Ahh...multiplication tables. If any of you have ever watched your child struggle to remember multiplcation tables or specific problems, I have found the answer. I found the book, The Times Tables. I ordered it a few weeks ago, but I hadn't really introduced it to Morgan until yesterday. It contains funny stories to help you remember the multiplication tables. For example, each number has a picture (two = shoe, three = tree, four = door). Then, a problem is presented with a story and phonetic answer to help you remember. As an example, Morgan's favorite was 4X4 or Door X Door. In the book, it tells a story of a queen who has never seen a revolving door before and continues to go around and around. She gets sick so door x door = sick queen. Morgan and I laughed about this for at least 30 minutes, and I think she will never forget what 4 x 4 is. She went through the WHOLE book yesterday. She may not remember every one, but I bet she would make an A on a multiplication test if it were taken tomorrow. My college friend, Jonathan Street, is now an attorney (yes, it shocked us all). I came for Daphne Loves Derby, but stayed for Quietdrive. Quietdrive really surprised me for a band I've never heard of. They sorta sound like a Something Corperate, Fall Out Boy, Yellowcard hybrid, which is definitely a good thing. Right now I'm obsessed with "Take a Drink" and "Rise From the Ashes". Definitely worth a listen. They even whipped out an electric violin near the end, but it wasn't whiney, generic Yellowcard type sound. Much deeper with more of an edge. They mixed in a bit of acoustic guitar and a few slow songs too for a well rounded show. I can definitely see these guys taking off soon. Daphne Loves Derby was better live than I expected too. I was expected a slow, mellow acoustic show with a lot of laid back guitar and relaxed vocals. Not at all. They completely rocked even on the more mellow songs on their CD, like "Christmas Lights" or "Midnight Highway". They sounded so much better electric and uptempo, I wish they would have done more of that on their last album. I attempted to make a high quality recording on the only slow song, but somehow it didn't quite turn out. But, for your listening pleasure, here it is: Ahhh. What a soothing melody. Heh. Oh, and I did get a chance to say hi to the lead singer, Kenny, on my way in. Very cool. Socratic was there too, and they were pretty fun to watch. I've been listening to "Lunch in the Sky" for a week now, and it still rocks. I wish I would have known them better beforehand, because they were really good too, and most opening bands aren't. But the White House Office of Management and Budget undermined that acknowledgment by inserting language in the guidelines that make it easy for industry to block EPA from following them when assessing cancer-causing chemicals. "The White House decided it was more important to protect the chemical industry than protect our kids from cancer," said Dr. Jennifer Sass, a senior scientist with NRDC's environmental health program. The guidelines announced today, which dictate how EPA regulates cancer-causing chemicals, finalize a draft policy issued by EPA in March 2003. That draft policy included supplemental guidelines for assessing cancer risks to children. The guidelines had to go through several rigorous scientific reviews before they were released today. EPA's draft guidelines, including the children's supplemental, first passed through an internal agency review two years ago. The agency's Scientific Advisory Board reviewed the guidelines and agreed with EPA's conclusion that early-life exposures to chemical pollutants increase cancer risk. The board recommended finalizing EPA's draft guidelines as written. The guidelines then went to the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for scrutiny, where they languished until today. Out of public view, OMB substantially weakened the guidelines by adding language that will allow the chemical industry to contest policy decisions more easily, according to NRDC. Specifically, OMB inserted language allowing for "expert elicitation," opening the door for any outside party to challenge the way EPA applies the guidelines to assess chemicals. Such a challenge could slow the agency down for months, if not years, in making a decision on regulating a cancer-causing chemical, according to NRDC. OMB further weakened the guidelines by adding language requiring any EPA cancer evaluation to meet the standards of the Data Quality Act, a law designed by tobacco industry consultants to quash protective regulations. By opening the process to relentless industry challenges, said Dr. Sass, OMB set the bar so high that children will not be adequately protected from many cancer-causing chemicals.
