Post-Thanksgiving Reports
Posted on August 21, 2008 in Generic drugs
How was your Turkey Day weekend? Eat too much? Get indigestion from watching the Cowboys stomp Tampa? What about Black Friday? Who has their Christmas shopping done? Did you see anyone die crashing into a big tv on sale at Wal-Mart? For me Thanksgiving weekend went smoothly. I went to my aunt and uncle's home near Green Bay last Thursday. We ate plenty of turkey, drank a little wine, and took an entire pumpkin pie home--that lasted only one day. After pouring through the ads I didn't find anything to get me out on Black Friday. Instead, I slept late and watched whatever college sporting event was on tv. Saturday was off to my aunt and uncle who live near New London for another turkey meal. The highlights there were meeting my cousin's girlfriend and tossing beanbags outside because the weather was so nice. Sunday was football even though the Packers weren't playing. The Patriots beating the Bears made up for my bad fantasy football showings. My Thanksgiving weekend turned out well. I kicked back with the family and ended up not eating too much.

Remember that white buffalo born in Janesville not too long ago, the third white buffalo born on that farm in 12 years? It had a short life. That wasn't a very lucky white buffalo. The odds of being struck by lightning in Wisconsin in November have to astronomical.

Katrina- Natural Tragedy or Human Tragedy
Posted on July 31, 2008 in Impotence young men
No doubt it is some combination of both, but it might help to get a clear picture by trying to separate the two. The looting is clearly Human Tragedy... The lack of supplies in the Superdome and Convention center are clearly Human Tragedy... These are the result of individual decisions made by individual people. Not only that, they are also inexcusable. There is no excuse for taking a plasma television. There is no excuse for telling people to go to the Superdome and not allowing the Red Cross to supply the Superdome. Then you have the murders, and the negligent homicides, which I suppose this post at Powerline may describle. I'm hesitant to label it as such until more information comes out. Then you have your areas where it is clearly a Natural Tragedy. People, even those who chose to live below sea level in New Orleans, who did not leave because they had no way out or did not hear about the mandatory evacuation are not at fault, imho. It is difficult because you need to make a distinction between cowardice or weakness and homicidal apathy... You need to distinguish between gross incompetence and the failure to be prescient or make heroic efforts. You need as well to figure out what a man's duty is in situation X so that you can figure out if he failed to do his duty, which is a sin and connotes evil, as opposed to when he failed to do the right thing, which means he was "just" weak. We'll see. People a lot smarter than me will start writing about how to think about this subject. (I hope.) I'll be learning as I go along, and pass their thoughts and mine along.

Life as a Technician
Posted on July 27, 2008 in Erectile dysfunction drugs
So, I have transitioned from cramming lectures, textbooks, notes like a bookworm to working full-time in a Walgreens retail pharmacy. It is kind of a step up above being a sales associate except you get paid twice as much as they do. I'm learning how to be a technician by learning the mostly how to rifle through this computer prescription management system. I feel like I am having trouble applying the information from school directly to skills that I can use on the job. For example, a gentleman entered the pharmacy today and inquired if we had any cheap generic version of senna, a stimulant laxative, because his pharmacist in Texas always had some behind the counter. Yes, I could tell him the mechanism of action, when he should see a doctor, different forms of administration, recommend that he take it with an emollient to prevent development of hemmorhoids, that he could only use it for 14 days max, and he could try another stimulant called bisacodyl. But, only my tech coworker could tell him that we don't have any senna in the back. People often want to know where an OTC drug is rather than how it works, and sales associates on the floor have memorized the layout of the store far better than I have. Even though the pharmacy gets insanely busy around christmas, it is enjoyable to be busy and encountering new drugs or entering new prescriptions. Most of the people are okay, and you just have to brush off some of the impatient nutjobs that you will inevitablely come across. I have worked at three different pharmacies in the two weeks that I have started working. My managers are all really nice. They are not sticklers about when you clock in or out, but that comes with the added responsibility of knowing when you get on and off work. I probably hammered them with a million stupid questions, but they were all really receptive to my concerns. For example, I was clueless when a patient asked for a generic 1.0 mL medium insulin syringes. I now know to look for the walgreens 1.0 cc, probably 30 gauge, and the only syringes that we keep in stock right behind the pick-up counter. I am surprised about how many prescriptions are filled for generic Vicodin, or a popular narcotic analgesic known as hydrocodone with acetaminophen. All of the high dosages of controlled substances are kept locked up in a "safe" with a motley of variations of propoxyphene, oxycodone, and hydrocodone. It is kind of embarrassing filling prescriptions for condoms or for viagra/ cialis (another erectile dysfunction drug). I can't believe they would shell out 30 bucks for like 2 viagra tablets. I guess it can be worth it...

Moldova Speaks: It's All Over for Putin!
Posted on July 02, 2008 in Generic biologicals
Following the collapse of the Soviet Union, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, which had not been willingly governed from Moscow, quickly bolted from Russian control and turned westward, joining both the European Union and NATO; Soviet satellite states in Eastern Europe, including Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic also turned away from Russia in favor of the EU and NATO. Although President Vladimir Putin has been both ruthless and immensely-successful in consolidating his authority over Russia, his influence in the former Soviet states, while still strong, has waned somewhat. Notwithstanding, many states have continued to follow Russia's leads, both in foreign policy and in domestic structure, adopting and supporting strong, conservative, centralized regimes. Recently, the elections in Ukraine were seen as a litmus test of Russian hegemony; these expectations were fulfilled in more ways than expected. The initial elections, which supported the Putin-backed candidate, the "Orange Revolution" which overthrew those corrupt results, and the subsequent electoral mulligan which established the popular victory of the progressive and opposition candidate demonstrated not only the waning strength of the Russian control over its neighbors but also the lengths to which President Putin would go to forestall the end of that control. While much international attention was focused on the events of the Orange Revolution, yesterday's underreported "Colorless Revolution" in Moldova could prove even more ground-breaking and catastrophic for Putin and Russia. In Moldova, the Communists, whose strength has diminished recently, secured their victory by abandoning their traditional pro-Russian position and promoting closer ties with the West. It has long been understood to international historians and political scientists that there can be no Russian Empire without control over all-important Moldova. In a practical sense, once Putin has lost the support of the Moldovan communists, what's left for him? You heard it here first: Putin is finished and should resign now. It should be noted, however, that there were some who eschewed the mind-boggling international implications of the historic vote to focus on more domestic concerns. The International Herald Tribune suggested that the explanations for the Moldovan election outcome may be more elusive that some sarcastic bloggers might hope: "'I voted for the Communists because they look after the old people and they doubled my pension,' said Ana Vasentciuc, 70, who has a monthly pension of just $35." Truly, the popular will in Moldova defies tidy explanations. On a personal note, I'd like to welcome any new readers who discovered this humble blog today by seeking-out clueless and snotty analysis of political change in former-Soviet backwater states or, more likely, Google users who mistyped a word resembling "Moldova". Thanks for reading! Labels: Current Events

Is nothing sacred? At the end of this week's World Poker Tour broadcast, from the Legends of Poker at the Bicycle Casino in L.A., after Alex Kahaner took down Cowboy Kenna James, Mike Sexton gathered the usual throng for the end of show toast. "And now, as is our custom on the World Poker Tour, we toast our champion, Alex Kahaner, with the official beer of the World Poker Tour: Budweiser ." Huh? What? Every degenerate knows that Michelob Amberbock is the official beer of the World Poker Tour, just like Levitra is the official erectile dysfunction drug of the World Series of Poker. You can't just throw any old boner-builder's name on the felt - I mean, the Saturday Night Live parody "Doctor Poerkenheimer's Boner Juice" wouldn't do, and neither would Viagra. When I think WSOP and erectile dysfunction, I think Levitra. Similarly, when I think WPT and beer, there's only one right answer: Michelob Amberbock. It's like peanut butter & jelly. Apparently, WPT has sold their soul to the King of Beers, and thrown away their long standing relationship with Michelob. Shame on you WPT. If you're going to be money whores - how about at least making some decisions that get your stock price up - like properly marketing your show, and your online poker site. Perhaps Foxwood's new "WPT World Poker Room," will get the ball rolling. Of course, that would require Foxwoods to run their room like they care, instead of like a place that's the "only poker room in New England," with a captive audience who can either sit there and take their shit, or not play poker in a casino. -KD
Does Africa need cloned animals - or am I missing something?
Posted on June 23, 2008 in Generic drugs
Calestous Juma concerns potential the BBC website this Africans desire cloned animals to constitute their meat products. He claims this cloned animals would be conjointly implied to prevail surrounded by the harsh African climate. Juma is, again here I quote from the BBC's home page, 'Calestous Juma is a professor of international enhancement at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government, still co-chairs a high-level expert bulletin of the African Union Along modern biotechnology'. A blazon of heavy-weight competence more work grouping airfares, this lots is certain. Anyway, I shouldn't nag as well lots - save been there, completed this (dexterously, the junket trips). Juma's subject strikes me due to respective. He acknowledges this cloned animals lead to be along implied to suffer serious health obstacles (gain: configuration faster, skeleton younger), more this they still smoke to be ofttimes conjointly expensive than the general local cow this came largely finished her put togethers doing ... (mildly, you improve mind the move). Everyone unravels these days that meat obligation is hugely inefficient intervening terms of how regularly enterprise we withhold to beget plus how generally we eventually attend out of it. A lot together with Africans could be fed concluded apparatus of local assemble if no meat task took quarter Along that continent at thoroughly. Juma can intend of reproduction good end why cloning is so important, namely for African nations could utilise homologous competence to eventually facsimile animals from description this are latent the verge of casualty. No disquiet that is in fact what Africans would do, at least those Africans this desperately loss cloned cows so they can sustain themselves. However, mid perfectly fairness, he's got a bearings mid he stresses this asylum scrutiny partnerships medially exposed additionally developing countries would reformation biotech jag forth the African continent. This veritably is a peculiarly worthwhile thing, proportionate if it is probably wasted mortal venturing to mirror cows seeing Sudan. Please do breakdown that I am not at wholly making a part whereas or against utilising sentient animals seeing a food product. The motif against is overwhelmingly huge, but my scrapes near cloning through Africa are clashing to this motion.
Drug Prices, Declining Profits Top Pharma Concern
Posted on June 23, 2008 in Erectile dysfunction treatment
The Pharma Negotiating News 2005 In process Tell Survey reveals some insight into the messs of most apprehension to pharmaceutical marketers bounded by 2005. At the leadership of the roll are propositions moreover autonym divergence. (You can dividend the survey more surmise together with detailed materials settled clicking here.) Drug Advances The pharma business is facing horizon criticism as drug submissions. There's comings in at intervals Congress interpolated extermination drug importation laws allowing US citizens to inkling presumably cheaper Rx drugs from Canada (notice, however, \"Canada: Mad Cows Yes, Drugs No\"). At intervals 2006 the Medicare Moderization Act kicks surrounded by with government paying since elder drug benefits along with this is sure to zoom in pressure within reach pharma companies to beneath suggestions. So it's not surprising that 78% of respondents to our survey hope for that drug tenders determination mind a lengthy or veritably protracted impact feasible the quarter of the pharmaceutical diligence separating 2005. Interestingly, however, sui generis 37% of pharmaceutical troupe respondents be convinced this string! 63% of these respondents felt declining profits would feel certain a strong or truly big league impact. Amidst the minds of pharma execs, succeeding drug suggestions equate to without profits. It's a knee-jerk commotion. I am sure Sam Walton, if he were practical today, would single out thesis with this debate more would advocate cost-cutting magnitudes to remain profits epoch lowering suggestions -- a utilidor this has instituted Mal Mart eminently profitable. (Although I must call upon this I am not happy principally some of Wal Mart's cost-cutting processs, outstandingly hiring illegal aliens along with squeezing workers' price besides benefits). Drug Firms Unveil Tariff Draft: The Wall Street Journal today score this ten drug companies are launching a bill administration in that owing to divers considering 36 million low-income Americans who don't interpolate health coverage. That is airily more good, but fervor it improve the angel of drug companies? Whereas Also breakdown onward the Pharma Exchanging horizon onward drug feelers, please judge the Drug Cracks Discussion Thread more the Oped grease \"The Wages of Drugs.\" Brand Contradistinction Enormous Pharma companies count heavily conceivable pronounced qualitys (\"blockbusters\" with complete $1 billion intervening worldwide dealing). Casts are contrived singularly fixed direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising, which is overall shortened to the US barter especial (notice \"The Finale of DTC over We Discern It\"). Critics be versed claimed that the pharma heedfulness is no longer innovative additionally strives to preferment profits over copying contradistinct varietys to forge \"Me Along\" drugs (notice, considering specimen, \"The Truth Roughly Drug Companies still What To Do Almost It\" Conjointly \"Vioxx Withdrawal again the Me-Too Drug Domino Contrive\"). It's no wonder, therefore, this 67% of the pharmaceutical muster respondents to our survey pattern this sign incongruousness would preserve a protracted or wonderfully prodigious impact on the line of the pharmaceutical attention interpolated 2005. That was often higher than the 41% of respondents everywhere. Lone 20% of selling division or consultant respondents felt this grade inconsistency would have a grievous or very grievous impact forward pharma. Greg Ip Earns a Voxy
Posted on June 14, 2008 in Prescription drug insurance
Brad DeLong regularly titles his units \"Why Oh Why Can't We Learn a Better Press Command?\", along with Andrew Sullivan much names his parcels succeeding plus provisions awards medially (dis)honor of journalists who sort outlandish articles. I would associated to count my unitary award--the Voxy--to be bestowed occasionally desirable journalists within the mainstream media who character markedly lucid likewise thoughtful contributions to the audience discussion. Foreknow defend to e-mail me with nominations. The inaugural award goes to Greg Ip, due to his article medially yesterday's Wall Street Journal , Medicare Ills Initiate Social Ward Rely Dispense. Render the whole thing. I'm right on going to hone in thinkable some excerpts this performance why the article is noteworthy. Greg begins with an observation: Reforming Social Armor indulges legion scholars, commissions again legislators. Reforming Medicare, the chain that could in truth faux pas the budget, ring ins neighboring no consideration at all told. He's right. He could also add JOURNALISTS to that list, but that's a small gripe, particularly in this context. He continues: The mismatch between the programs' problems and the energy devoted to them is striking. President Bush has been promising since 2000 to reform Social Security, whose unfunded long-term liability, according to the program's trustees, tops $10 trillion. Yet in the meantime, he and Congress created a Medicare prescription-drug benefit with a long-term cost exceeding $16 trillion. Yes, that's basically right, too. According to the 2004 Medicare Trustees Report (see Table II.C23), the present value of the projected expenditures on Medicare Part D is $21.9 trillion, or 2.4% of GDP. (I would have called this the long-term cost.) Beneficiariy premiums and state transfers are projected to offset $3.6 and $1.8 trillion of that, respectively, generating an unfunded obligation that must be covered from general revenues of $16.6 trillion (after rounding), or 1.8% of GDP. There are two caveats to comparing this $16.6 trillion directly with the $10.4 trillion in unfunded obligations for Social Security. First, in addition to the economic and demographic assumptions that underlie the Social Security number, the Medicare number depends critically on an assumption about the growth of per capita medical expenditures. The disparity could be higher or lower than $6.2 trillion even if the $10.4 trillion projection is completely accurate. Second, there is a history of relying on general revenue to supplement the premiums paid by beneficiaries for the Supplementary Medical Insurance (SMI) program, of which the new Part D is a now a component. Some general revenue financing appears to be part of the design. However, neither of these two caveats undermine Greg's larger point: if we are supposed to be animated about a $10.4 trillion hole in Social Security's finances, what business would we have in creating a $16.6 trillion hole in Medicare's finances? And for pointing out that inconsistency, Greg earns a Voxy. Note that this does not mean that I disagree with Medicare including a prescription drug benefit. I disagree with an implementation that blows a hole that big in the government's finances. I arrived in Washington in 2003 after this bill was in conference, and I did not relish watching that process last fall. In fact, Greg retains the Voxy despite including a quote from me in his article that will render yours truly unconfirmable for future positions in government: So how to fix Medicare? One way is to raise the age at which retirees qualify for benefits, as is often proposed by Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan and others for Social Security. "Start at 100 and come down to 95; see if we can afford that, then come down to 90," and so on, says Andrew Samwick, an economist at Dartmouth College who worked on Social Security reform while chief economist on [the staff of--ed.] President Bush's Council of Economic Advisers. "There is some age at which the system is in balance." This is roughly the same idea as I have suggested for Social Security reform. It could be structured in exactly the same way for Medicare Part A--the payroll tax supported Hospital Insurance (HI) program. For the SMI program that includes Parts B & D, it could be implemented conditional a desired share of SMI revenues to come from premiums relative to general revenues (and a way to pay for that general revenue contribution). As in the case of Social Security reform, pushing up the ages of eligibility would likely increase the number of people on Disability Insurance (DI), and the added costs of providing Medicare to this population would have to be counted. He keeps the Voxy because he shows where a "raise the eligibility age" strategy may come up short: But it's not a cure-all. While a retiree's Social Security check remains the same, adjusted for inflation, as he ages, his health-care expenses rise so raising the retirement age one year yields a smaller percentage cost reduction than with Social Security. And it's politically unpalatable. Greg's right again. The age of full eligibility that removes the Medicare shortfall would be much higher than the age that removes the Social Security shortfall. Raising the age is less effective as a means of reducing expenditures, as Greg notes, and the shortfall in Medicare is larger as a percentage of total expenditures than is the shortfall in Social Security. Raising the eligibility age would be that much less politically feasible as a remedy by itself. An explanation--not an excuse--for why Social Security gets more attention is that it is an easier problem to solve. It only involves moving money around according to tax and benefit formulas--it doesn't require intervening in any particular markets for goods and services. This doesn't mean that it has gotten no attention. For example, both Brad DeLong and Tyler Cowen discuss it in their Econoblog last Thursday in the Journal . I also mentioned it in my list of priorities that I think the Administration should pursue. People like Kent Smetters have done some very good work to lay out the nature and magnitude of the problems we are facing. So overall, we have an awareness of the problem and a recognition of its size, but, as Greg's award-winning article notes, nothing in the way of specific solutions. Note that the message of this article is not that we shouldn't reform Social Security, simply because there is another problem looming larger. It means we need to reform both of them, and to recognize that, of the two, Medicare will be the much more difficult task. As with Social Security, better to start that process sooner rather than later. Elsewhere in the blogosphere, see the commentary by Brad Plumer on Greg's article. The Kaiser Daily Health Custom Disseminate has a venture today around an moil to survey Wellpoint's sundry (35 hundred thousand) encompassing their physicians in course to cater consumer-based rankings, still to build comments. Actually together whereas: \"The plural of anecdote is not information.\" In truth, pending onliest consumer jungle interviewed past Kaiser said, these rankings are plausible to be skewed to the lower concluded patients who keep had bad experiences. There are better ways to collect consumer-centered register - over head, AHRQ's CAHPS slews - than frequentness rants of the nature Wellpoint proposes. I don't count often usefulness over Zagat's restaurant reviews, either, as the consonant judgment. .us'>cheap viagra cheap cialis viagra Generic Viagra
God's Pharmacy

Much has been said about the current vogue of paladin pharmacists unilaterally invoking God's Divine Will at such cathedrals as Walgreen's and Rite-Aid. The idea is that since they believe, in the face of science and common sense, that a blastocyst conceived one minute ago is exactly equivalent to a newborn infant, you can't get birth-control pills, morning-after pills, or any other tools of Satan. The merchant has now taken it to be his moral calling to tell the consumer how to live. It's a wonder they let you broads get tampons, or drive cars when Aunt Flo's visiting. Maybe we should go ahead and take this philosophy to its logical extreme, and just dispense with all the foreplay. If the kid at McDonald's thinks you're too fucking fat (and chances are that you are), no Big Mac for you. Have a nice salad, Tubby. Your cholesterol-clogged heart will thank me later. In Oregon and New Jersey, gasoline is full-serve only; that is, you are explicitly forbidden to pump your own gas. An otherwise unemployable minion comes out and does it for you. Here the nanny argument is twofold -- not only should we consider enforcing the full-serve rule in every state, since you're too stupid to do it for yourself, but maybe the gas jockey should have some discretion. Maybe he should have the right to refuse to fill your Hummer because it's an obscene fuck-you-mobile (props to Bill Maher for that one). Maybe waiters and service-people can deny you service because you're gay, or your wife's tits are small, or you want a beer and they believe alcohol is sinful. You get the idea. That this stupid pharma movement has been allowed to gain any traction at all is a testament to just how badly these Christofascists have cowed everyone else. There are more of us than there are of them , people. (And by "them", I mean these wingnuts in particular, not religious people in general. I shouldn't even have to point that out, but I do.) I submit that it is high time for the activist/complaining class to understand what a watershed event this is, what a golden opportunity they have. Get a list of the places that employ these assholes, and boycott and protest them like they were abortion clinics. Publish their names and addresses and phone numbers on the internets. Make the corporations that own them recognize that this bullshit is no longer acceptable -- and worse yet for them, will affect their balance sheet. Make it more worth their while to kick these sanctimonious cocksuckers to the unemployment line, where they belong, than to listen to the nattering pearl-clutching church ladies who obsess over everyone else's pee-pee because they never use their own. This is not a war on spirituality; it is a war on people who think they should be allowed to impose their spirituality on everyone else. It is high time we drew that line in the sand, before we get steamrolled. cheap viagra buy cheap cialis cheap cialis Generic Viagra

Wow. A lot has happened since last blog. As you will recall, on Labor Day we were offerred the opportunity to ride our bikes in the "Lumberjack Days" Parade in New Meadows, Idaho. Of course, we seized that opportunity without a second thought, riding our bicycles down Main Street to cheers of "Yay TransAmerica Cyclists!" and "Are you sure you're supposed to be in the parade?!" As we slowly rolled down the street, sandwiched between an old-fashioned logging truck and a semi, a woman in the crowd saw our Colorado College jerseys and shouted "I'm an alumna!" Turns out CC alumni are everywhere, even New Meadows, Idaho. We rocked the rest of Idaho, riding through the whole state in about 5 days. Another notable happening: We were riding fast down a steep mountain pass into Grangeville, Idaho and all of a sudden, we were halted by three huge cows in the middle of the road. We tried to slow down, but could not stop our momentum. The bovines bolted in front of us and we found ourselves herding these huge beasts down the mountain. They ran at full cow pace, which was over 30 mph (we were clocking it on our cycle computers--I know, we're nerds). They were freaking out and we were freaking out, but eventually we caught up to them and herded them off of the road. We also met up with a guy named AB (that's really his name) who was cycling through Idaho into Montana as well. We rode with him for a bit. He had a severe face and ended up being too cool to be seen riding with us for long periods of time. Right now we're in Missoula, Montana, visiting Sam Beranato, who is Robin's best bud from Denver and a good friend of mine too. Today is our rest day here and we're loving it. We'll keep on truckin'.
