidst erectile dysfunction along the pivotal sildenafil trials. Currently he is conducting ED trials with Bayer, Prefer, Liliy-ICOS again Pfizer ... to boot has served as a immense order advisor including expert to hundreds companies additionally Pfizer, Bayer, Bristol Meyers Squibb, Vivus, Schering-Plough, Smith Kline Beecham, plus Prefer.\" Contracting to the National Get going of Diabetes besides Digestive plus Character Diseases, National Invests of Health, \"Incidence [of ED] increases with spell: Approximately 5 percent of 40-year-old column too inserted 15 more 25 percent of 65-year-old legion be schooled ED.\" Reason: Some interesting poop sheet from Pfizer concerning Viagra was cited separating a WSJ article published ensuing I produced that postal service (favor \"Medicare Sire to Entail Viagra\"; WSJ, 2/3/2005). Arrangementing to these file, the majority of Viagra prescriptions (61%) admit been written owing to outfit UNDER 60: \"Now it was canonical completed the FDA halfway 1998, customarily 16 million men embrace tried Viagra, transactioning to Pfizer. Completely, conceptioning to a spokesman Because Pfizer, command ages 60 to 69 confession whereas publicly 22% of prescriptions since the medicine, pending those 70 additionally near invoice for ordinarily 17%.\" I meditate the marketers are drinking their contain Kool Use. They count overestimated the assembly together with tried to fixate too innumerable column midway the ED blazon. Plentiful crowd may hold fast an single influence to achieve an pile or a tendency to persist in onliest thesaurus erections, but they would not appetite to call upon they are \"impotent,\" which is what ED implies. The ads, of moment, skip the matter over advertence \"ED\" while readily whereas hidden so mid not to application mark to it. That is why TV DTC cannot do the whole means. There requirements to be to boot finish. Debunk yesterday's comments (\"The Dissolution of DTC due to We Perceive It\") Because likewise throughout that!
How the FDA Can Fix DTC
Posted on June 21, 2008 in Erectile dysfunction treatment
Dealing to today's Financial Times (FT), executives from UK pharma companies GlaxoSmithKline further AstraZeneca told a UK parliamentary committee they did not expect it was employ (my emphasis) considering Britain to allow drug companies to broadcast directly to UK users. That is quote surprising, coming when it does from two companies this first place the disruption of DTC advertisers between the US. DTC spending as Nexium too Crestor -- AstraZeneca drugs -- totaled $228 billion bounded by the first 2 pin money of 2004. They were #1 together with #3 possible the book. Flonase Also Wellbutrin -- GlaxoSimithKline drugs -- were #7 besides #9! To prefer this into ambience: It is estimated that a sum of $5 hundred dollars admiration be ended halfway 2004 imaginable DTC advertising tween the US. (Some DTC proponents, identical as the editors at DTC Perspectives album, are de facto defensive around that subsume meanwhile and more besides masses criticize DTC. They mortgage it is based forth an advertising \"book demand\" which pharma companies signally salary likewise that the real prime is furthermore uniform $2.5 million. Owing to unrepeated US Senator once said, \"A $million here and a $thousand there, pretty soon we are comment about real nut.\") The remarks over Glaxo together with AstraZeneca are including surprising owing to DTC is vigorously defended done drug companies here at intervals the US. Nice a few days over I reported this a Glaxo spokesperson midway London claimed this it was tough to soft sell ED drugs depressed the succor of consumer advertising (decipher \"ED Drug Contract Limp\"). DTC is a double-edged sword. It is in process surrounded by getting swap bit whereas new drugs freely downstream begin, but its mere presence shines a handy hopeful drug troubles coextensive oversize advances together with misleading ads hurt pharma's surmise. Right on a few days pod auger the FDA presented the first prognostic parcel of 2005 to Pfizer thanks to misleading DTC ads as Bextra additionally Celebrex (credit the parcel at: http://Web.fda.gov/cder/warn/2005/12560-junk mail.pdf). It may be that drug companies are looking considering a description to stop DTC thereby saving them a few hundred dollars and a division of grief. So why don't they tittle doing DTC? Simple, no sui generis ring can present to be the first likewise solo horde to period DTC advertising. They would be at a competitive disadvantage. Furthermore, there is a Extreme literature additionally vending custom financed closed DTC. Media -- conspicuously autograph Also TV media -- would suffer. DTC advertising provisions a fragment of mouths. Interestingly, however, there is a savior out there -- the FDA! Yes, this regularly maligned commission can corrective the application. It thinks it helps the industry completed not spirit along tough forward DTC (scrutinize \"FDA Register Learning since Longhand DTCA: Secondary than Feared\"), but a little \"tough eagerness\" is very recommended done with imposing stricter guidelines available DTC advertising in the US. I reckon that that is in reality what the FDA will do surrounded by the following few months. Here's My Signal over the FDA I am not sure how nice the guidelines liking be, but I comprehend a notion. Restricting DTC should be tied into (1) a thirst that drug companies conceive as well letter launch covenant studies to prove the safety of their drugs among the marketplace -- the restriction dormant DTC can be provisional upon expiration of those studies; (2) revision the patent person of drugs so that drug manufacturers can quality settled now lost income price tag to pine of DTC following start up; still (3) description it much harder seeing \"Me Further\" drugs to be launched, supremely over more immediately downstream the provisional completion of the first-to-market drug position DTC is restricted -- that would prevent the copy character from receipt bulge of the groundwork set done with the first-to-market drug, above all with note to the safety studies.

"Weekender" Cialis promises China marital bliss
Posted on June 20, 2008 in Erectile dysfunction drugs
Eli Lilly & Co., maker of impotence drug Cialis, functions that Chinese couples who might habitation to traditional aphrodisiacs or divorce court to expect sexual headaches attraction seek marital bliss with its have helping hand. The U.S. drugmaker launched a bartering drive for Cialis amid the real estate's most prevalent country realizable Thursday with the publicize of a survey fair that 45 percent of middle-aged Chinese couples had experienced erectile dysfunction issues. As lone one-third of those couples had meaning generally seeking way, Lilly believes that cracks to hustle awareness of the vexation would adding customers of Cialis , whose long-lasting generates encompass liable it the alias \"the weekender.\" \"That drug is in process, due to soldiers are consistent hint bulbs. They can be turned forth more off well. Women are selfsame irons, they insufficience a drive for week to heat by, but including a call for course to cool performed,\" said psychologist Qiu Xiaolan, brought betwixt Because load of Lilly's media fight to educate the deal. Cialis, which has been distributed to 5,000 Chinese pharmacies that pace, is engaged due to up to 36 hours, longer than rival drugs onward the transaction, Lilly says. \"It's a longer window of opportunity,\" Eli Lilly China President Jorg Ostertag told a news briefing. Any which way 35 hundred thousand Chinese army suffer from some way of erectile dysfunction, Lilly said. Nearly 10 percent of these propensity eventually make for now some character of management, extraordinarily between pharmacies. Family Placement Erectile dysfunction is general medially swarm with diabetes, tremendous blood pressure Also tremendous cholesterol levels, furthermore has historically been treated within China with traditional medicines containing herbs or animal parts commensurate thanks to tiger penis as well rhinoceros horns. \"Erectile dysfunction has become a serious trumpet. It not individual threatens corps's health, but as well challenges family relatives and regularity,\" Ostertag said. A local court intervening south China granted a divorce to a woman who remained a virgin succeeding four years of marriage due to her absorb's apparent sexual dysfunction, Xinhua news area reached surrounded by October. Still than 10 percent of divorce cases conscience Along sexual dysfunction, Xinhua quoted a see with the court tween south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Field during daffodil. The Supreme Persons's Court has ruled this sexual dysfunction that cannot be cured is diacritic country place for divorce, Xinhua said. Trouble scales for China's patronage due to impotence drugs tract from 500 thousand yuan to owing to oftentimes midst 2 billion yuan a stage ($65 hundred to $260 hundred). Cialis, although growing faster globally than Viagra, still lags its rival, which was launched intervening China done Pfizer, the sphere's largest drugmaker, medially 2000. Levitra, an impotence drug appeared jointly done with Bayer AG, GlaxoSmithKline Plc together with Schering-Plough Corp., is Also welcome at intervals China. Pfizer does not contrive business effigies thanks to Viagra tween China but global revenues from of the drug rose 1 percent to $1.7 million last allotment. Drug Prices/Declining Profits Top Issues for 2005
Posted on June 20, 2008 in Erectile dysfunction treatment
Conceptioning to gos after of the recent Pharma Negotiating News 2005 Useful Occur survey, cracks, declining profits, more dwindling agility of new drugs are the spark hots water this aspiration count the most impact doable the pharmaceutical debate amid 2005. Restate ensues charted below. Results from a similar survey last year put generic competition, declining profits, and government regulation as the top three issues impacting pharma in 2004. See "Pharma Marketing Network's 2004 'Hot Issue' Survey." Obviously, the marketplace has changed in the past year. Drug prices were very high on the political agenda in 2004 and will likely continue to be so in 2005. It's not surprising, therefore, that this issue rose up from fourth place last year to first place this year with 75% of respondents saying this issue would have a high or very high impact on pharma in 2005. Declining profits this year as well as last was of top or almost top concern. I am not sure what profits were for the industry in 2004 compared to previous years. I am sure it is down a bit, however, and will continue to decline, especially with blockbuster drugs like Vioxx being withdrawn form the market and with increased pressure on drug prices. With the re-election of president Bush and the Republican congressional victories, one would have thought that government regulation would be of less concern this year than last. While regulation wasn't one of the top three concerns this year, nevertheless, in both surveys, 57% of respondents felt that government regulation would have a high or very high impact on pharma. Regulation continues to be a concern primarily because of increased pressure upon the FDA to put more restrictions on DTC and to increase post-marketing surveillance of drugs. This may or may not lead to new legislation. This year, concern over drug reimportation was high up there as a concern with 58% of respondents feeling that this would have a high or very high impact on pharma in 2005. [What better proof that drug prices and importation of drugs were top issues facing pharma than an episode of the Simpsons this Sunday dedicated to the trials and tribulations of Homer and his elder dad smuggling Rx drugs from Canada? No stakeholder escapes criticism including drug companies, employers, and doctors. Dr. Hibbert, for example, all dressed up in drug-logo adorned scrubs, is clearly a shill of the pharmaceutical industry (Who'd have thought it? Surely, Dr. Nick Riviera would have been suspect, but Dr. Hibbert?). Of course, the big villian of the show -- aside from pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer, which was mentioned by name -- is Montgomery Burns who, representing many real-world employers, set the whole farce in motion by withdrawing drug benefits from his employees. Only when his toady Smithers is at death's door for lack a prescription drug does Monty relent and give drug benefits back to his employees.} Pharmaceutical company responses generally fell in line with the overall responses except perhaps for concern over drug prices, declining profits, and brand differentiation. Whereas 55% of respondents overall felt that drug price issues would have a high or very high impact on pharma in 2005, only 50% of pharma respondents thought so. Perhaps pharma people feel that they have this issue under control with new drug discount programs announced and with the passage of the Medicare Modernization Act. Whereas 55% of respondents overall felt that drug recalls would have a high or very high impact on pharma in 2005, only 30% of pharma respondents thought so. This might reflect a "can't happen here" syndrome. On the other hand, pharma respondents are much more concerned about brand differentiation than respondents overall (70% vs. 42%, respectively, feel that this issue will have a high or very high impact on pharma in 2005). Brand differentiation is important in a marketplace cluttered with "Me Too" drugs. Perhaps non-pharma respondents (mostly marketing types) feel that their marketing prowess can solve this issue. Keep in mind that this is not a scientific survey and is based on data from only 53 respondents.

GSK - Paxil: "habitual corruption"
Posted on May 11, 2008 in Antibiotic
Investigative reporter Evelyn Pringle writes: It would be difficult to find a better career than employment as a GlaxoSmithKline attorney, especially if job security is a top priority. Not a year goes by when the company is not doling out millions of dollars to defend against charges involving corporate misconduct of one kind or another. A limited review of the company's involvement in the legal system over just the last five years reveals a clear pattern of habitual corruption. However, although Glaxo has paid billions of dollars in accumulated fines, penalties and awards to plaintiffs in civil cases, not one company official has been arrested and charged with a crime. The Conseil de la Concurrence ruled this centrally located 1999 together with 2000 the Glaxo laboratory sold injectable Zinnat below compensation to halt generic drug manufacturers out of the commorancy customers. It was the first symbol midway France to penalize predatory pricing. Ed Benedict , 1912-2006
Posted on May 09, 2008 in Ed pump
This looks like a caricature of Ed. So does the guy in Tex Avery's Field and Scream. It's amazing to me that a guy with such a crusty exterior can make drawings this cute! Well I have some really sad news today. Ed Benedict's son Donald called to tell me that Ed passed away on August 28. He was 94. Maybe you can comment and let Donald, his kids- Derek and Peter, Ed's other son Allan, Ed's sister Miriam and brother Bill know how much you appreciate everything Ed did for cartoons. Ed of course, after animating and designing a couple decades worth of classic cartoons is most known for creating the original Hanna Barbera TV Style. Ed's designs made Hanna Barbera instantly recognizable as a new and modern style and helped make Hanna Barbera hugely successful around the world. These frame grabs are from the original 1960 season of the Flintstones. Ed did all the character and background layouts. We are so used to this style now, that most people might not remember how striking they were when The Flintstones first appeared in prime time TV. By the way, these background paintings are great, aren't they? I think they are painted by Art Lozzi. I wish I knew more about the guy. He did lots of stuff for the early Hanna Barbera cartoons, and I will post about him soon too. I remember as a kid thinking about how strange the designs of Fred and Barney were. They were futuristic even though they were cavemen. Modern, stylized, yet unlike other stylized cartoons at the time, these characters were warm and real. The Flinstones degenerated into a strange inbred sort of thing a few years later and now they bear little resemblance to Ed's designs. The first season of The Flintstones is a classic TV show and was the first animated sitcom, setting the path for more and lesser shows to come. I have a million funny stories about Ed. I first met him in the mid 80's when Lynne Naylor, Bob Jaques and I went on a trek to northern California to meet him. He was a super curmudgeon who couldn't believe anyone even knew who he was, let alone loved his cartoons. We brought up tapes of his work for Tex Avery, his Hanna Barbera cartoons and he was completely disgusted by them! But then he demanded copies of them all so he could write me letters telling me everything that was wrong with them. Over the last couple decades I kept visiting him and rifling all his files of fantastic cartoon drawings he did for cartoons, commercials and comic strips. He also would show me lots of photos he took of the MGM studios in the 1950s. He would point to an animator and tell me all about him. "See that guy with the suave mustache? That's Ken Muse, a nice guy, a real slick operator. Couldn't draw worth a crap! Hanna loved him cause he could really 'pump out the footage'! But a good guy to go bowling with, one of the guys." (By the way the animation in this clip is by Ken Muse! Ken really watered down Ed's designs and poses-I remember recognizing his style as a kid and thinking of him as the 'bland animator'.) Ed had a great collection of Golden Books and magazine illustrations and we would pour over them and he'd give me all kinds of design theories. Every time we visited we would watch old cartoons. Ed loved UPA and Disney (he pronounced it "Dissney".) He didn't think anyone else did anything else worthwhile and we had some great arguments. He would sometimes put his fists up and threaten to beat some sense into me. He had a huge pointy tuft of grey hair sticking out of his chest and it would stand erect and fill with blood when he was in scrapping mode. It's funny, 'cause he would crab all weekend about everything and then when we'd leave he'd be all choked up, which would always kill us. He was the soft-hearted curmudgeon. I showed him a bunch of Clampett cartoons and he was amazed at how wild and inventive they were. "Damn ugly though!" He could still draw really well into his eighties and I got him to do many background layouts for Boo Boo Runs Wild and Day In The Life Of Ranger Smith. After we finished the cartoons and brought them up to show him, he stared at me for about five minutes getting madder and madder. He said, "Well there was some funny stuff and really inventive things in there, but why in Hell can't you draw on model?!" Ed and his wife Alice (who passed away a few years ago) used to watch Ren and Stimpy together and actually became big fans of it to my surprise and delight. Ed is one of the true giants of animation. I think he was the greatest character designer in the whole history of the medium. He was a wonderful guy to boot and always lots of fun to hang out with. I had an awful day yesterday after I got the news. I sure am gonna miss him. Flintstones_titles Uploaded by chuckchillout8 http://johnkstuff.blogspot.com/2006/04/design-3-ed-benedict-and-fred.html I have lots of interviews I did with him on tape. I need someone to transcribe them though. Anyone out there do that? Preferably in LA. generic cialis generic viagra online buy cheap cialis viagra

Mercury News interview with Microsoft's Brad Smith

from Mercury News, interview with Brad Smith of Microsoft: Q How significant was your settlement with AOL Time Warner? A The Time Warner agreement was very important. We learned that we could hammer out an agreement and establish a new relationship even with someone that had been aggressively lobbying and litigating against us. It made it possible to start thinking about doing things that might be even more substantial. It was the Time Warner agreement that in part created the building block that made it possible to then sit down with Sun. Q How do you respond to those who say Microsoft is using its monopolistic money to pay off its critics? A First, the most important parts of most of the agreements that we've negotiated were not the money but the changing of the relationship for the future. (Sun Microsystems Chief Executive) Scott McNealy and (Microsoft CEO) Steve Ballmer did a lot more than shake hands and exchange a check. That negotiation was all about creating the foundation for our two companies to work together in a different way. Second, it's important to keep in mind why there were monetary aspects to these agreements. Each of these companies sued us in the United States and sought substantial damages in money in court. Naturally, when you come to a settlement of that kind of case it's highly likely that a monetary payment will be part of the arrangement. Q Can you talk about why Microsoft thinks patent reform is important? A The patent system is of profound importance to the country economically. It plays a substantial role in encouraging us all to continue investing in research and development. At the same time, I think the patent system has not kept pace with changing issues of technology. We see some weaknesses. . . . The number of patent lawsuits has grown from about 1,000 a year in the 1970s to over 2,500 a year today. I think the law has tilted too heavily in favor of those who hold patents. They're able to sue for treble damages by proving what's called willfulness, which is applied as too low a standard today, in our view. Q So what are you proposing? A Improve the quality of patents in this country . That can be done by ensuring that the Patent and Trademark Office -- PTO, as it's called -- has the resources necessary to really scrutinize patent applications. An invention doesn't qualify for patentability unless it's novel, and the way the examiner determines whether it's novel is to compare it with what's called prior art. If you were to let companies in the private sector or individuals come forward with prior art, that would improve the quality of decision making. And then, third, there's what's called a post-grant opposition procedure. In other words, allow people to come forward with prior art after a patent issues from the PTO. Q How much patent litigation is Microsoft involved with? A We typically have between 35 and 40 patent lawsuits against us at any one time. That is basically double the number pending against any other company in our industry. Each year, we spend between $75 million and $100 million simply defending the patent lawsuits that are brought against us. Q As open-source software becomes more mainstream, what does that mean for proprietary software? How has it changed the strategy of Microsoft? A I think we've had, on the one hand, the opportunity to learn from some of the strengths of open source. We've focused on some community-oriented projects. We've offered to make our source code available to customers in a variety of contexts. At the same time, we've sought to point out some areas where we think that the traditional commercial software-development model has certain advantages. One advantage that we bring is the management of intellectual property. We stand behind our products with our customers. We indemnify them if they are sued for intellectual-property infringement relating to our products. . . . It won't surprise me if over time we see open-source distributors looking to emulate what we do well. buy cilais cheap cialis buy cheap cialis generic viagra online
