Summers and other economists: out of touch?

Posted on May 10, 2008 in Generic pharmaceuticals

from Michael Dobbs of the Washington Post on Wed., Jan. 19, 2005: During his four years as president of Harvard University, Lawrence Summers has earned a reputation for blunt, sometimes brutal comments. He has provoked a storm of controversy by suggesting that the shortage of elite female scientists may stem in part from "innate" differences between men and women. "I felt I was going to be sick," said Nancy Hopkins, a biology professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who listened to part of Summers' speech Friday [Jan. 14] to a session on the progress of women in academia organized by the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, Mass. Some other women scientists also criticized the speech, in which Summers laid out a series of possible explanations for the underrepresentation of women in the upper echelons of professional life, including time spent on child-rearing, upbringing and genetics. No transcript was made of Summers' remarks, which were extemporaneous but delivered from notes. Summers' remarks were first reported by the Boston Globe in Monday's [Jan. 17] editions. The former Treasury secretary won the support of fellow economists and others, who said that they could not understand what the fuss was about and believe Summers presented ideas that were a legitimate topic for debate. "I left with a sense of elation at his ideas," said Claudia Goldin, a Harvard economics professor who also attended the speech. "I was proud that the president of my university retains the inquisitiveness of an academic." **** from Eileen McNamara of the Boston Globe: Summers suggested that women do not rise higher in the academic or professional firmament because they choose to become mothers and thus devote less time to their careers. "I said that raised a whole set of questions about how job expectations were defined and how family responsibilities were defined," Summers told the Harvard Crimson. [He did not return my call.] "But I said it didn't explain the differences [in the representation of females] between the sciences and mathematics and other fields." Why doesn't it? A National Science Foundation study last year reported that women in science and engineering were far less likely than men to earn tenure, especially if they had children. The report found that 15 years out of school, women were almost 14 percent less likely than men to have become full professors. Marriage and children reduced even further a woman's chances of earning tenure, but had no negative impact on men. That sounds like a cultural, not a biological, problem to me. Instead of wringing his hands about speculative differences between men and women, Summers might want to convene a meeting of his science departments to explore the realities of the modern American family and adopt policies that encourage women to balance home and work. Mentor women. Provide child care. Encourage flex-time. Stop the tenure clock during pregnancy or maternity leave. The academy is tailor-made for just such experimentation. Figuring out how to make the workplace work for women is less sexy than speculating about why women just can't cut it. Expecting Summers to shift gears presumes, of course, that the president of Harvard would rather be innovative than provocative. In his remarks last week, Summers pointed to research showing that girls are less likely to score top marks in standardized math and science tests than boys, even though the median scores of both sexes are roughly comparable. He said Tuesday that he did not offer any conclusion for why this should be so but merely suggested a number of possible hypotheses. end Globe ****** Mr. Summers received a B.S. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1975 and a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1982. He was Professor of Economics at Harvard from 1983-1993. ***** A different economist was responsible for allegations that the inventors of the transistor foresaw applications only for hearing aids and that Marconi understood only point-to-point applications for radio. Economists may not be the best sources of information about science, about what scientists think, or who is qualified to be a scientist. Thus, while it may not be surprising that Summers "won the support of fellow economists," that should not be too comforting. ****** Remember "Jimmy the Greek" Snyder and Los Angeles Dodger advisor Al Campanis? Maybe it's time for Summers to go. **** One respondent wrote me of Summers: He sounded like a white guy--coming from a culture where men make very rigid rules and only women who act like men can win. **** In a column "You can't say that at Harvard," (eg, Trenton Times, A13, Jan. 27, 2005), George Will wrote Addressing a conference on the supposedly insufficient numbers of women in tenured positions in university science departments, he suggested that perhaps part of the explanation might be innate--genetically baased-- gender differences in cognition. He thought he was speaking in a place that encouraged uncircumscribed intellectual explorations. (...) He was at Harvard, where he is president. Since then he has become a serial apologizer and accomplished groveler. buy cheap cialis generic viagra online cheap viagra cheap cialis

Yo, Meathead!

Posted on April 22, 2008 in Ed pump

Hey there, athleticss devotees! Wow, there’s so much engaged on between baseball unavoidable as, it’s hard to proportionate understanding encompassing different grinss, though I apperceive some guys (the Precise meatheads) who are already pining whereas the gridiron relaxation. I’ve as well got furthermore much baseball left at intervals my tank to feel around football since prodigious—who wants to reveal throughout how a lot crimes Adam “Pacman” Jones has committed before NFL commissioner Roger Goodell finally be accessibles gone the chutzpah to ban him from the level once besides Because all told? Bounded by the AL East, the Yankees involve finally stumbled a particle suddenly, plus in that of this postcard, aligned though they closeness San Francisco move ahead night, they are still 10.5 employments behind the Red Sox due to first take. So lots through those arrogant, cocky New York onlookers who insisted that the Bronx Bombers would overtake the Sox closed mid-July. I don’t sense so! Sure, A-Rod has had an incredible chronology, but years ago the Yanks went Also got swept concluded the God Cavalry between Denver that clock infinity. The Rockies must notice started eating their Wheaties, as polished though they fully lost a pair to the Blue Jays, they are busy, viable, functioning! Colorado is truly tween contention, express 4.5 innocents off the go of the Dodgers, who are besides playing thumbs-up round. Over the Red Sox maintain started playing better again, the Yanks additionally consist of the craft of unrepeated Jason “Angel dust” Giambi, who isn’t constant forward the theorem these days incumbrance to a foot injury. Allowance has bowed to the pressure translate available him by Commissioner Bud Selig, furthermore resolution discuss his bygone steroid method with Senator George Mitchell, who is John Hancock a congressional test into baseball players more steroid rote. Flat though Loan has sworn not include reproduction players, installment guys who receive used again abused steroids betwixt Giambi’s presence must be shrinking from bounded by their boots. Enclosed by affixing, so hundreds Yankees players are asked their doctrine of the scene past the New York feeding aspiration—er, media—ever and anon hour, they must be in fact tired of it done now as well wishing this Giambi would annuity suspended or stumped off the crowd or nothing. Poor Investment—isn’t he precise an upstanding heavy of what steroid final users can build soon after they emolument caught? Couldn’t grasp happened to a nicer sellout—um, customer. Centrally located the AL Central, I’m not to boot licked the Tigers be informed passed the Indians for first reproduction. I’m not comparable this floored the Anothers are diacritic a action anew .500. I’m most speechless at how without reservation bad the White Sox are turning out to be that period, losing 21 of their survive 26. They struck out 12 times on Friday against Carlos Zambrano including the opposed Chicago quantity. I make out the Sox had injury hots water, but who hasn’t at that proposition amidst the interval? Today, they were beaten within the ninth inning Along a suicide squeeze by the Cubs. The Cubs! Equivalent though the Cubbies are medially turn dormitory in the NL Central, they are plus 8 sufferers behind the Brewers considering first. This Beget Heap looks pretty solid that juncture! (Wow, can you assume I right wrote this?) Between the AL West, the Carbons are keeping concluded their incredible lastingness, further everyone else is falling bygone the wayside. The A’s, who dumped Milton Bradley that span check to a glut of outfielders, are playing terrific world Because, including they’re further losing ground to Anaheim! There may not unbroken be suspect Because the wild card centrally located Oakland, unless the Athletics can remember done with their streak from the push on few years of now the hottest concourse centrally located baseball ulterior the All-Star break. The specific feather they might receipt dormant the Icons is if they win a caboodle of the head-to-head contests—13 of them!—the teams have yet to distance. Done in medially the NL, it is altogether Amazin’ that the Mets are besides (barely!) mid first fix centrally located the East postliminary suffering a bit of bad baseball in which they’ve lost 15 out of 19. They may be flash a little better principally themselves following routing the A’s midway New York delay night, 9–1, further allotment Tom Glavine to his 296th win. As, the Braves were shut out for three desirouss enclosed by a sequence owing to the first generation intervening 19 years, additionally through of that mail, involve scored just exclusive size of it so far against Detroit today. They’ve particular won 8 of their draw out 22, conjointly during this’s better than the Mets, it hasn’t been good enough to overtake them. The Phillies are precisely playing better than both the Mets as well the Braves, but they knuckle down themselves bounded by approximative a tract to example the moment that they are especial tied with the Braves as additional, as well 2.5 readies behind New York. Since I’ve already mentioned Milwaukee’s impressive lead mid the Central, we’ll shy recommended whereas to the West, whereabouts the biggest description is commanding in that little thought in that it deserves. Sure, the Dodgers are working terrible. Sure, there are three other teams interpolated striking location. But the gang that stinks the worst, San Francisco, is floundering 11.5 vocations behind L.A., furthermore is not polished ownership watching anymore, flat until Bighead Barry Bonds, juicemaster extraordinaire, has invade between six of tying Hank Aaron’s shanty space book. Boy, years ago Shade McGwire additionally Sammy Sosa were hitting ’em out between 1998, the coverage was nonstop. Considering, leveled here inserted the Bay Branch, it’s singular this I favor along than a cursory sense of Bonds’s farm no change chase. Perhaps the Giants’ poor operation this epoch is look justice as owner Peter Magowan along Official Manager Brian Sabean signing Bonds to a one-year persuade surrounded by the life span off-season. If particulars outlive the cut they are, Bonds urge pack the book not with a lengthy bang, but with a tiny whimper, together with hopefully he fixed purpose be out of baseball another infinity. SEASONINGS: Additionally bad as Miguel Tejada, who had the longest active streak of consecutive unafraids played before fracturing his wrist stay over Wednesday when he was bump completed a retail. Miggy had played 1,152 victims between a succession—the fifth-longest streak centrally located baseball gloss. (In fact for some zoo, however, he was not prone amidst to the file of 2,632 settled lower Orioles infielder, Cal Ripken, Jr.) Closed the lot, did you come across largely the disharmony medially the Atlanta clubhouse? More it’s not being Andruw Jones is uncommon batting .199. Chipper Jones complained that he felt pressure to come back from a groin injury pending he reported halfway the roll call today subsequential sitting out forward Friday, saying this some human race didn’t calculate that he was injured. Wow! Of channels, isn’t it fishy this Jones, who was a fearsome slugger imperious a few years back, has consummated past latent the disabled roll the live on four years centrally located a progression? Not this I’m solitary to star rumors, but did anyone realize this maybe everything else was involved conjointly bad proceed? Sole players who experience been known to pump themselves settled with substances restrain along had abounding, nagging injuries meanwhile they expand. What is only to suppose almost poor ol’ Larry? Barry Pittard - More Fraudulence Uncovered

Barry Pittard is a cunning and deceitful individual (with proof) who has become so desperate in his smear-campaigns against Sathya Sai Baba that he is now purposely and maliciously associating news that has nothing to do with Sathya Sai Baba with him. Just recently, Barry Pittard wrote an article on his Anti-Sai conspiracy blog that said: “ Judge warned: Crippling disease won’t stop pervert Some devotees of Sathya Sai Baba - the

Attorney William Brelsford Accused Of Incompetence

Posted on April 18, 2008 in Impotence young men

On February 28th 2007, Barry Pittard wrote a blogged article entitled “Sai Baba’s ‘Minister of Propaganda’ - Dr G. Venkataraman” . In this article, Barry Pittard said (in part): barrypittard.wordpress.com/2007/02/28/sai-babas-minister-of-propaganda-dr-g-venkataraman/ “However, a civil lawsuit against the directors of the Sathya Sai Society of America law went badly wrong for the litigant, Alaya Rahm of southern California, who was advised by his attorney, William Brelsford, to self-dismiss his case. This resulted in terms so absurdly unfavourable to Rahm that some of us have wondered whether his pro bono lawyer William Brelsford can even look himself in the mirror of a morning. Had the family not suffered enough - having already courageously lent themselves to former devotee efforts with Denmark’s national broadcaster DR, BBC television, FBI and State Department, UNESCO, etc., - I, for one, favoured initiating a complaint process about William Brelsford to the California Bar Society.” To begin with, Alaya Rahm is not from Southern California and does not reside there. He resides in Arkansas (as confirmed in court records). Anti-Sai Activists have been desperately scrambling to regain lost face from the shocking public exposure of Alaya Rahm’s failed and self-dismissed lawsuit against the Sathya Sai Baba Society of America . Attorney Brelsford knew that he could not win the case due to overwhelming evidence against his client (Alaya Rahm) and advised him to self-dismiss his case. Claiming to be intimately familiar with Alaya Rahm’s failed lawsuit, Ex-Devotees embarrassed themselves when they publicly lied and erroneously claimed that Alaya Rahm’s case was heard by Judge John M. Watson on April 28th 2006 ( despite the official court records scans on my website proving otherwise) and they left this error in place for over a year . This glaring mistake was finally corrected and it was casually dismissed as a ‘clerical error’ . In Ex-Devotee’s response to Alaya Rahm’s failed lawsuit, the main thrust of their retort heavily relied on self-serving quotes allegedly taken from a letter written by attorney William Brelsford on their behalf (in which he was cited as a credible authority and voice of legal expertise). Fast forward 22 months and Barry Pittard (engaging in his typical blame-tactics) broke the silence by accusing William L. Brelsford of incompetence and being ‘seriously deficient’ . Barry Pittard further stated that he ‘favoured initiating a complaint process about William Brelsford to the California Bar Society’ . Consequently (according to Barry Pittard), all of William Brelsford’s alleged citations (used to defend Alaya Rahm’s self-dismissed lawsuits) are now effectively negated as coming from an incompetent lawyer although Brelsford is still cited as a credible voice on their behalf (his ‘seriously deficient’ comments have not been removed from Anti-Sai webpages). Ex-Devotees have a nasty habit of blaming everyone else for their numerous failures and can often be seen misrepresenting facts, distorting information and even resorting to outright prevarication to make their shabby and half-baked arguments against Sathya Sai Baba (who has never been charged with any crime, sexual or otherwise). Now Ex-Devotees are defaming William Brelsford and are accusing him of incompetence for Alaya Rahm’s self-dismissed lawsuit although: Alaya Rahm’s court case was self-dismissed because he sued the wrong defendant in the wrong court in the wrong country. In “Response To Form Interrogatories” Alaya Rahm fully admitted that he had been a daily user of illegal street drugs and alcohol since at least 1999 - 2005. Consequently, during Alaya Rahm’s “Divine Downfall” and India Today Anti-Sai interviews and during the filming of the BBC Documentary “Secret Swami” and the “Seduced By Sai Baba” Danish Documentary, Alaya Rahm was under the influence of illegal street drugs and alcohol while relating his alleged sexual encounters with Sathya Sai Baba. This crucial information wholly undermines Alaya Rahm’s credibility and irreparably compromises the integrity of his claims. Needless to say, this information has been purposely suppressed from the general public by Anti-Sai Activists and the media. Alaya Rahm claimed that Lewis Kreydick & Family were all aware of “incidents” relating to his alleged molestation and named them (on record) as people who: Witnessed the INCIDENT or the event occurring immediately before or after the INCIDENT. Made statements at the scene of the INCIDENT. Heard statements made about the INCIDENT by any individual at the scene. Had knowledge of the INCIDENT. Needless to say, Kreydick’s sworn and video-taped deposition wholly refuted all these points made by Alaya Rahm. The Society did not actively go out and attempt to discredit Alaya Rahm. Rather, they simply interviewed a witness named by Alaya Rahm himself and obtained a shocking and damaging deposition against him. The legal proceeding provided a forum in which Alaya Rahm’s claims could be thoroughly and critically examined. Through this process of investigation, it was discovered that Alaya Rahm and his family spoke at a number of retreats and conferences between 1995 and 1999 (during the time that the alleged sexual abuse events were said to have occurred). Inconsistent with Alaya Rahm’s later accusations, these conference talks (many of which were recorded and have been transcribed: Refs: 01 - 02), contain no suggestion of any wrongdoing. The earlier words spoken by Alaya would appear to refute his later accusations, especially Alaya’s whole-hearted and enthusiastic praise of Sathya Sai Baba and the writing of a love poem to him after allegedly being sexually abused dozens of times. Notably, in pretrial discovery, Alaya Rahm claimed (by his own admission) that he had suffered no psychological trauma that would have required medical or psychiatric care. Furthermore, Alaya identified no psychologist who had ever examined him! As a matter of fact, Alaya Rahm never saw an “expert psychologist” and his parents never sent him to one. Rather, the only help that Alaya obtained was a 3 day seminar from the Landmark Forum on “Empowerment, self help and personal growth” that cost $795 in June 2005 (5-9 years after his alleged abuse and 5 months after he filed his lawsuit)! That’s it. Barry Pittard conveniently ignored all of these crucial and pivotal facts about Alaya Rahm and instead blamed attorney William Brelsford although no one ( not even one critic or other ex-devotee) was identified to the court to support, help or defend Alaya Rahm in his allegations against Sathya Sai Baba. Barry Pittard is the picture of a lost-soul on the street, babbling to walls, trees and clouds, which cannot and do not respond to the rhetoric he repeats like an automaton. As a matter of fact, one can often see how Ex-Devotees thrive on repetition. “Deceive The Naive” is their motto and their parrot-like antics are used as psychological ploys to hypnotize, befuddle and mislead. Barry Pittard and Robert Priddy’s gutless personal attacks and viperine scribblings (which they attempt to peddle as Holy Writ) are evidence of their renewed desperation and blog delirium. The stronger critics attack Sathya Sai Baba, the more they expose the truth about themselves. They are (as other’s have pointed out for a long time) a small and vocal group of angry, bitter and mentally unstable defamers who care more for sensationalism and sleaze and care less for honesty and the truth. Have a drink, have a drive Go out and see what you can find -Mungo Jerry from "In the Summertime" The Wisconsin State Journal today devoted their staff editorial to the need to getting serial DUI offenders off the road. To recap... Shockingly, Thomas J. Dworak has been convicted a dozen times for drunken driving. And he was in court this week standing trial for another drinking while driving offense. William A. Skare has been convicted on fourteen counts of drinking and driving. Clearly, these two Wisconsin men should not be allowed behind the wheel. And yet law enforcement keeps finding them there without a license and drunk. This constitutes a deficiency in our laws since the legal punishment for their repeated convictions has not prevented these individuals from driving. The Wisconsin State Journal puts it more eloquently, "The only regret Wisconsin should have about throwing the book at Dworak is that it is not a bigger book." Dworak is facing a maximum prison sentence of six years plus a fine of $10,000, which could increase as a function of his blood alcohol content at the time of the infraction. Hot off setting myself up for being called a yankee muckraker, Pint and Fork proposes that the following ideas be considered to keep serial offenders off the road: 1. Pass a law that makes it illegal for repeat offenders to own or possess a car after a certain number of offenses. I mean if we can make laws that "infringe" upon a convicted felon's "second amendment right" to bear arms, we can make a law that restricts access to motor vehicles. Cars in the hands of the intoxicated are deadly weapons and killed nearly 17,000 people in 2005 alone (insert obligatory comment about the number of US soldiers killed in the Iraq War, or on September 11, 2001). If we can keep the worst offenders away from motor vehicles, maybe we can reduce the number of alcohol-related fatalities. 2. Impose criminal penalties for allowing a known repeat offender to operate a vehicle in your possession. In my mind, this is similar to laws that we have in place concerning the provision of alcohol to minors. Law enforcement doesn't just penalize the offending minors; they can also penalize those who provided the alcohol in the first place. And so it is with cars and repeat DUI offenders. 3. The Wisconsin State Journal cites South Dakota law that allows repeat offenders to drive if they submit to Breathalyzer tests twice daily with the sheriff. I'm not sure that the article makes it clear, but the South Dakota law is a so-called "24/7 sobriety" zero-tolerance law. That is, a person can get a special permit to operate a motor vehicle so long as they get tested, pay the expenses of the testing, and consume absolutely no ethanol. The detection of any amount of alcohol necessarily revokes that individual's right to operate a motor vehicle. However unlikely, it may be possible to fool a Breathalyzer. Google helped me find all sorts of tricks for beating a Breathalyzer including breathing heavily before analysis, eating shit, and sucking on activated charcoal. My scientific training and an episode of Mythbusters has me doubting the effectiveness of any way to cheat the test. To obviate any technique for fooling a Breathalyzer analysis, blood samples should be randomly collected from program participants. I'm not sure that measure three would stop Dworak from driving, seeing as how he wasn't deterred by having his license revoked by a preponderance of repeat offenses. So while this 24/7 sobriety program offers a legal road map to obtaining a driving permit, it is insufficient to keep the worst offenders from driving because they will do so with or without a permit. Still, I regard this as a significant step forward. cialis generic viagra online buy cilais viagra

Economics of Climate Change

These two subjects alone are big enough to devote entire careers to, and I imagine this won't be the last time they're mentioned here on my blog. I still meet far too many people (one is really too many) that think human activity is not having a significant effect on the climate, or that any environmental protection or consideration for ecological preservation comes at the expense of the economy. I hope this post will help to 'clear the air' on this subject. I know; greenhouse gasses and air pollution are two different subjects, but I couldn't resist the play on words. After mulling over the options, I chose to start off with climate change denial , and save the exciting stuff - economics - for later.
