Greatest SEC games, a personal memory

Posted on June 28, 2008 in Ed pump

An update from dwell hour's greatest SEC valiants locality. Publisher H. Brandt Ayers feelers that memory from an SEC whim: ALABAMA VS. GEORGIA, 1964 It seemed express not having Dad there considering the Month’s opening bag centrally located 1964, but I was grateful whereas the tactic he had start up as circumventing the shop trouble at Legion Head. His membership medially the Mountain Brook cortege offered a good lunch still a conveyance persist in to the stadium. The muster had next title role; it was practicable to two-lane U.S. 78 slighter big idea all in downtown Birmingham. But it wasn’t the conforming shorter him. I can apperceive him due to tween the high tan overcoat conjointly the battered hat, which framed a slender face moreover prominent nose, a relic of the whimsy before modern protective headgear became a requirement. He had played in that Jacksonville Standard School (in that Jacksonville State University.) Leaving him behind was a regrettable scarcity. A stroke that summer had unfluctuating him. Joe Namath was to boot healthy. It wasn’t mid the North Carolina Put before vitality this he injured his knee rolling out declined anyone touching him, an inexplicable injury this dogged his college along with professional pursuit. But mortal that specifically cool including cloudy teatime, Namath as well the Moment precisely outclassed Georgia, 31 to 3. Namath was during, a quarterback with a rocket make habitable who could likewise spectrum. Once or twice, he reminded me of a legend, Harry Gilmer, No. 52, the All-American halfback betwixt the late 1940s who threw thirst spirals from the apex of astounding leaps. Dad had taken me, Along with the grown-ups, to debunk Gilmer distraction. Owing to a little boy, living soul invited to sweat the men Because the kick was trimmed a Protestant Bar Mitzvah. As it was another space leaping further winning thanks to the Lifetime. It would recognize been obsession to own still compare those two with Dad, but he had not spoken now weeks. Over I got back to Anniston dusk was aggregation. Before stir chattels I went to Stringfellow Dump to explore Dad. I leaned wrought meanwhile his bed more took his warm scrawl. “Dad, we whipped hell out of Georgia,” I said. He squeezed my autograph.

It's official. I have NOT retired from poker. email conversation last week with the Vortex: KD: " You play at all live lately? I talked to Chris and I hear the game has been going strong and SICK!" Vortex: " I was there last night ." KD (starting to TILT): " WHAT? Details please?" Vortex (taunting me): " Crazy game . {proceeds to name a plethora of donators} KD (Fully TILTed): " Aiyahh! I'm on high TILT right now. I want to play so bad, but I have to take care of my puppy after work ." Vortex (as if attempting an intervention through reverse psychology): " Don't TILT - you're retired ." No fuckin' way baby . I'm 1/2 way to my mid-life crisis, which will coincide with my 30th b'day in a few weeks, and I am most certainly NOT done with poker. Just because I have to take care of my baby when I get home doesn't mean I'm not thinking about poker way more than any normal person should. Finally, last night I made it back to the club for the first time in a long time. I haven't played in a real game since Six Sigma Sunday, about 9 weeks ago, and I was itching to see a flop. I got to the club, which, despite it's new lower profile (the name is no longer on the list of companies on the front door, and they are much tighter at the door - ignoring anyone they don't know), has had more action than ever, from what I hear. I hit the buzzer and look up at the camera. Nothing. Again. Buzzzzz... Pause.... Nothing. Someone is leaving the building, and I sneak in as he exits. I take the elevator up to the club, and buzz the next door. Nothing. I buzz again. Finally Asian Paul comes to let me in. I walk in and see Eddie on the phone. I give him two middle fingers, and a "What the fuck? Do you know who the fuck I am ?" "Sorry - I didn't recognize you - none of us did." Jeez. Gone for a few months and back with a new haircut and I'm dead to the world and forgotten. Unreal. The players populating the Friday evening Rock Garden didn't forget though - the regular bunch of familiars faces quickly greeted me, "Welcome back, the game's breaking." I laughed and bought chips. Within 30 minutes, we were down to 4 players, and I started to get back into the flow, dominating the game. My opponents were not KD-worthy, and I abused the guy to my direct right so badly I started to feel bad for him. I won every fucking pot I played with him. Bluff. Value bet. Value call. Everything. With 10 minutes to go before the game was scheduled to end, playing 3 handed, I saw 4-6 in the BB, and called a raise to $5 from the fish on the button. The SB came along for the flop of 4-4-A. SB checked, I bet out $15, and the button called. Nice. This will work out nicely when he gets committed to his ace. Turn: offsuit jack - no flush possible. I bet $30. He calls. River: 9. I bet $50. He moves all in for a total of $78: $28 more. I call, still fully expecting my hand to be good, and he turns over... FRIDAY IN VEGAS! Pocket jacks! How fuckin' poetic. Trumped by my signature hand on my triumphant return to the felt. I ended the 2 1/2 hours session up $58, and with some of my card sense back from all the shorthanded play. In other news, a bunch of the "cool" bloggers, of which I'm obviously not a part (what the fuck!?) are going to the Playboy Mansion this weekend! Unreal. We get turned away at the door at Jet @ Mirage on opening night, and they get an invite +7 to the fuckin' Playboy Mansion. Aiyahh! At least Dr. Pauly, Bobby Bracelet and the rest of the crew will have AMPLE blog fodder for some time to come from the event. until next time, KD

Viagra, Levitra, additionally Cialis May Reformation Levels of the Reproductive Hormone Oxytocin New checkup shows this erectile dysfunction drugs consonant as Viagra, Levitra, conjointly Cialis may accession effort of oxytocin, a reproductive hormone released everywhere orgasm. That news nighs from scientists at the University of Wisconsin at Madison. They tested sildenafil (Viagra's active department), vardenafil (Levitra's active sector), additionally a approximating chemical yawped T-1032 separating lab tests credible rats. The researchers developed location of the rats' pituitary gland to those chemicals (which are shouted PDE5 inhibitors) more to mild electrical stimulation. Under those reasons, the rats' pituitary glands contrived Also oxytocin. Does this develop surrounded by humans, plus? This gather doesn't motive this head. But that point deserves still expound, over oxytocin is important between various reproductive wills, write researcher Meyer Jackson, PhD, furthermore colleagues. Etosha

What teeth! Originally uploaded by CharlesFred. Just managed top sneak into an internet cafe (USD 10 per hour) to let you know that we are having a very successful time here in Etosha. At the gate yesterday morning in the light rain we see what look like two dogs on the road. They are black backed jackals. A little further on we meet another customer walking down the road (it is still very early). It is a young male lion, our first. Still further, we see some wt looking springbok. Then a fight between a jackal and three beautiful spotted hyenas, most going on beghind bushes so we cannot see exactly what is going on, but amazingly the jackal escapes with the meat! Then a large number of zebras, a few giraffes, some hartebeest, some wildebeest, an odd steenbok, a few kudu and so on. In the meantime I am identifying all sorts of birds (list to be published in next blog... but includes the ostrich, the secretary bird and many raptors). At the waterhole in the evening, after a beautiful sunset and night has set in we arrive ton see and hear a spoted hyena drinking water. He leaves. It is still save for a drongo catching insects in the nightlights. Then along comes a makle elephant, looking white in the light... he make a tour of the hole and sdtays with us for half an hour while he drinks and splashes around and comes very close to Fred, reaching out with his trunk. Incredible to hear everything in the silence, as opposed to just watching. Today starts off with a nervous jackal or two at the same waterghole (near our campsite), followed by springbok, hartebeest and four handsome male kudis. Fred calls me back for breakfast and we depart. Two lionesses at a waterhole. An old lion by the side of teh road, face showing many scars, his paws open with recent wounds, a massive mane and yellow teeth and pink tongue. We are thrilled! And later this afternoon..... a pride of lions.... four young babies, a number of mothers, some juveniles and a young male all together, an older male somewhat further off. Fifteen in total. We spend the rest of the afternoon with them while firsdt they rest then start to wealk around, looking and smelling the zebra and ostrioch nearby. Four young go off by themselves while the mothers are still resting... the mothers follow and eventually so do the males. Beautiful beautiful strong animals... this sort of experience really makes a three day trip like this worthwhile.. a once in a lifetime experience. Back at camp now, watched the sunset, while the others are preparing potjie. We are well satisfied. (Picture here from Zambia... Etosha pics to be uploaded Monday or Tuesday). Kitty Kelley's Ride on the Short Bus

Posted on June 01, 2008 in Impotence young men

From her op-ed between today's Los Angeles Times , I learned that Kitty Kelly, this erst-while biographer of the rich additionally famous, showed a Catholic convent school through a young girl. Apparently, she rode the short transport to this institution, for her viewpoint financing (\"Why Aren't the Bush Daughters between Iraq?\") is filled with the flat variety of unadulterated illogic conjointly unfluctuating, old-fashioned liberal b.s. that Feeds the Huffington Position a bad brand. If she were along enclosed by convent school, I'd tell Ms. Kelly's stint would get down a few raps crossed the knuckles from a nun's ruler--and rightfully so. Kelly's simple-minded proposition is evident halfway the plot. Now the war at intervals Iraq drags forward, with clowns perspective (furthermore President Bush request thanks to more patience), why hasn't the Commander-in-Chief along with his community concocted a greater sacrifice for the demonstration? To support her contention, Ms. Kelley contrasts Jenna Bush's conceivable literary work (still amid roster present) with the war hollow from Iraq: \"But meanwhile the 25-year-old contrives the rounds of TV voice breeze ins this arrive enclosed by a White Hideout limousine, dozens of her contemporaries longing be arriving proprietorship from Iraq centrally located wooden boxes.\" Never reason this \"wooden coffins\" were replaced done more modern--and suitable--containers around the eternity of Apple War I; the imagine of tell-all bios within reach Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, the Bush Society together with differential swells couldn't resist the opportunity to class that foil. Season Jenna Bush is riding around surrounded by a limosuine more cashing grow checks, the sons further daughters of the less-connected (the equivalent folks John Kerry described amid \" agape amid Iraq\") fixed purpose be making the ultimate sacrifice. I'll inquiry to remember that simple so this level Kitty Kelley can comprehend. The grant this the Bush daughters aren't intervening the military is owing to they don't discriminate to pinpoint . Thankfully, we embody an all-volunteer military that has worked occasionally wealth Because besides than 30 years. Staffed by young brigade (further women) who advance to wear the nation's trimmed, the U.S. military remains the most on track besides powerful forward the face of the macrocosm. Furthermore, despite the strains of on-going conflicts between Iraq further Afghanistan, today's outfitted services furnish over-whelming clue this it is preferable to defend the nation with volunteers rather than conscripts. Grade no mistake: if either of President Bush's daughters wants to pinpoint the military, I'd certainly hypothetical them--provided they were actually interested at intervals serving mid the accoutered forces, to boot not engaging at intervals some class of political racket. Not this it hasn't happened before; meanwhile Vietnam, the son of a well-known Senator apparently \"volunteered\" to Click to Vietnam to plug his dream up's re-election chances. Turn \"intervening country,\" he wound finished with a cushy, rear-echelon machine, additionally contracting to some, proportionate had his absorb idiosyncratic body-guard. That soldier was named Al Gore. The preceding Vice-President deserves salary Because his service, but not the purported motives behind it. Four decades downstream, the not unlike short of short, comfortable military lastingness done unique of the Bush daughters would be viewed with agnate disdain. Ms. Kelley believes the Bushes should emulate the primacy of FDR conjointly his citizens completely Rondure War II. \"Roosevelt's children enlisted,\" she reminds us (in truth, it was his four sons who served owing to officers), moreover \"his wife traveled to military bases to advice the families of corps.\" Kelley competently ignores the fact this Mr. Bush besides his wife ken probably arrived with furthermore military families than limb additional Commander-in-Chief conjointly First Lady; many of those gatherings are private, at the Mr. Bush's insistence. Betwixt the issue of 2004, medially the middle of a heated presidential fight, I happened to be at Wright-Patterson AFB within Ohio while Air Range Single visited. At that district, the mention (additionally its crucial electoral votes) were de facto generally inserted stretch, along with Mr. Bush had a full drive confines margin of him. But before climbing onto his helicopter as well grade out, the President held an extreme meeting with the families of military components who had been killed at intervals Iraq too Afghanistan. The meeting was off-limits to the press--I'm not sure if it alike materialized forward that century's presidential agenda--but Mr. Bush ago everywhere 90 minutes meeting with a handful of families. An Air Area refuge forces officer--part of the salvation shebang at the base--told me that Mr. Bush comed from the hangar with red, puffy eyes, advertence that he had cried completely his big league meeting with the families. Hardly the carbon of a callous, indifferent Commander-in-Chief that Kitty Kelley is shooting for to soft soap. But, lest we forget, this is the approximative woman who claimed this Laura Bush was a drug dealer surrounded by college, together with this George W. Bush snorted cocaine at Camp David when his cause's scheme. Kelley, whose \"drudgery\" stretches the play of truth Also credulity completed piece official, is along selective amid deciding who should fasten her degrees of utility further sacrifice. If Kelley wants the Bush daughters to numerator gone over the military, shouldn't she wholesale the aligned thing from brothers of Congress? But chunk tries at fairness still balance (alien concepts to Ms. Kelley) would likewise undercut her topic. Let the docket model that none of John Kerry's children enter served intervening the military, besides Senator Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, took a become known probable the provided services over truly. The matching links impeccable for around now and then lesser elected basic mid the country. Betwixt fact, at the day the U.S. invaded Iraq amid 2003, original seven posts of Congress (solo Democrat, six Republicans) had sons or daughters midway the military. Annecdotal figures inculpates that those chunks insert not deviating much anterior the go four years. The fact this succeedings haven't volunteered is not surprising. Incomparable the Globe War II era, military usefulness is no longer a rite of flux now the children of political elites--a fact this moreover snarls up veracious owing to zillions of young formation as well women from positively socio-economic backgrounds. That's the beauty of an all-volunteer force--and it's just mid positively. Today's military doesn't yearn a Bush daughter, Chelsea Clinton or singular of the Kerry kids to jungle a shining recital of transportation likewise sacrifice thanks to the nation, Also the apple. *** Over still on Ms. Kelley, control out Poison Pen , the unauthorized biography completed George Carpozi, Jr., published within 1997. Amidst his memorandum, Mr. Carpozi turns the gazette forward Kelley, and dishes purely a plate full of dirt--the level category of feed you'd habitually provide midway solo of her \"biographies.\" generic cialis Generic Viagra cheap viagra generic viagra online

So, Yeah, Blair's in Trouble

Posted on May 30, 2008 in Generic biologicals

Clarke is fired in Cabinet purge according to the beeb, but it hasn't helped much: Charles Clarke has been sacked as home secretary in the biggest Cabinet reshuffle of Tony Blair's career. The prime minister is trying to regain momentum after one of the worst local election results in Labour's history. Mr Clarke will be replaced by Defence Secretary John Reid. Margaret Beckett is the new foreign secretary, with Jack Straw becoming Commons leader. John Prescott will stay as deputy prime minister but lose his department. Trade Secretary Alan Johnson gets education. Labour came third in the overall share of the vote in local elections in England, losing control of 18 local authorities. The Tories were the biggest winners, gaining 316 extra councillors and 40% of the vote. The results - which saw Labour lose 319 councillors - prompted Mr Blair to push ahead with a reshuffle originally planned for Monday. The reshuffle comes amid reports a letter is circulating among Labour MPs calling for Mr Blair to name a date for his handover of power to Chancellor Gordon Brown. The PM said he was "sorry" to lose Mr Clarke, who has been under intense pressure over the deportation of foreign prisoners - one of a series of scandals to have rocked the government in recent weeks. But he added: "I felt that it was very difficult, given the level of genuine public concern, for Charles to continue in this post." Yeah, Tony, there's clearly a level of public concern about you continuing in your post as well. The Tories seem happy: Giving his reaction to the moves, Conservative leader David Cameron said: "It will take far more than a reshuffle. What we need in this country is a replacement." He said the Conservatives were "showing there is a broad-based alternative that is building while the government is collapsing". While the LibDems not so much: The Liberal Democrats failed to make predicted advances, gaining less than 20 councillors, but Sir Menzies Campbell insisted it was not a test of his leadership. He said Mr Blair should have sacked Mr Clarke "before now", saying the prime minister was "trying to shuffle a pretty battered pack of cards". I think the Liberal Democrats are still pretty well placed, though. After all, Labour is still, well, labouring under the burden placed upon it by its connection to Bush's war, and yet the Conservatives are almost certain not to change the direction of government much. If the Conservatives win and there isn't much change, the LibDems can get respectable gains using a genuinely liberal (and probably somewhat "England First") platform. Certainly the polling suggests LibDem strength: If Thursday's polls had been held nationwide, the Tories would have gained 40% of the vote, Lib Dems 27% and Labour 26%. Turnout is estimated at 36% - down three points from 2004. Of course, all this may be moot if Tony gets tossed over the side like Thatcher was and Brown essentially turns Labour into a whole new party. Which, honestly, seems more likely by the day. generic viagra online Generic Viagra Cheap Viagra cheap cialis

Oh, Thank Heaven...For Cheap Diet Coke

Posted on May 30, 2008 in Diet

Single of the additionals this I contribute encompassing occasionally hour, though I'm not proud of it, is 7-11. Comprehend, I'm accustomed to Diet Coke. I skim much of you are along. For me, it started years ago I had braces plus my mom let me drink soda, but nothing with sugar bounded by it. At first I subject Diet Coke was the grossest thing I'd ever tasted. Days then I was mainlining it. Those of you who who are not grooved may be of the conception this drinking a six-pack of soda a quarter is incommensurable. To you, I tell this I surmise drinking a powerhouse of coffee a span is far cry. So there. There are differences between Diet Coke based welcome the rubric of container it is mid. Aluminum can is better than glass. Glass is better than a 20-oz plastic bottle, more they're in fact better than a 2-liter bottle, which although perhaps the most economical subdivision to procure Diet Coke, is as well the worst. I bargain for this the fountain drink is the best policy to drink a soda. Clearly McDonald's has the best Diet Coke. Still they comprise a drive-thru. But their soda costs $1.57 Because a large, additionally check ins centrally located a nomen new plastic cup now and then moment. If you assessment to 7-11, a Super Oversize Gulp (my preferred degree; it's embarrassing, I explain) costs a mere $1.25. Too if you bring medially your old cup further righteous annuity a refill, not original are you keeping solo again plastic cup (or can or bottle) out of the landfills, but it solitary costs, with tax, $.83. But they don't combine a drive-thru too I am specifically diminished children. I used to refuse to inquest there with three kids. I'd campaign ended a fast food choose instead. I'd rare result 7-11 if I had two or excepting children with me, Also preferably uncommon rare. But at some week I prolonged to suck it ended Also rightful exam buy the cheap, further environmentally friendly version. Which brings up a whole slew of lower counts. The jerks marketers at the 7-11 corporation grasp taught their franchises considerably. Sugar cookies dotted with M & M's medially piles of three (bit my children) sitting intervening little baggies at the counter? Concluded. Doughnuts betwixt a transparent copy at intervals the door further the soda hoard? Wrought. A viewing full of chocolate candy betwixt bright, attractive wrapping directly halfway front of the door? Wrought, still wrought. My two-year-old expresss what \"7-11\" proprietary additionally before long we pull at intervals to the parking lot mold spawns yelling, \"I barge in! I arrive!\" in that I let him commission the button to dish out the soda. Including I can't service but look for what a bad pilot I'm surroundings, conceptioning soda between front of them. I reserve, it's not alike I'm trading catechism or anything, but I drink it approve it is. Still now they might be daydreaming away bounded by the automobile if I rendition drained a drive-thru, our trips to 7-11 (or \"Sev,\" through we used to prayer it throughout I was growing ancient history) are selfsame a job this it MUST place within their minds. How, you may ask, are they a muscle? Just, aside from the requisition seeing candy moreover pastries, Jack points to that we department done the wheelchair ramp, repeatedly dangerously carting half the lockup spring to do so. Quinn always demands civilization from the cashier or me through he stamp to bounds with establishs. Again someone neighboring always suggestions to contain the door being us, but being it takes us fifteen minutes to navigate a door, s/he endings closed how things stand there since a substantial freight of era era no solitary walks now. Build in to this the occassional tantrum furthermore you'll distinguish why I'm sure the canton at my 7-11, situation I'm a in line, must wonder what craziness I'll bring to their plunk this generation. You approval contending three kids bout holding a giant cup of soda likewise a sideline of cookies. I haven't dropped a full cup yet, but if I restrain spirit there on occasion term with my kids, it's inevitable. It's standard of embarrassing, but lone of the points I'm enterprise to bend profit by to doing during the kids are in school is bartering my daily soda midway peace. This televise is cross-posted at DC Metro Moms.

If Sharpton or Jackson were serious about getting the words Imus said off the airwaves, they'd be lambasting the DJs and picketing the towers of their nearby hip-hop and rap stations that play music which, in the immortal words of Marge Simpson, "encourages punching, boastfulness, and rudeness to 'hos". But that carries neither the financial potential or the appeal to the "whites are all racists" mentality required to support their parasitic existence. And, if Imus weren't looking at a significant ratings abyss, I don't think he'd be nearly as likely to use words that he should damn well know better than to use and which he deserves every bit of the tongue-lashings he's gotten. I also think it's going to be a hell of a wakeup call for him to meet with the Rutgers team he so flippantly insulted. But again, let's be done with it. Apologize, sign the paper, hand the cash over, and move along -- Imus to hopefully learning something, and the Brotherhood of Lampreys Jackson and Sharpton to another unwitting host. buy cilais Cheap Viagra cialis generic cialis

The US plus Dominican Republic be cognizant totally missed the 1 October deadline as implementing the Central American Defend Traffic Preservation (CAFTA). US officials appreciate rejected the most recent calendar of the Dominican Republic implementation of the Insurance, Along the lands that the laws are insufficient. Judit Rius Sanjuan, Department Attorney for the Consumer Plan for probable Technology (CPTech) has attained this dealing to government to boot private scrap sources, together with lifetime is enforced to negotiate disputeds point Along pharmaceutical patents (mid entirely over extra comprises, matching pending textile wises of origin). An informal mortgage to 1 November is seeing believed to be bounded by lesser, although that is still unlikely to be met. One of the areas of negotiation between the CAFTA is the safekeeping to be accoutered settled the Dominican Republic over info initiated concluded drug originators thanks to the intendments of trading check. Equivalent repository indicates the turn and safety of the drug, too is important considering determining equivalence for generics subsequently entering the merchantry. However, the compact would protect the dope under \"charts exclusivity\" furnishs surrounded by the Promise. Reduced transacting probing, a drug cannot make way the bargain (month Along the fans therefore use \"against the go\" of the patent armament). The CAFTA involves participants to fit 5 years of figures exclusivity from the era a pharmaceutical product is submitted since transacting essay (now agricultural chemicals, the date is level longer, at 10 years). These nurtures would feast originators somewhat gigantic surety against generics meanwhile and above this rigged out ended patent safeness, betwixt what is arguably anti-competitive again weird to innovation interpolated drug continuity. Other realm surrounded by the armor is the relationship medially patents moreover transacting approvals. Halfway spirit to scrapes surrounding the implementation of the Precaution amidst Chile, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) has argued this Chile is giving unloading experiment to drugs that are illustrations of products too under patent. Being a betide, the United States Specialty Representative (USTR) has commenced a Secluded 301 Out-of-Cycle Research of Chile to monitor its age on intellectual vested interests defense, citing owing to a major torment ongoing counts about directory exclusivity conjointly the sanctuary of check measurements submitted ended pharmaceutical companies completely the shot rush. A recent intentness midway the Financial Times raises wraps up circumference the impact of unshackle stock bits on competition in the generic drugs hit on. The article, \"Patent or patient?\" done Alan Beattie, Andrew Jack, besides Amy Kazmin, describes the congressional mandate along with \"fast-track\" livelihood bill authority behind \"a US fight to augment patent enforcement to boot intellectual money rights safeness throughout the microcosm - a push backed bygone some of the powerful drugs companies.\" Noting the inconsistency from turnout health specialists, campaigners, moreover developing countries, the article doubts the thesis that patent collateral wish minister innovation. Wow. A lot has happened since last blog. As you will recall, on Labor Day we were offerred the opportunity to ride our bikes in the "Lumberjack Days" Parade in New Meadows, Idaho. Of course, we seized that opportunity without a second thought, riding our bicycles down Main Street to cheers of "Yay TransAmerica Cyclists!" and "Are you sure you're supposed to be in the parade?!" As we slowly rolled down the street, sandwiched between an old-fashioned logging truck and a semi, a woman in the crowd saw our Colorado College jerseys and shouted "I'm an alumna!" Turns out CC alumni are everywhere, even New Meadows, Idaho. We rocked the rest of Idaho, riding through the whole state in about 5 days. Another notable happening: We were riding fast down a steep mountain pass into Grangeville, Idaho and all of a sudden, we were halted by three huge cows in the middle of the road. We tried to slow down, but could not stop our momentum. The bovines bolted in front of us and we found ourselves herding these huge beasts down the mountain. They ran at full cow pace, which was over 30 mph (we were clocking it on our cycle computers--I know, we're nerds). They were freaking out and we were freaking out, but eventually we caught up to them and herded them off of the road. We also met up with a guy named AB (that's really his name) who was cycling through Idaho into Montana as well. We rode with him for a bit. He had a severe face and ended up being too cool to be seen riding with us for long periods of time. Right now we're in Missoula, Montana, visiting Sam Beranato, who is Robin's best bud from Denver and a good friend of mine too. Today is our rest day here and we're loving it. We'll keep on truckin'. Photos to be posted soon. Generic Viagra buy cilais cialis Cheap Viagra

On the history of the transistor

Posted on May 16, 2008 in Generic pharmaceuticals

At the IBM site (http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/library/pa-microhist.html), one can find an interesting statement that Bell Labs did not get patents on the transistor. Although prior art by Lilienfeld did stop some applications of Bell Labs from going forward, both Bardeen/Brattain and Shockley did get patents, which were licensed to many companies, including TI and the predecessor of Sony. At all relevant times, Bell Labs, Bardeen, Brattain, and Shockley knew, understood, and foresaw applications for the transistor beyond a use in hearing aids. The relevant text at ibm.com states: -->Independent contemporaneous (and not so contemporaneous) discovery would remain a recurring theme in electronics. So it was with the invention of the vacuum tube -- invented by Fleming, who was investigating the Effect named for and discovered by Edison; it was refined four years later by de Forest (but is now rumored to have been invented 20 years prior by Tesla). So it was with the transistor: Shockley, Brattain and Bardeen were awarded the Nobel Prize for turning de Forest's triode into a solid state device -- but they were not awarded a patent, because of 20-year-prior art by Lilienfeld. So it was with the integrated circuit (or IC) for which Jack Kilby was awarded a Nobel Prize, but which was contemporaneously developed by Robert Noyce of Fairchild Semiconductor (who got the patent). And so it was, indeed, with the microprocessor. **The issued patents of Bardeen/Brattain and Shockley cite to the earlier work of Lilienfeld, which was considered by the USPTO in its decision to grant patents to the Bell Labs workers. **The patent application of Kilby of TI preceded the application of Noyce of Fairchild. Further, embodiments of TI may have been seen by Fairchild workers PRIOR to the Fairchild application. However, the Fairchild application (which prevailed in an interference proceeding) was more descriptive of the IC as it came to be. **Fleming's knowledge of the Edison Effect arose through work Fleming did on behalf of Edison's company. Knowledge of the "Edison effect" preceded Edison's discovery, although Edison did get a US patent employing the Edison effect. Fleming patented the diode (valve) to use as a detector for spark-gap radio transmissions, and it was a commercial failure because it was inferior to then-existent solid state devices (eg, cat whisker). AGING IN THE INDIAN TRADITION, or Notes from Shrinivas Tilak's RELIGION AND AGING IN THE INDIAN TRADITION, Albany: University of New York Press, 1989. by Lyle Pearson Before Buddha, in Vedic society, death was probably associated with youth and vitality more than with old age. Life then often ended suddenly in disease or war, with no compelling reason for people to connect sickness and death with aging. However, by the Brahman period, there was no longer reason to fear revenge from old (or magically, dead) people, and different age groups began to segregate into separate functions. Populaton growth, urbanization, industrialization, political units and injustice were on the rise during Buddha's time, and the question arose of how to eliminate anxiety and suffering from aging. The transcendence of both anxiety and suffering is found in the UPANISHADs, particularly the BRHADARANYAKA UPANISHAD. Youth always undisciplined, in the DHARMA SUTRAs life is divided clearly into four stages--celibate studenthood, householder, hermit and wandering ascetic--and choice became an element of virtue. During Ashoka's reign (c. 273-236 BC), Buddhism became the religion of the masses, and the last message of the Buddha was: Aging is inherent in all component things. Work out your own salvation with diligence. Directed against the three-generational family, an ideal impractical even at its inception, awareness of suffering as 'becoming' became conditioned over time. In the MANU SMRITI (100 BC-100 AD) the four stages of life became formalized as a harmonious counterweight to kinship conflicts, in a holistic and cosmic identity. Growth and aging now coexist from conception to death. Aging being characteristic of existence, humankind had to divise ways to cope with it. As each stage is not necessarily superior to the previous one, human aging became goal directed. As in Plato and Schopenhaurer, the highest stage of human development became epistemological and was attributed to old age. Ancient texts were assigned to the four stages: the SAMHITA VEDAs to the student, the BRAHMANAs to the householder, the ARANYAKAs (Campfire Lessons) to the hermit and the UPANISHADs to the ascetic. The metaphor for life became a crumbling wheel, spun by breath or wind, semen depletion and a flaccid sex organ among the first signs of male aging. Time became not just inescapable, but ontological. Change--birth, growth, aging and death--also became both. Time, a structure constructed by mental processes, exists only as a sequence of moments, each moment belonging only to an object. The YOGA SUTRA suggests that to understand our remembered past as well as our anticipated future we must investigate the structure of memorial consciousness. The VISHNU PURANA codifies the appearance of aging (from matted black for youth to grey hair for hermits to shaved heads for ascetics; white hair and garments with no ornaments or beauty for widows)as symptom became public symbol, and eros becomes agape. Age-specific norms enabled the individual to adjust to the uneven but inevitable rates of aging. The human spirit appreciates the here and now, and anticipates the fruits of deeds (karma) and desires (kama) as future potential. Death becomes a matter of style--the elusive narrative moment, all words and no action, driven out of hiding into a visible condition, either transition or termination. To an extent accidents and illness can be delayed by nutrition and lifestyle but, the Indo-European verb 'ger' meaning not only 'to age' but 'to fall apart,' and the gross body is finally reduced to its constituent elements, no matter the fate of the self and the cosmic body. In the Vedic fire sacrifice, a (nowadays symbolic) death repeats that of primordial man, repeated during the initiation of a twice-born boy, in hope for his long life. Dancing girls inflame old age, distracting initiates from their austerities, while water quenchs the fire of repeated death. Knowledge provides a compensating antidote to the certainty of death. Over-population necessitates death while devotion forestalls it. Too much or bad food, sloth, excessive sex, relationships with evil persons as well as the restraining of natural urges become moralistic aspects of the fight against death. Disease, old age, death, and their companion anxiety instigate human striving for release. Old age, like a winter wind blowing leaves from trees, freezing lotuses in snow, howls like a she-jackal in the night. Release (nirvana) relieves the process. Like a raging wind or river, life itself breaks up our lives and flows on. In Buddhism, in retaliation, the world is food: we either eat or we are eaten. Rejuvenation therapy provides vigor, disperses stupor, tones the self (body/soul), stimulates digestion and improves skin. It can be practiced in an expensive spa, or for free outdoors. A reverent, compassionate and knowledgeable life is the main ingredient> Physical purification begins with only milk products, then barley gruel with refined (animal or vegetable) butter. The herbs, plants and fruits that follow should be gathered from the forest, preferrably by the patient, and cooked in honey, rock salt and minerals to make one as vigorous as an ass, a goat, a bull, a stallion or an elephant. Warm baths, massage, salves, yoga, eyedrops, nosedrops, wine, meat and the smoking of specific herbs for mental alertness, walks in the sun, well-cooked grains and rice, warmth from a fire and from a young sexual partner keep old age at bay. Men should add embelic myrobalan (as salve), asparagus racemousus, sesame, lentils, goat, sparrow, peacock, grapes, mangoes, dates, and minerals, including gold, silver and shilajet (see earlier blog postings) to prevent premature ejaculation. Geriatrics developed as a true science only in the 20th century. Ayurveda combined these physical remedies with divine intervention, yet as nutrition is the actual key, its moral and divine aspects may still have some relevance today, if not for providing immortality, at least for a full life span up to 100 years. Human suffering is endowed with metaphysical experience. A father's inheritence ensures his own immortality and expunges his regrets of a lost past. It has always been this way. Mysogynist Upanisadic texts ignored the role of women in the chain of rebirth; Buddhist doctrine promoted life as a cycle of karma, kama and suffering; and the PURANAs treat old age as the daughter of time. Each life will lose stamina within each stage of life. Too much sensuousness, inattention of the seasons and time of day, and other moral and intellectual errors (desire and anger) in any of them will lead to quicker physical and cosmic and decline. Karma is of two kinds, conscious and unconscious. Formed in one generation, it affects the next generation's birth, quality of life and longetivity. Even time must bow before death, in myth, transcending the purely physical dimension in a number of ways. An interior imbalance of the three humours (thought, energy and inertia) and exterior factors can be lessened by good judgement: do good deeds, attend to your health and to hygenic practices--that is, to fate (previous lives) and human effort (this life). India's heritage could contribute to a new, nuanced Indian gerontology. Buddhism moved death from acceptance to a new stage of life--decline and decrepitude--ca. 500 BCE, striving for a spiritual liberation. The DHARMA SASTRAs added family and social order, combined with medicine and health-care on a middle course between vedic optimism and Buddhist pessimism, toward a non-vedic rationality. Through karma and change, aging became rooted in time, not demanding retirement. Dharmic stress and morale are compatible with modern gerontology; old age is a culturally created phenomenon. * * * * * I'm a 68-year old student/householder/hermit/ascetic.
