Different Types of Health Insurance in California

Different Types of Health Insurance in California By: WittyArticles Different Types of Health Insurance in California Whether you buy group or individual health in California, the options you have regarding the different types of health insurance are generally the same. In some groups you can even choose from available plans. These different types are traditional health insurance, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), and preferred provider organizations (PPOs). California goes beyond the Federal requirements for offering health insurance to its residents. Examples of this include Industry Advantage plans (IAHP), short-term health policies, Insurance for high risk Individuals and special plans for children and teens. Additional Health Insurance in California The traditional health care delivery system is based on a fee-for-service type of arrangement. In a fee-for-service system, you pay or each itemized medical service you receive. In the days of the frontier, "Doc" often received a chicken as payment. Today, physicians are paid with money, lots and lots of it. Fee-for-service health insurance recognizes this practice and is designed to reduce or even eliminate your duty to pay directly for your medical care. Traditional health insurance comes in three parts: California has four basic options for choosing a health care plan: 1. Health through an employer or association 2. Health Insurance through Income eligibility such as Medicaid 3. Health care for high risk individuals such as those that have had cancer or a heart attack 4. Private Insurance Hospitalization Hospitalization covers defined expenses incurred while in the hospital. Generally, the insurance will pay for all of the covered services rendered by the hospital staff. However, if the insurance benefit is an indemnity payment, the payment will be for a fixed sum regardless of the actual expenses incurred. This fixed sum will usually be far below the daily charge actually made by the hospital. Medical/surgical This part of a traditional health plan covers the expensive costs of medical care other than the bill from the hospital. Services such as doctor visits, treatment charges, etc., are covered here. Medical/surgical usually has a deductible and requires co-payments by the insured (payments you make for charges not covered by the insurance), typically 20 percent of the doctor's fee. Catastrophic or major medical There are usually lifetime maximum payments that hospitalization and medical/surgical plans will pay, after which the well runs dry. Unfortunately, these maximums may not be sufficient to pay for all of the care required if a major illness or injury should strike, since such afflictions can eat up hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars worth of health services. Thus, catastrophic coverage adds to your umbrella of protection in an amount sufficient to protect you from the horrendous expenses of such serious and prolonged illnesses. These policies also fill in some of the gaps not covered by hospitalization or medical/surgical. Health Maintenance Organizations or Private Insurance in California The health maintenance organization (HMO) is a relatively new player in the health insurance game, although it has been around in a limited fashion since the 1930s. The idea behind an HMO is to pay one premium and receive all of your health care at no or a nominal additional cost. The point is to save money compared to traditional health plans that cost more to purchase and require more out-of-pocket payments from the insured. What you, the insured, give in exchange for reduced cost is a substantial loss of your freedom to choose who will take care of your health needs. Preferred Provider Organizations Preferred provider organizations (PPOs) seek to give both the benefits of traditional health plans and the money savings of HMOs. They do this by paying higher benefits as a reward for your using the doctors or hospitals they preselect for that purpose. Disability Insurance Disability insurance does not pay for health care; rather it pays for lost wages caused by a disabling injury or illness. How Health Insurance Is Priced Ask anyone how health insurance is priced and you will get a simple answer: expensively! Beyond that, there are underwriting criteria used by health insurance providers, whether they are for-profit or, like Blue Shield/Blue Cross, nonprofit. Underwriting Criteria Age. The older you are, the more likely you are to get sick; therefore, the higher your health insurance premiums will be. Number of people covered. Many people buy family coverage rather than individual policies. This means that there will be adults as well as minor children protected by the same plan. Some companies will charge based on the size of the family. Others charge a basic family rate without regard to the number of members. Gender. Unlike life insurance, where women get the better end of the bargain than men, in health insurance women often pay higher premiums. This is based on health insurance industry statistics which indicate that the female of the species tends to need medical care more often than the male. Health history. Insurance operates on statistical probabilities. If you have had a poor health history, statistically you are more likely to have a more expensive health care future. This, in turn, means that you will pay higher premiums-if you can get health insurance at all. Occupation. The more likely you are to suffer injury or illness because of the work you do, the more likely the health insurance industry will be to charge excessively for benefits. This may be well and good for professional deep-sea divers. But the industry has begun to stretch the concept into areas that have nothing to do with the inherent danger of the work. Lifestyle. In your application for health insurance you will be asked questions about your personal habits. Your answers will have a lot to do with the cost of your premiums. If you smoke, you will probably pay more for health insurance. If you drink to excess, you will probably pay more for health insurance. If you are known to be under a great deal of stress, you may pay more for health insurance. California does reward the health care Insurance consumer with lower premiums if they have practiced good health policies. One of the most important things you can do as a health care consumer is to engage in preventive care. Not only will you be able to spot serious diseases at an early stage, thereby increasing your chances of effective treatment and cure, but you should be able to save money as well, since it is usually far less expensive to treat a disease when it's a molehill rather than a mountain. Reputable Canadian medicines pass test

Posted on October 11, 2008 in Canadian drugs

Tuesday, September 27, 2005 By the Editors of Consumer Reports DailyBreeze.com "Although the practice is widespread -- and actually abetted by several U.S. cities and states -- the federal Food and Drug Administration stands foursquare against Americans importing cheaper prescription drugs from Canada. "And not because it's illegal. Individuals who order prescriptions from Canadian Web sites may be violating the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, although the FDA says it has no plans to prosecute them. "Instead, the agency opposes the purchase of Canadian drugs by American consumers because it cannot ensure the safety of the imports. "...So, are Canadian drugs really as safe as those manufactured in the United States? "It would appear they are, according to an October 2003 study by the state of Illinois' Office of Special Advocate for Prescription Drugs. (Illinois joins Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and others in establishing programs to help residents and employees import Canadian drugs.) "Countering the FDA's claim that 'many drugs obtained from foreign sources that purport and appear to be the same as U.S.-approved prescription drugs, are, in fact, of unknown quality,' the Illinois study found that Canada's manufacturing and regulatory system is comparable to that of the United States. "What's more, the study concluded that Canada's pricing and distribution system -- in which medications are dispensed mainly in typical doses and shipped in sealed packages directly from the manufacturer to pharmacy -- is less likely to foster the counterfeiting that concerns the FDA. "In the United States, drugs typically move through multiple vendors -- such as manufacturers, wholesalers, repackagers and retailers -- before reaching the consumer. "Indeed, in a June 2004 report, the U.S. Government Accountability Office said that all of the prescription drugs it ordered from Canadian Internet pharmacies contained the proper chemical compositions, were shipped in accordance with special handling requirements, and arrived undamaged. "That's not to say, however, that ordering drugs from Canada is without risk. Many Web sites selling medications have been created to lure U.S. consumers seeking cheaper prices. "Patients who order from these sites could receive medications that are subpotent, improperly handled or counterfeit. "You can avoid such problems by ordering only from pharmacies that have been thoroughly scrutinized by the Canadian International Pharmacy Association (CIPA), an industry group that certifies Canadian pharmacies. For a list of CIPA-certified online pharmacies, visit www.ciparx.ca. "Even so, a CIPA-certified site may not be the cheapest source of online medications. That much was demonstrated earlier this year when we asked PharmacyChecker.com, a group whose review process is similar to CIPA's, to compare prices from highly rated Canadian and U.S. Web sites." OH WOE IS ME, THE GOP!

Posted on September 29, 2008 in Ed pump

What are the Republicans going to do after what they put the voters through? An administration led by a fraudulent president, a man in denial, who commits crimes big time but says with a sneer, Get out of here, like another Commander in Grief (Tricky Dick Nixon} who thought he could do no wrong as long as he was the chief. All presidents love the law but believe they are above the law, they can-do and do do whatever they want to do to undue legislation old or new, that interferes with the (sneer! sneer! sneer!) administration's ministration of this less than solvent once great nation. You'll recall Dubya's claim of self-imposed immunity when he proclaimed he doesn't have to explain what he means to say because he said it. Give Dubya credit. This incredible forgettable head of state can't even remember who to hate or what he ate or when he ate it. Members of the Bush regime have been involved in every scheme political, hypocritical or typical sexual infidelity. She did this and they did that and that was that but keep it under your hat for, no doubt, if it gets out he'll be out and his enemy who's opposed to sin will get in. That's the how and why some lose, some win. That's how that son of a son got in, not for a cover-up like Holy Foley, but for sins that he lied to start a war where thousands of GIs and innocent Iraqis died and who knows how many maimed and will remain disabled for life just to get this defective reelected/selected. Now the issue, should Bush be impeached? It has finally reached a fever pitch and that bun of a switch may soon be in sheep dit. And the GOP has had it with GWB and his war and all the things that are sure to emerge as Democrats get the urge to purge his less than legal legacy. Cheap Generic Viagra

All NBA Team

Posted on September 07, 2008 in Erectile dysfunction treatment

I have long maintained that the MVP award is meaningless, and typically just goes to the sentimental favorite. Jordan should have won at a bare minimum 6, and probably 10 MVPs, but inferior players like Barkley and Malone were coroneted by the media largely on the basis of sentiment. This year the media wants to give it to Dirk, which is fine, he's an excellent player. But still a meaningless award. I prefer the All NBA team. Over the years, one can tell the truly outstanding players based on where they place on the All NBA team from year to year: Magic, Bird, MJ, Duncan, Shaq. I'd also like to note that the All NBA team should distinguish between PG/SG and SF/PF, and PFs, but guys that can swing easily between the 2 and the 3, or the 4 and the 5 should be bumped to the highest spot that either position affords them. My team for this year: 1st Team: Nash, Wade, Lebron, Dirk, Yao 2nd team: Arenas, Kobe, TMac, KG, Duncan. 3rd team: Parker, Carter, Howard, Boozer, Amare. Also, this year's playoffs should be fabulous. I like the Spurs, but it's quite a tough road through Phoenix and Dallas. In the East, I like the winner of the Bulls/Heat series. As for the Wizards, 4 and out. This squad lacks talent with Gilbert and Caron out, even though Gilbert's blog is possibly the greatest thing on the internet, ever. My favorite quotes: "I got to boo LeBron and them." "That’s why I’m going on the road trip, I’m going to sit right behind their bench and just talk all day. I’m going to just talk about the whole team from start to finish and try to do my part by irritating them." "Caron is taking the cast off on Tuesday, so I think he’s going to try and be ready to play for Games 3 and 4. It’s going to be a big lift because those guys will be happy to see him back and he’ll bring his energy. And then if they go to Game 5 I’m coming in, I’m going to play. All they are going to do is just sit me in the corner for offense and I’m going to shoot threes, just in case it comes down to a game winner. I still got the Hibachi going. I mean, I can’t walk or run, but I’m going to try. Hell, I could play Games 1-4, just stick me in the corner." "Of course we’ll win the election. As long as he has me, we’re winning. We’ll be co-presidents. He can handle all the big stuff like the war in Iraq and all that, and I’ll keep everybody distracted off what he’s doing. I’ll be the entertainer.I’ll do the press conferences. I’ll play the Bush part. I’ll be the golfer, I’ll go golf for 14 hours. I’ll party for half a week. I’ll do that, I’ll have fun with that. And then Barack can handle all that important stuff. " Seriously, I can't think of a more likable superstar in sports history. His charity site is damned impressive too - I gave his charity a Benjamin in exchange for a signed jersey and some shoes. I love the NBA. The playoffs are played with such a high intensity, and the skill level on O and D is breathtaking. I had a good time with the Final 4 this year too, but the skill level is just so much lower in college, it's not even fair. Let's talk some more Wizards. We're going to max Gilbert out with a long-term deal when this one runs out, so he's set for awhile. Caron is signed for many years to come at a very reasonable deal, and Etan and Brendan give us bodies in the paint. Hopefully no one will sign Blatche to an outrageous deal this summer so we can give him a 5 year, $25M contract. Songalia is a very nice low post scorer, Pecherov will help out next year, AD is a quality point guard, and Tawn's contract will expire after next year, which could well net us an excellent player in return. Let's say the Bulls get the #1 pick in the draft and want to take Oden. Wouldn't it make sense for us to trade Tawn for Big Ben straight up? Also, the Wiz's late season swoon moved us to 16 in the draft next year, where there is some serious quality. What if Al Thornton falls, or Thaddeus Young? Those guys could come in and contribute right away. Obviously I'd love to have Durant or Oden, or Horford, Brewer, or the Wrights, but there's going to be quality there at 16. Another possibility to consider is the Jermaine O'Neal sweepstakes. ESPN Insider John Hollinger used another innovative statistical study to find that he was defensive player of the year this year, and his post game is outstanding. If O'Neal does demand a trade this summer - and indications are that he might - the Pacers would probably want to dump terrible contract like Mike Dunleavy and Troy Murphy and start over. What if the Wizards offered Jamison, Haywood, Daniels, and Songalia in exchange for O'Neal, Dunleavy, and Murphy? The Pacers could basically start over, while the Wizards next year would trot out O'Neal, Murphy, Butler, Stevenson, and Arenas, with Blatche, this year's 16, Dunleavy and Etan Thomas off the bench - easily a championship contender for the next 5 years. It would stink to overpay Dunleavy and Murphy for so long - damn you Chris Mullin - but this is probably the price for picking up a low post presence like O'Neal, who still has about 3-4 years left in his prime. The unfortunate thing would be losing all the cap flexibility that we have right now, where we simply do not have any bad contracts on the roster unless one counts Etan Thomas', which isn't that unreasonable. As for the Skins, we need a WR, and some more D-linemen. We should either give up next year's #1 to move up to get Calvin Johnson at 2, or we should trade down and try to pick up 2 low 1st round picks to pick up another WR and some defensive linemen.

I'm Every Woman

Posted on August 08, 2008 in Diabetes erectile dysfunction

The scene: Labor and Delivery Night Call. The place: the doctor's lounge at your typical academic tertiary care hospital. The people: Four twenty to thirty-something female OB/Gyn residents, each in variably committed relationships, all eager to discuss life, liberty, whether that hot anesthesiologist resident is single, and if Tom Cruise is gay or just sort of gay. Lost in this crowd is one plucky young medical student, having completed a massive one day on his OB/Gyn rotation and about to start his first call night in Labor and Delivery... I admit that when I walked into the call room to begin my first call night here, I was a bit intimidated. Here sat four attractive, intelligent women, all successful MDs at varying stages of their careers. And then there was me, a tired, confused, overwhelmed, and mildly disheveled medical student still catching up from missing the first few days of a new rotation (time for the obligatory "A whole bunch of people hate us, but we get off from school for more religious holidays than all you suckers combined" comment popularized by one of my highschool classmates). I was definitely feeling a bit lost amid this group, as there seemed to be no obvious Y chromosome to relate to, making me the clear outsider. Would they reject me? Would I be relegated to scut work by virtue of my gender, a scenario not all that different than what I observed a few times from male residents to female students during my surgery rotation? Would any of these women go out with me? Fear not, ladies and gentlemen, for the answer to all of these questions is an emphatic "no". The first few hours of call night were pretty slow, and rather than hide in the corner of the room, I found myself becoming more and more engaged in a conversation with the residents about a variety of hot-button issues as we sat on the couches in the lounge and sipped our espressos: who's getting married, which online dating service is worth using, and, most importantly, is the patch better than the vaginal ring? Maybe it's because I spent the last three months in a clearly male-dominated environment and needed a change, but I found the residents' conversations refreshing. Before I knew it, I was totally getting into this conversation. Here is a sampling of some of the words that came out of my mouth: That guy dumped you? He's a fool! She slept with both of them? Dirty ho! That's the best excuse he could come up with? Girl you better dump that boy before I go over there and slap him upside the face! Let's watch Access Hollywood. Isn't Noah Wylie just so dreamy? Why aren't there any doctors like him around here? Don't mess with that nurse, she's on her period! What's the next book for Oprah's book club? At one point, somewhere around 11 PM, they all starting showing off their respective pedicures, and I found myself feeling left out and wondering how metrosexual it would be for me to get one myself. Then they all started braiding each other's hair. I shit you not. Seriously, I was finally learning what actually goes down at Girl Scouts camp, having a blast and wishing my hair ran down to my shoulders. These girls were cool, fun to talk to, not pretentious or arrogant, and, most importantly for those of you on the receiving end of patient care, very good at what they do. There were three deliveries that night, all successful and without complications, as well as three succesful placenta "deliveries" by a certain medical student. (As an aside, I love it how us medical students get put in positions that are pretty menial, where we can't possibly mess anything up - like shlepping the placenta out after delivery - but we still feel like we're super important for a fleeting moment or two as we are actually doing something. Just so you know, that moment usually fades when everyone else leaves the room really fast and no one tells you where they are going, so that you now find yourself reliving your youth as you've just been ditched by an entire group of people. Not that that has ever happened to me before or anything.) In all, it was a great night. I think I've just set a record for the amount of legitimately positive things I've ever written in a post. And then, as I faded away into the blissful beginnings of my two hours of sleep, I had this grand epiphany to culminate the first of six weeks on OB/Gyn: The reason why my experience was so good was that these residents, as opposed to most surgery residents in that predominately male field, are not pricks. And the reason why they are not pricks is because...well...they don't have any. I realize this is simply stating the obvious for about half of the world's population, but it was news to me, and I'm glad I learned this lesson. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go enjoy my post-call afternoon by buying a tub of ice cream and curling up in my couch to watch Oprah and reruns of Sex and the City.

Viagara for Sex Offenders -- Not an Onion Satire

Posted on July 23, 2008 in Erectile dysfunction drugs

At hang in, there's everything we can Fully agree upon: It's bad assemblage guideline to provision Medicaid reimbursement owing to Viagara and additional erectile dysfunction to sex offenders. No one--not Jesse Jackson, not continuous the A.C.L.U. -- objected until Gov. Notch R. Warner signed an emergency operation blocking the kindness Because 52 of Virginia's registered offenders. The not often meaning of subsidizing the hunger of sex offenders is so ludicrous this express a government bureaucracy acting imaginable auto-pilot or the satirical Net notification The Onion -- exclusive of today's headlines: \"Bush Caught amidst Single of His Specific Terror Traps\") -- could enclose access gone with it. But there's a larger division: Why is Medicaid subsidizing erectile dysfunction drugs due to anyone ? Understandinging to Frank Green's expression betwixt today's Richmond Times-Dispatch , the Centers since Medicare conjointly Medicaid Services worth this Medicaid spends nearby $38 million a era nationally on erectile dysfunction drugs. With principally uncommon out of 40 U.S. residents conscious between the Old Proprietorship, that would imply all over $1 hundred thousand a tour paid here bounded by Virginia. Medicaid is busting the drum budget. Shouldn't we be husbanding our finite yield whereas long-term pawn of the infirm, still being treatment of serious illnesses within the poor rather than as a lifestyle progression? Given our parlous fiscal brass tacks, paying general public dollars to buy Viagara being anyone is a scandal. Unfortunately, Gov. Warner cannot eponym a commitment comfortably payments to the broader Medicaid population. Virginia roll ins to be bound finished a 1998 Medicaid integrate mandating coverage over the drugs. (I wonder whose lobbyist got this regulation within?) Perhaps it's allotment owing to Virginia's congressional delegation to take in to deal on reversing that the book.

Loonies at Uni

Posted on July 09, 2008 in Diabetes erectile dysfunction

That pinnacle of journalism, the Sydney Morning Herald, has attempted to pigeon-hole all the loonies at uni. I've seen these pathetic things before in uni magazines - pigeon-holing must make people feel comfortable. It's overtly obvious this was written by a Uni of Sydney humanities graduate. But where does a loony like me fit in? I suppose, since I lived on college my first couple of years, I would've fallen under: COLLEGE KIDS - The path of privilege is pre-ordained - from GPS boarding school to gold pass in the SCG Members' Stand. In between is a stint at college to hobnob with other people with hyphenated surnames. Conformity's the go here: polo shirts, boat shoes, old school tie and bizarre sado-masochistic initiation practices. Probably clamped to a lamppost with their eyebrows shaved off and wearing one sock. Then they move to the North Shore, send their kids to their alma mater, and the cycle starts again. Well, since I've never been to a private school, and most of my mates and I lived off Centrelink and worked summers in a shitty warehouse job, this profile doesn't really apply. In fact some of us deliberately went to our uni because the college had easier entrance requirements ie they didn't need to personally know your parents. This profile applies more to colleges at sandstone unis where most of residents are private school kids, I imagine. But by all means, keep the stereotypes flourishing. Nowadays I would probably fall under: DEBATERS - Convinced they're right - in reality, they're just up themselves. Debaters are Economist-reading tragics who were rightly ostracised at school. Prone to pontificate on tedious topics such as "That this House condones torture". Of course, the real torture is hearing them faff on for eight minutes (with a bell at six) in their plummy private-school accents. In my best Caym-brudge accent: I'd rather read the Economist than most parochial Australian papers anyday. And I'm not convinced I'm right, I know I'm right. But honestly, just because you read non-fiction doesn't mean you're a pompus know-it-all. Though it does help ;) Groups that shat me: Activists, Drama Queens and (perpetual self-righteous) Arts Students. Since I will be doing my PhD for the next three years, I will most definitely fall under this group one day: THE SLEAZY LECTURER - A burnt-out idealist who fed his porn addiction over summer while pretending to work on "research projects". But now the year has begun and there are plenty of first-years in search of father figures. Watch the lecturer's eyes flicker, scoping potential targets. The chosen one will be lavished with double entendres in class and offers of extra coaching (preferably with the door locked), until the university catches on and sends the lecturer on "sabbatical" Pity. I chose the wrong research area. There's not too many girls in my field - unless I go to Uni of Melbourne...
