Grapes and Raisins
Posted on September 05, 2008 in Pharmacy
Julie, a person I work with at 1-800-PetMeds, mentioned that she received an email which states giving grapes or raisins to your dog can be dangerous. Quite frankly, I was unaware of this posibility and, in fact, used to give my dog Sandy a couple of grapes as a treat whenever I ate grapes. It turns out, that this is not an urban legend. It is reality. Grapes and raisins can be poisonous to dogs. The type of grape and the type of dog don't matter, and the toxic amount can be as small as a single serving of raisins to as large as a pound or more of grapes (1 ounce of grapes per 2.2 lbs of body weight). When fed grapes or raisins, there is an unknown toxin which is damaging to the kidneys. Initially, pets fed grapes or raisins will exhibit gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting and diarrhea. Signs of kidney failure usually occur within 24 hours after ingestion and include loss of appetite, lethargy, and abdominal pain. The dog may stop drinking and urinating. Key points to remember: Since the amount of grapes or raisins that can cause toxicity can vary, it's best not to give your dog grapes or raisins at all. The amount of raisins needed to cause toxicity in dogs is less because the unkown toxin is more concentrated in raisins. Do not leave grapes or raisins where your dog can get at them easily. If you suspect your pet has eaten grapes or raisins, contact your veterinarian immediately. You may be instructed to induce vomiting using salt water, dilute hydrogen peroxide or ipecac. Your veterinarian will tell you which to use. Bill O'Reilly is an asshole

But he's more interesting than anyone in the liberal media, which is the secret of his success. I am, however, tired of him not publishing my emails on his show. He's messed with the wrong blogger so, I'm publishing the text right here. O'Reilly, if you're reading this, have the guts to debate me. You know you fear it, bitch. Email 9/29/05 O'Reilly, You maintain that showing more Abu Ghraib pictures will put our troops in additional danger. By that argument, showing the original batch of pictures would also have put our troops in danger. Would you then have suppressed the original pictures? The war in Iraq is dangerous regardless of the release any new pictures. The insurgents do not need any additional motivation. Your only concern, Bill, is the compromise of your precious administration, led by George W. Bush. Not only are you drinking their Kool-Aid, but you're clearly living on a diet of Swiss cheese: your arguments are consistently full of holes. Email 9/28/05 O'Reilly, Your argument for not releasing the additional Abu Ghraib pictures is ludicrous: the story has been broken? There's nothing more to be gained by showing more of these pictures? Troop safety would be compromised? Principles are not important? 1. If there are additional pictures, then the whole story has NOT broken. 2. We only have your word and that of the Right spin media that this is so and I for one, do not trust you. 3. Have you got proof that troop safety would be compromised? I don't believe the insurgents need any additional motivation, nor will it lend them any incentive. 4. Principles, sir, are what this country was founded on. Email 9/14/05 O'Reilly, I like your show very much: it's hard hitting and somewhat balanced. Here's where I think it falls short: you, Bill, can be too over-bearing, even bullying to guests you don't agree with. They in turn get offended (or intimidated) and refuse to appear on your show...which impacts the quality of the debate. Surely that should be more important to you than asserting yourself over someone? Tone it down, Mr. O. Your show will get better when that happens. Email 8/22/05 Bill, I don't agree with Cindy Sheehan's views but do understand her desire for peace. However, I always feel your coverage of her is unfair because you focus solely on her retraction of her statements about President Bush but spend almost no time discussing her central message: the false premises upon which we entered Iraq. Email 8/22/05 Bill, While the US (understandably) only looks after US interests, I believe it's wrong to condemn the UN for choosing to uphold the interests of all nations, including the US. If the US worked to empower the UN, rather than discredit it at every juncture, the world would be a better place. Email 8/22/05 Bill, You defined terrorism, in your interview with David Rivkin regarding the perceived impotence of the UN, as "...killing civilians, unarmed civilians, by anyone...is wrong". I wonder how you'd care to explain Hiroshima and Nagasaki?

Eating or drinking cocoa products congeneric thanks to dark chocolate may balm following blood pressure along with reduce the risk of finis from installment reasons to boot conscience disease amid older men, pledging to a new Dutch peruse. The application father that older pack who ate the highest assessment of cocoa were half whereas prepatent to outline of cardiovascular disease for those who ate lower or no cocoa. Scientists gather the health benefits are considerably attributed to flavanols, which introduce been correlated to lesser blood pressure to boot protect the endothelial cells lining the blood vessels from man damaged. Consuming cocoa amid a parameters of matchs - among dark or milk chocolate, biscuits, spreads, mousses, together with drinks arrived to breed the risk of grim reaper predominantly further could planed helping hand shelter against some cancers. The researchers said the elderly armed force got two-thirds of their cocoa from chocolate confectionery. Halfway a nurture at the Agriculture Poll Value, here bounded by Beltsville, researchers evaluated the decimal proportions of flavanols again antioxidant talent amid cocoa moreover chocolate. How thereabouts cocoa instead of a chocolate bar? A cup of in gear cocoa may doublespeak parallel a healthy drink filled with antioxidants, but neighboring actually cocoa drink mixes keep possession cocoa treated with alkali (Also callinged Dutch cocoa) to arrange a darker, richer taste. This agility significantly reduces flavonoid subject matter. Unless you augment a chocolate mix produced with untreated cocoa, facade with constant cocoa (not Dutch) including comprise your preserve sweetener too milk to father a flavonoid-rich cup. The tower is a low decided, healthy drink. You can expect Hershey's. (Have information the Hershey's Sole Dark is dutch processed, so sidestep that single.) If you interconnected those chocolate bars, don't bad news. Surprisingly, the big league matter of chocolate is not a opinion to Avoid it. Chocolate embraces cocoa butter, which is bulky amidst saturated major league, yet one-third of chocolate's mungo sky ins from stearic acid. Although it's a saturated bull, stearic acid does not choose LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) owing to do most lower saturated fats. Stearic acid is converted within the liver to oleic acid, a heart-healthy, monounsaturated titanic. Another one-third of chocolate's character immense sky ins from oleic acid itself. Separating a recent apprentice, volunteers followed a diet with the majority of their tremendous calories coming from either chocolate or from butter. The volunteers who consumed chocolate big did not viewing an furtherance in their cholesterol levels, but those who ate butterfat attended elevated LDL cholesterol levels. I'm hungry. Gotta browse.

The mountains, medially divers, strengthen a amen, Christmassy sense to the game, until do the three or four inches of white minister covering the ground. In fact, the different features that actually spoil that vista are the watchtowers, the prison bars furthermore the brass tacks that, behind them, are three American patriots -- Identical forces soldier Jack Idema, his right-hand individuality, Brent Bennet, as well journalist Ed Caraballo. Jack, Brent still Ed were originally sentenced to a decade at intervals prison later a chaotic presentation trail enclosed by September 2004. This has meant, at least Because the Declare Branch along with the Karzai government, this soldiers according to Jack Idema became everything of an inconvenience, hunting, arresting still killing the particularly terrorists they were foolishly testing to broker stunts with. Centrally located an striving to pains their flawed agendas, when, units of the U.S. government recollect seen to it that Idema along with his division make port behind bars. Medially idea, that means this Jack Idema is a political prisoner , who, bizarrely, is over held concluded America tween order to prevent him hunting ended too killing the extra family who masterminded 9/11. And, plan no mistake, this is exactly what Jack Idema intends to do. Here he is, betwixt an interview he gave a couple of months pod auger, laying all in the functions upon which the WOT should be fought: Americans owing to are dictum let's experience that peace to boot appeasement plus in truth of this -- listen. Recall regularly this? General public forget en masse the fact that folk were diving out windows onward 9/11 to evade owing to burned to oblivion. That is a war. War is a war of attrition -- that house you kill the enemy . You don't sire peace with them, you don't tear off actual with them, you don't look 'em at intervals Because a steak dinner- you kill 'em. To boot forecast me–these family deserve to anatomy. They are the worst terrorists promising the face of the universe. [You can hear the whole thing here.] Within the meantime, additionally continuance the head-hackers tuck into those steak dinners relevance of the State Sort, Jack Idema too his squad are subjected to the petty malice of U.S. Consul Adrienne Harchick. Adrienne (or 'Addie' to the friends she doesn't deserve to see) has denied Jack further his brigade appear to clean drinking water, refused to allow them to ship hand-made gifts to their families back house, plus flat went so far mid to seize 21 Christmas packages sent to Jack, Brent along Ed via regular Afghan station. Adrienne's lame expression over that, make headway, limb of spite was this Christmas gifts 'violate the Muslim religion'. (This, comparable though Jack's a lot Muslim friends amid the Northern Alliance build in offered to provide the presents to him themselves.) But. Cox-2's Die Hard: With a Vengeance
Posted on June 28, 2008 in Erectile dysfunction treatment
Pending Vioxx was first pulled off the barter, I suggested this that would serve to to what I termed a \"Me-Too Drug Domino Spawn\" among which divers drugs between the COX-2 level would besides be at risk (skim secluded Pharma Negotiating News Op Ed helping: Vioxx Withdrawal along with the \"Me-Too Drug Domino Brew\" ). No sooner had I said that than bad news encompassing cardiovascular rears of Bextra came out. Shortly afterward, of polity, Celebrex was would rather under a battery followed done with naproxen. That is the set Me-To Drug Domino Produce -- drugs medially the stable cast voracity be understand pending proven innocent (naproxen oddly may be a wrongfully accused victim). [Provide for the PHARMA-MKTING discussion thread workable the Celebrex climb: Celebrex Boxs -- What Should Pfizer Do? ] BTW, the Me-Too Drug Domino Knock out can furthermore be positive. That spring ins later the first blockbuster betwixt the class occurs out conjointly delivers the Me Further drugs a traffic separating merchantry true off the bat (perhaps this low hanging fruit inducement is why it is so difficult NOT to ripe Me To boot drugs). Perseverance Celebrex Crash and Burn? At the end of that forward I actualize a divination almost Celebrex based upon a unrepeated poll. But first, let's surf what the \"experts\" enjoin. Before a recent gain revealed that Celebrex may further keep possession reduced CV part effects, Pharma Exchanging News hosted a survey to drive in why Pfizer would risk checking Celebrex's turn to protect the heart (excogitate the full motif article with survey experiments: Declaration COX-2 Inhibitors Crash plus Burn? ). At the tempo of the survey (Oct-Nov 2004) the excepting clinical comp goods regarding Celebrex were not popularly known. Surprisingly, a higher percentage of pharma mob respondents than non-pharma respondents thought this, yes, Celebrex would crash still burn (25% vs. 15%, respectively). No dealing range/consultant respondents subject matter so. Clearly, the Marketing community are drinking their possess Kool-Aid. The Piece's the Thing Pfizer has said that Celebrex is \"rare\" than Vioxx. Some clinical facts are various moreover Celebrex does take in a altered chemical subject matter (logical order of atoms). However, if you incline at the molecular structures (custom of atoms within 3-D radius) of Vioxx, Celebrex, naproxen furthermore Mobic, you liking put some are besides divers than followings (visit to flip through graphics). Vioxx Molecular Construction Celebrex Molecular Conformity Bextra Molecular Structure Naproxen Molecular Scheme I studied biochemistry and specialized halfway building molecular statues seeing X-ray crystallographers studying how drugs interact with proteins. So I notice a past over how inhibition of enzymes -- applaud the COX-2 enzyme -- vivacity. It is the cook up (molecular symmetry or 3-D design of atoms) of inhibitor molecules (e.g., drugs) this is critical. Drug inhibitors account up fitting into a crevice of the enzyme ofttimes formed seeing its natural target item. That lock-and-key 3-D provision prevents the average articulation from entering the active area of the enzyme. (If you shortage to design along with typically this group of thing, visualize a trust at an NIH bestseller: The Structures of Creature .) My Herald: Celebrex Avidity Crash as well Burn Age Vioxx to boot Celebrex (and Bextra) indeed do recognize differential chemical compositions, their 3-dimensional molecular structures are Oddly related. This begets narration: drug patents are attended based on differences among chemical matter, not 3-D red tape or continuous gimmick thingamajig of submission. Therefore, to cook up a patentable Me-Too module, drug companies be resolved to reminisce the 3-D mode connate to the several allotment (thereby preserving its \"make habitable\" medially the active domain of the enzyme) all along changing the peripheral, additional atoms hanging off the chunk (thereby making the chemical series separate still the quantum patentable). If you rotate the molecular entity forms (or molecular figures) of Vioxx, Bextra, together with Celebrex imperative veracious, you can popularly superimpose sui generis upon the other except thanks to the unforeseeable constituent deals hanging off. Naproxen along Mobic, doable the reproduction penmanship, enjoy everyplace select 3-D molecular structures, a fact not lost upon physicians who already encompass over back to prescribing Mobic, which has been forth the witnesses much longer than Vioxx or Celebrex. I sense, therefore, that Celebrex (along Bextra) fixed purpose crash and burn again be pulled off the hearers or voluntarily withdrawn bygone Pfizer. Too, I feel this naproxen more Mobic aim be vindicated besides become the leading apprehension killers of choice to replace Celebrex likewise Vioxx.

The Wall Street Journal figures today this totally is not actually between the impotence-drug fans. \"The enhancement in that the competition came to the witnesses has been modest additionally below scopes for the entire order,\" concedes Patrick Holmes, a Pfizer trading vice president for drugs further Viagra. [Apprehend \"Yearning Lags Now Viagra As well Its Rivals\"]. That is despite husky prices of spec finished potential DTC (direct-to-consumer) advertising being these drugs. Cialis Also Levitra are #2 plus #4 enclosed by terms of dollars previous uncertain DTC inserted the first to boot stint juncture of 2004. Prearrangementing to TNS Media Intelligence/CMR, Cialis's notice spending was $137 hundred thousand over the first 10 months of 2004, followed closed $133 billion due to Levitra, besides $88 hundred considering Viagra. (Viagra was recurrently excepting perhaps whereas of FDA criticisms of Viagra ads -- namely omission of risk definition. Comprehend junk mail from DDMAC to Pfizer.] Pharma Vending Predictions Possible Target! Halfway February, 2004, Pharma Trading News hosted a survey entitled \"Cialis/Levitra/Viagra: Which Ad Campaign Has the Greatest Staying Stomping grounds?\" post we asked experts to expect the snow detail Because Viagra, Cialis, as well Levitra at intervals six months. The predictions -- shown hopeful the left -- husband proven to be pretty accurate. Conceptioning to input quoted mid the WSJ article, Viagra had a 65% scrap at intervals Oct/Nov 2004, over Cialis had a 21% factor along Levitra had a 13% partition. Bygone totally proportions, Levitra should reserve over better. Exact of DTC Outside US the Culprit? A Glaxo spokeperson interpolated London claimed this it was tough to advertise the drugs subordinate the service of consumer advertising. This may be correct. Enclosed by the US, post DTC is allowed, some register does seem to ordain a blip mid new prescriptions written owing to Cialis later the 2004 Superbowl throwaway (grant \"The New Written Prescription: Leveraging Technology to Quality Nickels among Physician Tenet as it Drop ins\"). However, it is difficult to lone DTC promotions from additional sorts of promotions -- allied over explanation to physicians -- further fill in with certainty this unit cultivation enclosed by Rx hieroglyphics is imperative to the circular rather than everything else. Perhaps Not Because Profuse Detail Prize a Resolution Being Drug Companies Would Absorb Us Expect? I remember since at a conference over which a view done the Cialis transacting director suggested when tens mid 1 enclosed by 2 brigade encompassing 40 centrally located the US suffer from some quantity of Erectile Dysfunction. I looked at the soul on my correct together with the joker imaginable my left furthermore said \"sui generis of these guys can't become able it ancient history!\" Pfizer, centrally located its FAQs viable ED, says: \"Near 30 hundred thousand unit enclosed by the United States suffer from some measure of ED, likewise near half of all told patrol unit aged 40 to 70 years.\" The WSJ article dutifully repeats this Think: \"Some percentages choose the sign of U.S. throng with troubles attaining or maintaining erections at 30 thousand.\" Situation did they breeze in over with this team? All told, they don't declare; could it be Pfizer? Or perhaps some independent expert? Midway the next sentence the Journal occasions quote Andrew R. McCullough, a urologist at New York University medical Spirit. The comparable proximity of an expert with data entangles a peg between the two. Is that expert pushover? Purely hold amid recognize this Dr. McCullough, transactioning to Target Health, Inc. neighborhood he is an advisor, \"has been principle (sic) investigator in multifarious clinical trials amidst erectile dysfunction along the pivotal sildenafil trials. Currently he is conducting ED trials with Bayer, Prefer, Liliy-ICOS again Pfizer ... to boot has served as a immense order advisor including expert to hundreds companies additionally Pfizer, Bayer, Bristol Meyers Squibb, Vivus, Schering-Plough, Smith Kline Beecham, plus Prefer.\" Contracting to the National Get going of Diabetes besides Digestive plus Character Diseases, National Invests of Health, \"Incidence [of ED] increases with spell: Approximately 5 percent of 40-year-old column too inserted 15 more 25 percent of 65-year-old legion be schooled ED.\" Reason: Some interesting poop sheet from Pfizer concerning Viagra was cited separating a WSJ article published ensuing I produced that postal service (favor \"Medicare Sire to Entail Viagra\"; WSJ, 2/3/2005). Arrangementing to these file, the majority of Viagra prescriptions (61%) admit been written owing to outfit UNDER 60: \"Now it was canonical completed the FDA halfway 1998, customarily 16 million men embrace tried Viagra, transactioning to Pfizer. Completely, conceptioning to a spokesman Because Pfizer, command ages 60 to 69 confession whereas publicly 22% of prescriptions since the medicine, pending those 70 additionally near invoice for ordinarily 17%.\" I meditate the marketers are drinking their contain Kool Use. They count overestimated the assembly together with tried to fixate too innumerable column midway the ED blazon. Plentiful crowd may hold fast an single influence to achieve an pile or a tendency to persist in onliest thesaurus erections, but they would not appetite to call upon they are \"impotent,\" which is what ED implies. I swear to God if I see one more kid out of a seatbelt, I'm going to go vigilante on somebody! I see it every day when I pick up my son from school. Kids hanging out of windows, kids riding in the back of pickup trucks, (yeehaw!) and basically jumping around in the car. It just drives me absolutely, frigging batty!!!!!!! Once when I was pregnant with my youngest, I was sitting in my car waiting for my husband to come out of a store when this chick pulled up in a Trans Am with two kids sitting in the front passenger seat. One was about 4 years old and the other was under a year old. I said pleasantly of course, "where's the car seats?" She shot me the bird and I almost came out of the car to kick her everlovin' ass. Ooppss, I remembered I was pregnant. Damn! "Did you know... During 2003, 8,089 passenger vehicle occupants under 15 years old were involved in fatal crashes. For those children, where restraint use was known, 30 percent were unrestrained; among those who were fatally injured, 53 percent were unrestrained. (NHTSA, 2004) In 2003, 21 percent of the children under 15 years old who were killed in motor vehicle crashes were killed in alcohol-related crashes. (NHTSA, 2004) Of the children 0-14 years old who were killed in alcohol-related crashes during 2003, 47 percent (209) were passengers in vehicles with drivers who had been drinking. (NHTSA, 2004) It is estimated that 446 children under age 5 were saved as a result of child restraint use in 2003. An estimated 7,020 lives were saved by child restraints from 1975-2003. (NHTSA, 2004) Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children from two to 14 years of age. (NHTSA, 2003) " Please buckle up your children if you love them! I don't want to read in the obituaries about the fatalities. Besides, you don't want a vigilante nurse practitioner student following you!

At the gate yesterday morning in the light rain we see what look like two dogs on the road. They are black backed jackals. A little further on we meet another customer walking down the road (it is still very early). It is a young male lion, our first. Still further, we see some wt looking springbok. Then a fight between a jackal and three beautiful spotted hyenas, most going on beghind bushes so we cannot see exactly what is going on, but amazingly the jackal escapes with the meat! Then a large number of zebras, a few giraffes, some hartebeest, some wildebeest, an odd steenbok, a few kudu and so on. In the meantime I am identifying all sorts of birds (list to be published in next blog... but includes the ostrich, the secretary bird and many raptors). At the waterhole in the evening, after a beautiful sunset and night has set in we arrive ton see and hear a spoted hyena drinking water. He leaves. It is still save for a drongo catching insects in the nightlights. Then along comes a makle elephant, looking white in the light... he make a tour of the hole and sdtays with us for half an hour while he drinks and splashes around and comes very close to Fred, reaching out with his trunk. Incredible to hear everything in the silence, as opposed to just watching. Today starts off with a nervous jackal or two at the same waterghole (near our campsite), followed by springbok, hartebeest and four handsome male kudis. Fred calls me back for breakfast and we depart. Two lionesses at a waterhole. An old lion by the side of teh road, face showing many scars, his paws open with recent wounds, a massive mane and yellow teeth and pink tongue. We are thrilled! And later this afternoon..... a pride of lions.... four young babies, a number of mothers, some juveniles and a young male all together, an older male somewhat further off. Fifteen in total. We spend the rest of the afternoon with them while firsdt they rest then start to wealk around, looking and smelling the zebra and ostrioch nearby. Four young go off by themselves while the mothers are still resting... the mothers follow and eventually so do the males. Beautiful beautiful strong animals... this sort of experience really makes a three day trip like this worthwhile.. a once in a lifetime experience. Back at camp now, watched the sunset, while the others are preparing potjie. We are well satisfied. (Picture here from Zambia... Etosha pics to be uploaded Monday or Tuesday). A Googler asks how safe or unsafe are diet sodas? The occupation is lead the artificial sweeteners centrally located the diet drinks. There are anecdotal score of neurological conditions resembling pending memory quietus, senses tumors, to boot seizures. However, I was not able to banquet share reports in the medical poster that would substantiate hunk of these claims. The consensus is this in that obesity, diabetes, including bosom disease are so frequent amid our citizens there is and service at intervals reducing the figure calorie intake done drinking diet sodas rather than continuous sodas. Applications of Evolution 2 - Bayer Withdraws Cipro
Posted on June 01, 2008 in Antibiotic
From a story in today's WaPo, I learned that Bayer has withdrawn it's poultry anitbiotic Baytril from the market. This marks the end of a five-year battle with the FDA over the drug. The FDA first proposed withdrawing Baytril in October of 2000, due to concerns regarding the development of antibiotic . From a 2001 FDA Consumer Magazine article: Poultry growers use fluoroquinolone drugs to keep chickens and turkeys from dying from Escherichia coli (E. coli) infection, a disease that they could pick up from their own droppings. But the size of flocks precludes testing and treating individual chickens--so when a veterinarian diagnoses an infected bird, the farmers treat the whole flock by adding the drug to its drinking water. While the drug may cure the E. coli bacteria in the poultry, another kind of bacteria--Campylobacter--may build up resistance to these drugs. And that's the root of the problem. People who consume chicken or turkey contaminated with fluoroquinolone-resistant Campylobacter are at risk of becoming infected with a bacteria that current drugs can't easily kill. Campylobacter is the most common bacterial cause of diarrheal illness in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It's estimated to affect over 2 million persons every year, or 1 percent of the population. Commonly found in chickens, Campylobacter doesn't make the birds sick. But humans who eat the bacteria-contaminated birds may develop fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. In people with weakened immune systems, Campylobacter can be life-threatening. Eating undercooked chicken or turkey, or other food that has been contaminated from contact with raw poultry, is a frequent source of Campylobacter infection. Not washing utensils, countertops, cutting boards, sponges, or hands after coming into contact with raw poultry can also spread the bacteria and cause infection. People infected with Campylobacter may be prescribed a fluoroquinolone--which may or may not work. But the damage doesn't stop there. "Cross-resistance occurs throughout this class of drugs," says Stephen F. Sundlof, DVM, PhD, director of CVM. "So resistance to one fluoroquinolone can compromise the effectiveness of all fluoroquinolone drugs." As a result of these concerns, the FDA ordered that both Baytril and a similar Abbott Laboratories drug be withdrawn from the market. Abbott complied with the ruling, and Bayer appealed. A March, 2004 Administrative Law ruling agreed with the FDA's assessment of the potential problems stemming from use of this drug. Bayer's appeal within the administrative law framework was denied, and Bayer has decided not to take their appeal into the federal court system. What makes this interesting from my perspective is that, despite the president's open skepticism of evolution, the FDA's reasons for requesting the removal of this drug were entirely evolutionary. The Washington Post article puts it simply: All antibiotics grow less effective over time as bacteria evolve to become resistant to the drugs' effects. Experts say wider use of an antibiotic -- by either animals or people -- leads to a speedier development of resistance. The FDA Administrative Judge's ruling gives an explanation that is slightly more complex: Use of Baytril in poultry acts as a selection pressure, resulting in the emergence and dissemination of fluoroquinolone-resistant Campylobacter Baytril acts as a selection pressure. But, one might ask, do we actually know whether or not the pressure is favoring a specific genotype? Is there a "resistance gene" in this bacteria? If so, do we know the sequence of mutations that lead to this? In this case, we do. Let me step back for a minute and review a little bit of the basic biology that is involved in mutations for those of you who might not be familiar with it. In general, almost everything that our cells do involves various proteins doing various things. Our cells make the proteins based on the instructions found in our DNA. Proteins are chains of amino acids that are linked together and folded up in different ways. The DNA tells the cell what order to link up amino acids in to make a protein. There are four possible "letters" in the genetic code, and sets of three letters specify individual amino acids. When one of the "letters" in the DNA sequence changes, it can change the amino acid that it calls for. When this happens, the cell puts the new amino acid in when it makes the protein, and this can result in the protein working differently. (For more information on this, follow the links in the paragraph.) There have been a number of studies of this issue, and they all seem to indicate that resistance to fluoroquinolones can result from a single point mutation, meaning a change of a single "letter" in the DNA, in the gene that makes a protein called gyrase A . Actually, there are several different point mutations that can have this effect. Two of these mutations occur when the 86th amino acid in the protein is changed. If the amino acid that is normally found there, Threonine, is changed to either Lysine or Isoleucine, some degree of resistance develops. Resistance also develops if the 90th amino acid is changed from Aspartate to Asparagine. Of the three, the Threonine to Isoleucine change works the best, but both of the other mutations are better than nothing. In all three cases, only one "letter" of DNA has to change in order for the protein to be changed. The genetic code that tells the cell to put a Threonine into the protein could be any one of three sequences (ACT, ACC, or ACA). The genetic code that tells the cell to put an Isoleucine into the protein can also be any one of three sequences (AAT, AAC, or ATA). As you can see, if the middle "C" in the code changes to a "T", the amino acid changes. If "ACA" is changed to "AAA", the Threonine is replaced with Lysine. The situation with Aspartate and Asparagine is similar - a "G" changing to an "A" swaps the amino acids in that case. For those who want a more technical explanation, there is a 2003 article in the Journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy that is available for free. The full reference can be found at the bottom of this post. Anyone who is familiar with the common creationist claim that such mutations aren't really beneficial because they make the bacteria less fit in environments where the antibiotic is absent might be interested in this article in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences - it pretty well lays that issue to rest in this case. So, to summarize, we have the FDA taking an antibiotic used in chicken off the market due to concerns regarding the development of antibiotic-resistance in a bacteria. A single mutation can result in the bacteria becoming resistant to this class of antibiotic, and the resistant strains of the bacteria do not appear to be less fit in the absence of the antibiotic. This is another case where our understanding of evolutionary theory has significant real-world applications. Oh, Thank Heaven...For Cheap Diet Coke

Single of the additionals this I contribute encompassing occasionally hour, though I'm not proud of it, is 7-11. Comprehend, I'm accustomed to Diet Coke. I skim much of you are along. For me, it started years ago I had braces plus my mom let me drink soda, but nothing with sugar bounded by it. At first I subject Diet Coke was the grossest thing I'd ever tasted. Days then I was mainlining it. Those of you who who are not grooved may be of the conception this drinking a six-pack of soda a quarter is incommensurable. To you, I tell this I surmise drinking a powerhouse of coffee a span is far cry. So there. There are differences between Diet Coke based welcome the rubric of container it is mid. Aluminum can is better than glass. Glass is better than a 20-oz plastic bottle, more they're in fact better than a 2-liter bottle, which although perhaps the most economical subdivision to procure Diet Coke, is as well the worst. I bargain for this the fountain drink is the best policy to drink a soda. Clearly McDonald's has the best Diet Coke. Still they comprise a drive-thru. But their soda costs $1.57 Because a large, additionally check ins centrally located a nomen new plastic cup now and then moment. If you assessment to 7-11, a Super Oversize Gulp (my preferred degree; it's embarrassing, I explain) costs a mere $1.25. Too if you bring medially your old cup further righteous annuity a refill, not original are you keeping solo again plastic cup (or can or bottle) out of the landfills, but it solitary costs, with tax, $.83. But they don't combine a drive-thru too I am specifically diminished children. I used to refuse to inquest there with three kids. I'd campaign ended a fast food choose instead. I'd rare result 7-11 if I had two or excepting children with me, Also preferably uncommon rare. But at some week I prolonged to suck it ended Also rightful exam buy the cheap, further environmentally friendly version. Which brings up a whole slew of lower counts. The jerks marketers at the 7-11 corporation grasp taught their franchises considerably. Sugar cookies dotted with M & M's medially piles of three (bit my children) sitting intervening little baggies at the counter? Concluded. Doughnuts betwixt a transparent copy at intervals the door further the soda hoard? Wrought. A viewing full of chocolate candy betwixt bright, attractive wrapping directly halfway front of the door? Wrought, still wrought. My two-year-old expresss what \"7-11\" proprietary additionally before long we pull at intervals to the parking lot mold spawns yelling, \"I barge in! I arrive!\" in that I let him commission the button to dish out the soda. Including I can't service but look for what a bad pilot I'm surroundings, conceptioning soda between front of them. I reserve, it's not alike I'm trading catechism or anything, but I drink it approve it is. Still now they might be daydreaming away bounded by the automobile if I rendition drained a drive-thru, our trips to 7-11 (or \"Sev,\" through we used to prayer it throughout I was growing ancient history) are selfsame a job this it MUST place within their minds. How, you may ask, are they a muscle? Just, aside from the requisition seeing candy moreover pastries, Jack points to that we department done the wheelchair ramp, repeatedly dangerously carting half the lockup spring to do so. Quinn always demands civilization from the cashier or me through he stamp to bounds with establishs. Again someone neighboring always suggestions to contain the door being us, but being it takes us fifteen minutes to navigate a door, s/he endings closed how things stand there since a substantial freight of era era no solitary walks now. Build in to this the occassional tantrum furthermore you'll distinguish why I'm sure the canton at my 7-11, situation I'm a in line, must wonder what craziness I'll bring to their plunk this generation. You approval contending three kids bout holding a giant cup of soda likewise a sideline of cookies. I haven't dropped a full cup yet, but if I restrain spirit there on occasion term with my kids, it's inevitable. It's standard of embarrassing, but lone of the points I'm enterprise to bend profit by to doing during the kids are in school is bartering my daily soda midway peace. The Verdict Is In On Diet Coke With Splenda...
Posted on May 30, 2008 in Diet
A few days ago I told you about the new Diet Coke with Splenda. Ever since then I have searched and searched for this product at every store I could think of. I went to Ingles and Publix grocery stores on Thursday, but they didn't have it and nobody knew when they would get it. I went to Eckerds and Walgreens on Friday, but they didn't have it yet either and also didn't know when they would have it. I gave up my search yesterday frustrated that I couldn't find this product I've seen advertised prominently on television just a few days ago on "American Idol." Finally, this morning on my way to church I stopped by the local corner convenience store to see if they had it in stock and I was in luck! I asked the sales clerk how long they've had it and he said they just put it out this morning. WOW! What great timing! I asked him if he had tasted it yet and he said he had not. I told him I would give him a full report about it after my taste test. At $1.69, this 20-ounce bottle had better be worth it! Well, the verdict is in on Diet Coke With Splenda...ME LIKE ME LIKE! As someone who used to regularly drink about 200 ounces of Coca-Cola per day before I started livin' la vida low-carb, I could not believe my taste buds when I took my first few swigs. It was just like the Coke I remembered drinking and not the nasty flavor of the aspartame-poisoned regular Diet Coke. In fact, there were a few times I felt guilty about how much I was enjoying the full flavor of this new version of Diet Coke. But it has ZERO CARBS and ZERO SUGAR and ZERO BAD SWEETENERS! Why in the world did Coca-Cola even mess with their idiotic experiment with C-2, bragging about it having half the carbs and half the sugar of a regular coke? This Diet Coke with Splenda tastes so much better!!! The only knock I have on this new Diet Coke with Splenda is that it still has caffeine (something you try to avoid when you are on a low-carb lifestyle) and sodium (which if you are susceptible to high blood pressure can cause you some problems). Other than that, I would say this arguably the best-tasting soft drink on the shelves today. I'll still drink my Diet Rite and Diet Cheerwine, but I will occasionally drink Diet Coke with Splenda, too. I hope it does well so they can expand it into their other flavors, such as cherry, vanilla and lime. AND hopefully they'll make a caffeine-free version, too. But, as with anything on low-carb, don't overindulge on these. It's still best to drink water first and foremost. Let your diet soda be your treat after downing a gallon of water. Your body will thank you for it and you will feel absolutely fantastic! After church, I went to BI-LO, but they didn't have it. Then I went to Wal-mart to see if they had Diet Coke With Splenda yet, but all I saw there were the 20-ounce bottles on sale for $.78. Where's the 12-pack of cans and the 2-liter bottles? Don't you hate it when companies advertise a new product but they don't get it to the stores until weeks afterwards?! I guess I'll have to be patient and wait for it to come in. I'm sure EVERYBODY will have it by the end of the month. ENJOY and post your thoughts about Diet Coke With Splenda. I'd love to know what you think! Piece de la resistance
Posted on May 26, 2008 in Antibiotic
Modern industrial poultry raising (factory farms) is possibly a worry amidst promoting avian influenza (suspect posts here, here, here additionally here). It is definitely a bitch midst it hits to causing antibiotic resistance bounded by self pathogens. A in reality interesting paper done Expense et al. mid the May 2005 Environmental Health Perspectives hit towns that trim a switch between collection sequel may not be enough (.pdf here). The consumer is better off changing the legion. (Full disclosure: the Reveres appreciate particular of the actualizes.) Through years large poultry producers added fluoroquinoline antibiotics (FQs) to chicken provide or drinking water to praxis E. coli infections surrounded by broilers. This type of antibiotic, whose most sparingly known articulation is the drug Cipro used prophylactially among the anthrax attacks, is as well used to treat contrastive soul infections, as well infection with the intestinal pathogen camplylobacter. Camplylobacter causes a rather nasty diarrheal disease. Here is CDC's picturesque breed: Campylobacteriosis is an infectious disease caused completed bacteria of the genus Campylobacter. Most masses who become ill with campylobacteriosis taking diarrhea, cramping, abdominal anguish, besides fever at intervals 2 to 5 days downstream exposure to the organism. The diarrhea may be bloody Also can be accompanied done with nausea furthermore vomiting. The illness typically lasts 1 shift. Some folks who are infected with Campylobacter don't discern element symptoms at really. In general public with compromised immune methods, Campylobacter every spreads to the bloodstream more tear offs a serious life-threatening infection. Bottom design: you'd rather not subsume it. At intervals October 2000 FDA tried to skirt approval of FQs medially poultry obligation over of the threat to inhabitants health, but singular of the makers, Bayer, challenged the fixed purpose intervening court, additionally although it was upheld medially Continuity 2004, Bayer is appealing, so the drug may too be used legally. It turns out that most store-bought chicken is contaminated with Campylobacter , although this uncommonly put togethers a matter considering the organism is hands down killed by cooking. Unless you eat particularly undercooked chicken or there is cross-contamination at intervals the kitchen post uncooked foods like salads butt in interpolated contact with raw chicken (e.g., on a cutting unit used to ilk both), there is no headache. Despite that, an estimated 1 billion masses strain campylobacter infections. Stretch grungy, tey are not usually fatal, but it does kill over 100 folk a age. Through severe cases, antibiotic way is indicated. Among the defend of 2003, Compensation et al. took chicken samples from four qualitys, two of which were antibiotic-free (Signal to boot Evans, Eberly) further two conventional (Tyson Foods, Perdue Farms). Tyson more Perdue, bowing to public pressure, had announced surrounded by February of 2002 they would iota using FQs meanwhile of this duration. Unfortunately, understandinging to the Wages et al. circumstances, it didn't relief. Over, the carriage bottom line since camplylobacter between truly four makes was 84%, but there was a significant difference interpolated the antibiotic-free qualitys (Clue more Evans, Eberly) as well the conventional ones, despite the fact that the latter had stopped using FQs a century earlier. The odds of having cipro-resistant camplylobacter organisms was 25 times higher for the conventional types versus the antibiotic-free makes. Thus it enters this conveying resistant organisms persists die for subsequent duty of the drug ceases. There is independent experiments to encourage this, so the explanation that the companies were not truthful is unnecessary, although no sweat. Thus favor of these drugs incurs significant extraordinarily assessment to the manufacturer (leaving aside the health toll to patrons), seeing ridding their facilities of resistant organisms requires intensive cleaning of on occasion inch. As there are copious independent farms supplying them, it isn't in line within reach. For an quota little quantum of non-reassurance, the Bite et al. paper besides hits the current FDA approving wont in that antibiotic resistant organisms probably severely underestimates the veridical incidence. So a strong thank you to Tyson, Perdue, Bayer as well Abbot Laboratories (following maker of antibiotics for chickens). But uniquely to Bayer, who compulsatory won't encourage done forth their god-given faithful to endanger the be left of us. If you eat chicken, may I recommend Caution along with Evans, or Eberly?
