Posted on September 29, 2008 in Prescriptions
All you patients out there in 115th Dreamland grab hold of yer rock 'n roll stethoscopes. The sun is goin' down and the moon is beginin' to rise over the asylum. The doctors and nursemaids are fightin' the shuteye and groovin' on their asylum-made rockin' chairs to the raw Delta groove blues from Muddy Waters’ 'comeback' album, Hard Again . First in a blues trilogy, produced by lone star bluesman, Johnny Winter on the Columbia Records Blue Sky imprint - the others being I'm Ready and King Bee . Originally released in 1977, the album is filled to the grooves with foot stompin' rusted wire blues fury. Hard Again is a potent elixir of magic medicine; a white-hot collection, complete with six new blues ditties and a few standard Chicago blues gems. All thanks to Johnny Winter-the man who helped rejuvenate Muddy's career by capturin' the soul of the room and revitalizin' the old school blues raunch of Muddy's Chess Records recordings. For the record, Muddy was 62-years-old when the album was recorded. Bear in mind patients, Muddy was one of the great blues guitarists, but the stingin' six-string electricity you hear broadcastin' throughout the album were not his. Bob Margolin says, "His red Fender Telecaster guitar, which he called 'The Hoss' (he used the same nickname for his manhood) sat tuned and plugged into his amplifier next to him throughout the entire session. Muddy never picked it up..." Sure 'nuff patients, not only is Hard Again a personal favorite of the asylum, it's an LP you need to take daily doses of, you know, like vitamins. The Bird Flu Threat: Public Health Vs. Pharmaceutical Profits
Posted on August 23, 2008 in Generic medical release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NOVEMBER 2, 2005 8:00 AM CONTACT: Institute for Public Accuracy Sam Husseini, (202) 347-0020, (202) 421-6858; or David Zupan, (541) 484-9167 The Bird Flu Threat: Public Health Vs. Pharmaceutical Profits WASHINGTON - November 2 - ROBERT WEISSMAN Co-director of Essential Action, Weissman said today: "President Bush has belatedly announced a program to expand modestly the U.S. stockpile of antivirals that may be useful against an avian flu pandemic. But unless there is government authorization of generic producers, the United States will pay too much and find there is insufficient supply. Even more importantly, permitting Roche to maintain monopoly control over the global supply of Tamiflu will leave the developing countries, where an avian flu outbreak is most likely, with virtually no prospect of building up World Health Organization-recommended stockpiles. Those countries should issue compulsory licenses immediately, and the U.S. should give its blessing." Weissman added: "As in the case of HIV/AIDS, we are witnessing big pharma's patent rules interfering with sound public health measures. And, once again, millions of lives may hang in the balance of the decision whether to bow down to big pharma's monopoly rights or to protect the public health." More Information Dr. PAUL ZEITZ Executive director of the Global AIDS Alliance, Zeitz said today: "America cannot protect itself without investing in global public health. ... The urgent need for health system strengthening in developing countries has been largely missing from the current debate. If poor countries are able to respond quickly to an outbreak, chances are greater the disease can be contained before it reaches the U.S. ... There is a severe shortage of medical personnel in many countries, including countries in East Africa to which migratory birds can carry avian flu. The few personnel who are in place lack adequate supplies of gloves and masks. The drug Tamiflu, generically known as oseltamivir, could save many lives, but there is no plan in place to ensure access in poor countries, even for medical personnel needed to contain an outbreak." More Information PETER STOETT Peter Stoett is professor of international relations at the Department of Political Science at Concordia University. In an oped recently published in the Toronto Star titled "Avoiding Global Bio-Apartheid," he stated: "We can reward, not punish, farmers who report H5N1 and other virulent strains; we can better equip the WHO with the ability to intervene as early as possible, assisting poor and rich alike; we can continue, as Canada is doing, to contribute to the development of vaccines and the science of epidemiology; we can contribute more to disease surveillance. ... Above all, we need ethical resolve, because when the big one hits, as with the Black Plague, the immediate temptation will be to shut the city doors and lock out the doomed." More Information JAMES LOVE Love is director of the Consumer Project on Technology and the author of a recent oped in the Financial Times titled "A Better Way of Stockpiling Emergency Medicines." Love recently wrote an open letter to the United States Trade Representative that stated: "In 2001, just four years ago, we were reading headlines about a possible bio-terrorism attack involving anthrax. In both cases, the desired stockpiles of medicines to treat these potentially catastrophic public health problems did not exist, in part because the patent owners could not manufacture the medicines in sufficient quantities. "In 2001, then Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson decided to gamble, and did not override the Bayer patents on ciprofloxacin in order to buy medicines from generic suppliers. As a consequence, the U.S. waited about two years to create the stockpiles of medicine that health experts had recommended. Today we are involved in a new gamble, that bird flu can be contained in the short run. Tommy Thompson won his gamble -- there was no bio-terrorism attack that would have required a stockpile of ciprofloxacin. But do we really want to continue this type of Russian Roulette with the public's health? ... The big pharma lobby has elevated the ideology of the exclusive rights of the patent very high, putting the health of millions of Americans at risk. This is a mistake, and should be corrected." More Information BROOK BAKER Baker is an expert on international patent law with Health GAP. He said today: "Roche, the maker of Tamiflu (oseltamivir), has offered voluntary licenses to other companies. ... [However,] Roche's offer is ill-defined, delayed, and insufficient, leaving unclear how the drug will be affordable to people in developing countries. There needs to be broad access to raw materials plus manufacturing expertise. In addition, the U.S. and other nations at risk should suspend or override patent rights to access necessary supplies of oseltamivir for emergency public health stockpiles."

We've had a very productive weekend. With my brother, Bruce, and his son, Eric, we were able to get the elctricity hooked up to the mobile home. Now all we need to do on that is cover the long trench. That'll be easy with the tractor. We didn't get the well finished. We just ran out of steam and daylight. We did get water hooked up to the mobile home, however. We just hooked it up to my brother's well for now. Bruce has done an amazing amount of work to get us into our temporary home. The sewer that my cousin, Ricky, put in works like a dream, too. Ah, the things that become really important when you don't have them. We were very thankful for him this past weekend. While he was putting in the sewer system, he also dug the trenches for the plumbing and electricity. If he hadn't done that we would still be digging rather than having power at this point. I also put in a phone jack and ran the cable under the floor to the end of the house. We should have that live again on Thursday. Guess I'd better go buy a phone, now. We still haven't gotten our recently purchased '91 pickup running. It supposed to go to the mechanic today, but the battery is dead again. According to the charger the battery is fully charged, but we left it charging, anyway. I'm starting to wonder if we made a mistake buying this one. Also, my youngest daughter's Blazer had the door smashed in while it was parked this weekend. It's always something, isn't it? The bed we were sleeping on last night started falling apart on my side. I finally ended up staying up all night. It's not the first night I've stayed up since the fire. At least we've having an eventful year. James has rewitten the part of the book he lost in the fire and has started the new part of the story. Progress. If this post makes no sense, remember I had no sleep.

"A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. Homeopathy and Herbalism on the NHS: Who Receives It and Why?
Posted on July 13, 2008 in Prescriptions
An interesting paper in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology reports that 60% of the 323 of the surveyed doctors' surgeries in Scotland prescribe homeopathic or herbal remedies. Researchers examined the prescribing data for 1.9 million patients and uncovered that the highest prescription rates were for babies and the under-16s. 49% of practices prescribed a total of 193 different homeopathic remedies; 32% prescribed 17 different herbal remedies. 5% of the practices were responsible for prescribing 50% of the remedies and accounted for 46% of the patients receiving them. 4160 patients (2.2 per 1000 registered patients) were prescribed at least one homeopathic remedy during the study period. 73% were female and the average age of patients was 47. Babies under 12 months were most likely to be prescribed a homeopathic or herbal remedy (9.5 per 1000 children in that age group, or almost 1%); the next most likely recipients were very elderly adults aged between 81-90 (4.5 per 1000). 16% of homeopathic prescriptions were for children under 16. Fewer patients received a prescription for herbal remedies (361). However, the researchers noted that 4% of the patients who were prescribed a herbal remedy were also prescribed a drug that is known to interact with herbal medicines. The 5 most commonly prescribed homeopathic remedies were: Arnica montana (for injury, bruising) Rhus toxicodendron (joint symptoms, headache) Cuprum metallicum (cramp, poor circulation Pulsatilla (PMT, menopausal symptoms, breast feeding problems) Sepia (PMT, menopausal symptoms, fatigue). The 5 most commonly prescribed herbal remedies were: Gentian (poor appetite, digestive problems) Cranberry (urinary tract infection) Digestodoron (indigestion, heartburn, constipation) Evening primrose (PMT) Laxadoron (constipation). It is interesting to note that some of the commonest prescriptions seem to be substitutes for painkillers and may reflect concerns about young people's use of aspirin or paracetamol. Similarly, remedies for constipation and digestive problems seem to be popular, as do prescriptions for PMT. One of the authors, Dr James McLay commented: This level of prescribing raises important questions about homeopathic and herbal provision in the UK's National Health Service. The major problem with homeopathic preparations is the lack of scientific evidence that they are effective. Given the rise of evidence-based medicine and the trend toward prescribing guidance in the UK, should therapies with no convincing positive clinical trial evidence be prescribed and funded by the health service...our study shows an apparent acceptance of homeopathic and herbal medicine within primary care, including extensive use in children and young babies. We believe that these findings underline the need for a critical review of this prescribing trend. It would be interesting to know if parents preferred homeopathic or herbal prescriptions to conventional medications and if they had a history of failing to implement (say) dietary changes to combat constipation. Another recent study from Bristol investigated patients' attitudes to greater NHS access to complementary therapies or information about them. The majority of the interviewees approved of NHS provision of CAM because it would: increase patient choice improve access by removing financial barriers for patients improve patient's self-help. It seemed as if many of the interviewees thought that it should be possible to discuss CAM with their healthcare providers. As a minimum, the majority of participants wanted NHS health professionals to be more 'open' towards and know more about complementary therapies than their patients - perceived as not currently usual...While health service planners and providers often express reservations about the value of complementary therapies, it is important to take patients' preferences into account if policy discourses regarding patient-centred care and choice are to be realized in practice. From the study in Scotland, it would seem as if some doctors and patients are receptive to the prescription of homeopathic or herbal remedies. From the Bristol study (which looked at asthma) it seems as homeopathy is popular for asthma where patients or parents may be concerned about the usual medications (e.g., corticosteroids). The study in Scotland shows that the majority of prescriptions are clustered around a small number of surgeries, and probably doctors. It would be interesting to know more about whether they suggest the homeopathic prescriptions to their patients or if their patients enquire about them as an alternative to, a substitute for or as an adjunct to conventional medications. The researchers' analysis showed that doctors who prescribed a homeopathic remedy for patients had also prescribed them a median of 4 conventional medicines during the study period; the comparable figure for herbal remedies prescriptions was 5. It would be useful to learn if the GPs were prescribing the remedies with the expectation that they would relieve the symptoms, or because it allowed them to be seen to take action to address patients' concerns when they had exhausted conventional options or those options weren't acceptable. However, Dr. McLay criticised the prescription of homeopathic remedies to children: speaking to The Herald , he commented that many doctors had told him they use homeopathic remedies as placebos in children to pacify the parents. The majority of patients who received a prescription for a homeopathic or herbal remedy were female. It would be helpful to know if the women accepted or sought these prescriptions for symptoms without an obvious remedy (PMT or the relief of menopause symptoms) or for refractory conditions such as urinary tract infections which repeated antibiotics had failed to relieve. Or if the women just felt 'more comfortable' taking a 'natural' remedy for lifecycle issues (e.g., PMT or the menopause). Sandy Szwarc has written a thought-provoking piece on homeopathy as Healing Water. Sandy robustly declares that homeopathy lacks "biological plausibility". Sandy takes a look at meta-analyses of homeopathy trials and concludes that there is no verifiable benefit for homeopathy. Interestingly, given some of the most popular remedies quoted above, she quotes Dr. Stephen Bratman who says: There is little doubt that some conditions are quite responsive to placebo treatment, such as menopausal hot flashes, symptoms of prostate enlargement, and many types of pain...While it

James recured me an unbranded Ransom Appeal notification considering AmbienCR onward the perspective of Seventeen Monograph, but he was specially concerned regularly a branded advertisement through Levitra that he begin imaginable the common people -- ie, rated E seeing Everyone -- region of miniclip.com, \"an awesomely avocation bag jungle.\" The screen oral is shown below. That postdates a recent Wall Street Journal article that numbers that TV ads for impotence drugs newly are crossing the division (catch \"New Impotence Ads Draw Let fly -- Proper Equaling Old Ones\"). \"Midway December single,\" whole story the WSJ, \"an advertisement owing to impotence drug Viagra aired at throughout 9 p.m. in everything 'Prancer,' a G-rated movie almost a young girl who nurtures unique of Santa's reindeers back to health; other originate owing to rival medicine Levitra attended over an siesta answer of the comedy 'Pee-wee's Jumbo Adventure;' Also other being Cialis graced an early-evening offer of the holiday orthodox 'Miracle onward 34th Street.' \"Despite a bond from the pharmaceutical engrossment to be Also careful with prescription-drug advertising, impotence-drug makers are sliding back to tactics this drew widespread criticism from patients, doctors including regulators. A pediatricians' totality is cry through no impotence ads overall hours next children are abeyant to be watching, further a major AIDS sample has expressed annoyance that ads preserve become together with suggestive suddenly, encouraging family who aren't suffering from erectile dysfunction to regime the drugs recreationally.\" Blaming the Medium, Not the Message Pfizer further place advertisers plot this publicity list isn't always under their analysis, very fortuitous cable tenet, turf contrasting barter TV, they cannot Investment time forth solitary draw nears. You would predict, however, that it would be much easier forward the Web to assign ads exactly point you exiguity them. \"Levitra has no calling pushover a human race gaming point,\" says Gardner. \"Unless miniclip.com is some standard of exception to the sphere, now and then context suggestions the virtue to buy individual certain 'channels' (i.e. not the people unexampled), and the skill to take visitor demographics.\" I enter he's got a leadership. Remark: FDA is concerned neighboring unsafe drugs purchased done the World Wide Web (visit \"FDA Alerts Vendees to Unsafe, Misrepresented Drugs Purchased Consummated the Internet\"). Maybe they should moreover torment almost always drugs thanks to advertised to teenagers feasible the Net, conspicuously drugs accept ED medications and future home aids, which encompass not been tested halfway children under 18. \"Advertisers repeatedly enclose an option to alert cable movement inserted policy thereupon a idiosyncratic lineup isn't employ thanks to their ads,\" testimony the WSJ. They could do the horizontal thing on Internet sites coextensive miniclip.com -- truly head the common people locality when off ambit. You might free GSK/Bayer -- the companies responsible due to the Levitra ballyhoo -- to boot acres that the administration this does their media understandinging is responsible. Gardner, however, doesn't buy this safeguard. He who pays the piper is ultimately responsible. \"Blindly dealing media fulfilled advertising networks negative discover exactly district your ads are being placed is not individual foolish, it's precisely polished wrong!\" he says. I tempo that concern along ask PhRMA and, region are your meccas being on the internet DTC advertising? Best Bacon Ever!
Posted on July 05, 2008 in Erectile dysfunction drugs
Now I have purchased some cheap bacon in my life, but I think this one tops them all. I must say that it is mostly my fault because I wasn't paying too much attention, but this should be illegal! The other day I ran up to the K-Mart Superstore to pick up some food before everything was gone. Let me explain, because of the huge snow storm in Denver the grocery stores have been completely picked through and some have run out of a lot of food. Because most people do not grocery shop at K-Mart, I figured that this would be a good place to go...and I was right (well kinda). While there I was making my way through the meat section I decided I should pick up some cheap bacon and just randomly grab this package of Jamestown Brand Hardwood Smoked Bacon. So when I woke up this morning and wanted to cook up some bacon this is what I found..... Yummmmmm! Zero carbs and only $1.79! This would be perfect for any Atkins Diet!

WPT Whores

Is nothing sacred? At the end of this week's World Poker Tour broadcast, from the Legends of Poker at the Bicycle Casino in L.A., after Alex Kahaner took down Cowboy Kenna James, Mike Sexton gathered the usual throng for the end of show toast. "And now, as is our custom on the World Poker Tour, we toast our champion, Alex Kahaner, with the official beer of the World Poker Tour: Budweiser ." Huh? What? Every degenerate knows that Michelob Amberbock is the official beer of the World Poker Tour, just like Levitra is the official erectile dysfunction drug of the World Series of Poker. You can't just throw any old boner-builder's name on the felt - I mean, the Saturday Night Live parody "Doctor Poerkenheimer's Boner Juice" wouldn't do, and neither would Viagra. When I think WSOP and erectile dysfunction, I think Levitra. Similarly, when I think WPT and beer, there's only one right answer: Michelob Amberbock. It's like peanut butter & jelly. Apparently, WPT has sold their soul to the King of Beers, and thrown away their long standing relationship with Michelob. Shame on you WPT. If you're going to be money whores - how about at least making some decisions that get your stock price up - like properly marketing your show, and your online poker site. Perhaps Foxwood's new "WPT World Poker Room," will get the ball rolling. Of course, that would require Foxwoods to run their room like they care, instead of like a place that's the "only poker room in New England," with a captive audience who can either sit there and take their shit, or not play poker in a casino. -KD

Wolcott "gets it" about Stephen Colbert
Posted on May 31, 2008 in Generic biologicals
James Wolcott has the best take I've seen so far on Stephen Colbert's blistering satire at the White House Correspondant's Dinner: A note about the Stephen Colbert monologue at the Correspondents' Dinner that Elisabeth Bumiller seems to have slept through face-down in her entree. No question the stint played better on TV than it did in the room with C-SPAN cutting to gowned lovelies in the audience with glaceed expressions and tuxedo'd men making with the nervous eyes, but to say he "bombed" or "stunk up the place" (Jonah Goldberg's usual elegance) is wishful thinking on behalf of the wishful thinkers on the right, who have nothing but wishful thinking to prop them up during the day.... ..... Instead, Colbert was cool, methodical, and mercilessly ironic, not getting rattled when the audience quieted with discomfort (and resorting to self-deprecating "savers," as most comedians do), but closing in on the kill, as unsparing of the press as he was of the president. I mean no disrespect to Jon Stewart to say that in the same circumstances, he would have resorted to shtick; Colbert didn't. Apart from flubbing the water-half-empty joke about Bush's poll ratings, he was in full command of his tone, comic inflection, and line of attack. The we-are-not-amused smile Laura Bush gave him when he left the podium was a priceless tribute to the displeasure he incurred. To me, Colbert looked very relaxed after the Bushes left the room and he greeted audience members, signed autographs. And why wouldn't he be? He achieved exactly what he wanted to achieve, delivered the message he intended to deliver. Mission accomplished. Not much else to say, really. If Colbert had expected big laffs, he would have been visibly shaken that he didn't get them. Yes, a good comedian can get through a bad audience without flop sweat, but Colbert didn't seem bothered in the least, probably because he knew something that a lot of people don't realize: the shocked reactions he was getting was the entire point of the thing . Stephen Colbert didn't need to make those people laugh. He has nothing to prove as a comedian, or as a satirist. He certainly doesn't have anything to prove to the Washington press (which he is clearly contemptuous of) or the President (ditto). He didn't need to, and he didn't try. Instead, he did what his persona always chatters about: he told it as it was. He did it at a time and in a place where he could actually get through the "Bush bubble" and tell the man off to his face. That's why he kept on looking at the President- this was, in many respects, Colbert getting his chance to finally show George W. Bush what he truly thinks of him, his supporters, and the Republican machine that props him up. As Wolcott said: "Mission accomplished". buy cilais cheap viagra Generic Viagra buy cheap cialis
