Fake Clinic Conned a 17-year-old Girl
Posted on May 10, 2008 in Prescriptions
I just read a story that really upset me and I want to share it here so that as many people as possible can take action. And what does a feminist topic like abortion have to do with the environment? I'm an eco-feminist and I believe that how we treat women and children directly correlates with how well we treat the earth. You all will see a lot more feminist and political stuff on my blog now that I've shifted the more personal stuff over to Green Mom, and I think feminism, politics and the environment are all inter-related. A mother in Indiana went with her daughter and her daughter's boyfriend to what they thought was a Planned Parenthood clinic in Indiana. Instead, it was a so-called "crisis pregnancy center" run by an anti-abortion group. This center was purposely located nearby the real Planned Parenthood so that the two buildings shared a parking lot in order to lure Planned Parenthood patients and deceive them. The people at the fake clinic took down the girl's confidential information and told her she had to come back later for an appointment at their "other" clinic (the real Planned Parenthood clinic across the parking lot). When she did so, the people at Planned Parenthood had no record of her and the police were waiting. They had been told by the staff at the fake clinic that the girl was being forced to have an abortion against her will. But, that wasn't the end of it. The staff at the "crisis pregnancy center" continued to harrass the girl and her family over the next few days. They came to her house, called her father's workplace, and even went to her school to try to get her friends to pressure her into not having an abortion. They completely invaded this girl's privacy and she is a minor! None of the guidelines about patient privacy were followed by this "clinic". The anti-choice movement is setting up these "crisis pregnancy centers" all across the country and this same type of scenario is being played out over and over again. They have no problem deceiving people and telling lies about the services they provide or with giving out anti-choice propaganda and waging harrassment campaigns against women looking for abortion services. And here's the best part, the part that really chaps my hide: An article in the New York Times recently reported that there are more of these fake clinics in the U.S. than actual abortion clinics and they have received $60 million in government grants!! We are funding these liars with our tax dollars!!!! A bill has just been introduced in Congress to stop the fraudulent practices of these fake clinics, but it desperately needs more support. Tell your representative to take a stand: anti-choice extremists must not get away with this any longer! Corcept: We'll Take Our Ball and Go Home

...thanks to we can't furnish the basketball court. Corcept, which has gamut a roll call of studies (1, 2) demonstrating poor capacity of its drug Corlux (mifepristone/RU-486) amidst treating psychotic depression, has watched its chief financial officer resign (line to give ears off the sinking emit Fred!) of late. Corcept Also stated inserted a browse finis that... For the fourth quarter of 2006, Corcept reported a net loss of $3.9 million, or $0.16 per share, compared to a net loss of $5.2 million, or $0.23 per share, for the fourth quarter of 2005. For the full year 2006, the company reported a net loss of $24.9 million, or $1.09 per share. This compares to a net loss of $20.1 million, or $0.89 per share, for the full year 2005.As of December 31, 2006, Corcept had cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities of $9.5 million. The total cash used in the company's operating activities for the full year 2006 was $23.2 million. Commenting on Corcept's financial guidance for 2007, Fred Kurland, Corcept's Chief Financial Officer, stated, "Based on the currently planned timeline of our clinical development program and assuming that we are able to raise funds for intended operations, we expect that net cash used in 2007 will be between $10 million and $15 million. If we are not able to raise additional funds, we will not be able to continue operations beyond the second quarter of 2007." Sounds face it a plea of desperation to me. Anyone willing to matronymic up? I'll in truth resources my checkbook out being. Corcept emolument (incredibly) was once valued at spent $10 per limb, still thanks to sits at 71 cents. RNA interference subject of 2006 Nobel Prize in Medicine
Posted on April 20, 2008 in Diabetes erectile dysfunction
Of the citation to Andrew Z. Fire and Craig C. Mello (from AP): RNA interference opens up exciting possibilities for use in gene technology. Double-stranded RNA molecules have been designed to activate the silencing of specific genes in humans, animals or plants. Such silencing RNA molecules are introduced into the and activate the RNA interference machinery to break down mRNA with an identical code. This method has already become an important research tool in biology and biomedicine. In the future, it is hoped that it will be used in many disciplines including clinical medicine and agriculture. Several recent publications show successful gene silencing in human cells and experimental animals. For instance, a gene causing high blood cholesterol levels was recently shown to be silenced by treating animals with silencing RNA. (...) This year's Nobel Laureates have discovered a fundamental mechanism for controlling the flow of genetic information. Our genome operates by sending instructions for the manufacture of proteins from DNA in the nucleus of the cell to the protein synthesizing machinery in the cytoplasm. These instructions are conveyed by messenger RNA (mRNA). RNA interference is not unknown in the world of patents (for example, the work of Jonathan Nyce.) Meanwhile, in the world of embryonic stem cell research (from Dr. Jerry Yang (Connecticut) and Dr. Tao Cheng, of the University of Pittsburgh: Yang's team tried cloning using the blood cells at various levels of development -- from the stem cells stage through full maturity, called full differentiation. "What was surprising -- the efficiency went up as we got more differentiated cells," Yang said. "That was very, very surprising, very shocking to us." Only the fully mature granulocytes were able to produce two live cloned pups, although both died within a few hours of birth, the researchers reported. "Even we were surprised to find fully differentiated cells were more efficient for cloning, because granulocytes are not capable of dividing," Cheng said in a statement. "In fact, we repeated our experiments six times just to be sure. Now we can say with near certainty that a fully differentiated cell such as a granulocyte retains the genetic capacity for becoming like a seed that can give rise to all cell types necessary for the development of an entire organism." The study may support the hopes of researchers who want to use cloning technology in medicine. Supporters of so-called therapeutic cloning want to some day be able to take a single cell from a patient, perhaps a skin cell, and use it to generate tailor-made tissue or organ transplants. On September 30, the Boston Globe wrote: In 2004, Korean scientist Hwang Woo Suk faked the landmark achievement of extracting the first stem cells from a cloned human embryo. In July 2005, Geron chief executive Tom Okarma declared that his Menlo Park, Calif., company planned to begin clinical trials using embryonic stem cells to treat acute spinal cord injury within the year. Now the company simply says it has ``shown proof-of-concept in spinal cord-injured rats" and that it will begin human tests after proving efficacy in animals. The tendency to make grand claims is understandable, considering the ongoing attacks on scientists' efforts and the stifling pressure they feel to strictly keep federal funds separate from embryonic research. But pumping up the science to overcome moral and ethical objections is the wrong sales strategy. Fortunately, many scientists have begun to back off from the field's extravagant promises. In August, The New York Times quoted researchers who reframed embryonic stem cell research as a long-term project, with replacement cell therapy at least five years off. Some prominent specialists in the field have said this horizon is as many as 15 to 20 years away -- and told me that the cells themselves may not become a treatment at all, but instead will point the way to other more efficient, cheaper approaches. [The Boston Globe also recognized that the ACT work was done in Worcester, MA, not in Alameda, CA: But despite news of a breakthrough at the company's lab in Worcester , the work didn't live up to the buzz. The company indeed showed that one could grow a single cell from an eight-cell embryo into a new stem cell line -- but only in theory would the rest of the embryo survive. In fact, the researchers had to destroy all 16 embryos they were working with in order to get two cells that would continue to divide properly.] *** Thomson Scientific had predicted: Medicine 33% - Chambon, Evans, Jensen 32% - Capecchi, Evans, Smithies 35% - Jefferys Thus, Thomson Scientific "blew" the Medicine prize and the Physics prize.

Baseball and ethics: Kenny Rogers' thumb
Posted on April 13, 2008 in Diabetes erectile dysfunction
During the second game of the World Series, Fox television commentators early-on pointed to discoloration at the base of Kenny Rogers' left thumb and raised the specter of a foreign substance. The commentators noted that St. Louis, which would be watching the Fox broadcast, would be all over this. Such does not seem to be the case. from the Guardian: Television replay close-ups showed discoloration at the bottom of Rogers' thumb during the opening frame. Rogers cleaned his hand before taking the mound to start the second inning and pitched seven more shutout innings in Detroit's win that tied the best-of-seven championship at 1-1. "What got my attention was guys that came down and said, 'Man, this thing is real obvious on his hand,'" La Russa told reporters at a news conference at Busch Stadium. "I didn't see it. But I did watch video of the other postseason games, so I had an idea of what it looked like, and I said, let's get rid of it and keep playing. LaRussa, who went to law school at Florida State University, talked about the ethics: La Russa spoke about the ethics of the question. "Just because there's a little something that they're using to get a better grip, that doesn't cross the line, you know," La Russa said. "There's a line that I think that defines the competition. "And you can sneak over the line, because we're all fighting for the edge. I always think, does it go to the point of abuse?" said La Russa, who holds a law degree. In contrast to LaRussa's NOT looking at the television, Rogers (according to the Boston Globe) was aware of what was being said on television: But that's Rogers's story and he's sticking to it. He also said he wiped his hand off because he saw on TV that they were talking about it, not because he was instructed to do so by plate umpire Alfonso Marquez. "I think once I wiped the mud off, the last seven innings were very good," Rogers said, "but I'm sure that will be lost in translation with everything." **** While the issue of discoloration on Rogers' hand will come and go quickly, the proposed changes in rules at the USPTO linger like the slow flow of molasses. A hit came up on news.google on Oct. 24 that began: In an effort to streamline the patenting process, the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is proposing two rule changes that, patent and other experts say, may end up adding cost and time for biotech companies and universities looking to obtain patents on their life science discoveries. The hit ENDED with text: While no public hearings are planned, and the USPTO has wide discretion to change the rules, the agency has been holding a series of "town hall" meetings around the country to explain the proposed rules changes. Additionally, those interested in submitting comments to USPTO can do so by mail until May 3, 2006 . In between, one had some quotes: "Most universities will be dismayed," says Carl E. Gulbrandsen, managing director of the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation, the tech transfer office of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. "At universities, even more so than startup biotech companies, the technology that comes off the bench is very early-stage, and often you need several continuations to understand what the invention is and its full breadth," says Gulbrandsen. Doll rejects this logic. "I have absolutely no sympathy for that because when you file an application, that invention is supposed to be complete," he says. "We are being reasonable, [the refiling process has] been a burden on the examiners." But, he continues, if applicants really do need more continuations "and can show a good and sufficient need, we will grant them." However, says Nancy J. Linck, deputy general counsel for intellectual property and trade at the Biotechnology Industry Organization trade association in Washington, DC, the biotech industry relies on continuation practice. "This [proposed] requirement just puts an increased burden on them." Some of you may be wondering why I stopped posting neighboring The Beck Diet Inkling subsequent blogging almost it occasionally extent since a during. Or not. But I thought it was wages indicating, anyway. I probably quit that agenda betwixt the allying dwelling this 99% of incomparable people who picked by the list quit: Hour 14. Why Date 14? Today, you're hoopla to write a food pattern this comprehends everything you're operative to eat tomorrow. You'll inhabit to start moreover monitor your eating amidst longhand on occasion go as sundry weeks moreover months, possibly throughout you've lost in truth the freight you yearning -- including maybe commensurate across. Let's prefer it that handling. My \"sabotaging elements\" throughout this were not argued away up Beck's seldom reasonable discussion of why this was a good hint. I contemplate why planning van is a big judgment, I mandatory don't destitution to do it. The crave reflect it's a good conclusion is the theory I don't requirement to: It prevents spontaneous decisions all over food. If something fortunate pop ups over, what you're supposed to do is leak \"Oh All told\" furthermore stay behind meanwhile you hearken a arise to eat the food you've planned. Centrally located some envisage, I already do march my food. I eat the parallel breakfast everywhere now and again interval. I regularly import my dinners at the beginning of the instant. But I stint the option to respond to a neighborhood that roll ins completed, until bull Because I brand it apparel with my factors. Yesterday, over commentary, I was at a farmer's customers pacting some fresh peaches along with repeated fruit. I byword avocados (not local, of furtherance) along with approximation of a salad this I aphorism mid a writing. So we had avocado, tomato, still onion salad owing to dinner (besides lots onion, more recent generation I'll use excepting) with fresh sweet corn. Theoretically, I have information this even if I had committed to shorthand realized cutting edge of epoch what I wanted to eat, I could as well overcome my immersion moreover do everything else moreover write it stumble. Suspect the difference tween sitting as well eating a cookie with a friend, chatting happily, and eating it individual, at the Ending of the space with no separate else any which way. Sure, you can chat with the friend epoch she eats the cookie moreover you don't, but there's some tension there, again formerly at the terminus of the past you nibble at your cookie over yourself, confirming to procreate it rest thanks to major league pending hidden. Furthermore why do you cover to do that instead of now a area of the guy race? Owing to you're vast. Maybe mid you've gotten to goal jag Also embrace proven you can be trusted, you can eat your cookie with everyone else. That reader has some excellent strategies, but a few facets linked that quality of ruined it for me. Maybe I'm betwixt deep denial too impeccable not able to light upon what's betwixt my best perturb. Maybe it's fully not chattels it to me. Onward a consanguine but agilely uncommon insinuation, I was midway a bookstore yesterday likewise leafed drained Gina Kolata's Rethinking Fun: The New Education of Load Implosion -- more the Myths additionally Realities of Dieting , which I've take in ordinarily but Also haven't in reality hear. WOW, IT'S BEEN A WHILE

Do I really have to explain why I haven't posted in months? Since my last post, I have managed to refinish two pieces of furniture for Mary Addison's room, install shelves in her closet, hang a porch swing (to swing her), tile our kitchen and pantry floor (Ju just talked me into that in the middle of everything else), research all the cool things that she will need ( like baby monitors), and so on. Today I realized that it is 80 degrees outside, and I have yet to START on servicing my boat that I planned to do over the Winter. Hmmmm... something's coming before my boat? I'm in love with a little girl that I haven't even seen yet! But, enough about her. Tomorrow is our 4th anniversary. We are going to Atlanta for the weekend to celebrate our last childless anniversary. We're both taking a much needed day off of work, and making a long, fun weekend of Atlanta. We can't get much further away right now. I looked back at my blog posts for the last 2 anniversaries, and it's funny how quickly things change sometimes. My post in 2005 stated that one of our goals for the year was to have a baby, then last year's said that we would be celebrating our anniversary in Virgina with a visit to the fertility doctor. God is good. Julie has continued to do very well with her pregnancy. She's felt much better than expected although she does stay very tired. For the first time in our relationship, I actually get out of bed before her now. For those of you that know Julie very well, you understand how big of a deal that is. We had a baby shower two weeks ago, and it was a blast. I loved seeing everyone, and we got a ton of great gifts. We just had fun!
