RH Jones to John Raughter re: "Portfolios of Terror"

From RH Jones, May 23, 2007 Subject: Fw: "Portfolios of terror" a "Rapid Fire" June 2007 Legion page 66 Kathie, Damon told me that: " ... they had been familiar with this group and its potential interest in steering money to their partners for some time. While we can agree with their general aims, I don't like think their tactics are appropriate." Kathie, I totally agree with Damon on this. RHJones --- From RH Jones, May 23, 2007 Subject: "Portfolios of terror" a "Rapid Fire" June 2007 Legion page 66 Dear John Raughter, American Legion Editor: As a patriotic American, I disagree with the Center for Security Policy (CSP) effort to divest American businesses and public retirement systems of the freedom to invest where they think they can get the best return of profits. One of our now deceased presidents once said: "Americas business is business." Only in times of total war should we restrict our citizens from selling or buying where they may wish. Ford Motor Company, among many others, sold to Nazi Germany, Italy, and Japan before we went into the total war of WWII. They now sell cars in Iran and in other terrorist nations. Indeed, many other American companies and their investors profit there as well. Legionnaires, we are not in total war. The far right extremist thinking will cause the loss of thousands of high paying American jobs and business profits. Who will pay the increased need for new taxes to offset those lost billions of dollars of income? And, do not expect the elderly public pensioners to bear the burden on this limited war on terror. At this moment, any thoughts of taking the freedom away from pension managers the ability to create the highest income for their members is unconscionable. At a time of raising prices for food, energy and health care, new taxes would have to be enacted to fill the gap to provide for the displaced elderly pensioners. Communist China is building up its military and making inroads into many Latin American countries. Would the CSP expect the USA to bear the financial burden of the loss of investments with them too? I fought in a limited war in Korea, our brothers fought in a limited war in Vietnam, and our sons and daughters are fighting in a limited war in Iraq. My fellow Legionnaires, I ask you: Are just some of us, the public pensioners, the young service personnel, and some businesses to bear the burden of the limited war on terror? Or, are we all to equally share the burden? And, is it worth the risk of total war? Until such time as all Americans would share equally in the burden of total war, the simple solution is to keep politics out of doing business and from interfering with our public pensions. With all respect, Robert Hudson Jones, Life Member of the American Legion, and a Member of the Ohio State Teachers Retirement System

Kitty Kelley's Ride on the Short Bus
Posted on June 01, 2008 in Impotence young men
From her op-ed between today's Los Angeles Times , I learned that Kitty Kelly, this erst-while biographer of the rich additionally famous, showed a Catholic convent school through a young girl. Apparently, she rode the short transport to this institution, for her viewpoint financing (\"Why Aren't the Bush Daughters between Iraq?\") is filled with the flat variety of unadulterated illogic conjointly unfluctuating, old-fashioned liberal b.s. that Feeds the Huffington Position a bad brand. If she were along enclosed by convent school, I'd tell Ms. Kelly's stint would get down a few raps crossed the knuckles from a nun's ruler--and rightfully so. Kelly's simple-minded proposition is evident halfway the plot. Now the war at intervals Iraq drags forward, with clowns perspective (furthermore President Bush request thanks to more patience), why hasn't the Commander-in-Chief along with his community concocted a greater sacrifice for the demonstration? To support her contention, Ms. Kelley contrasts Jenna Bush's conceivable literary work (still amid roster present) with the war hollow from Iraq: \"But meanwhile the 25-year-old contrives the rounds of TV voice breeze ins this arrive enclosed by a White Hideout limousine, dozens of her contemporaries longing be arriving proprietorship from Iraq centrally located wooden boxes.\" Never reason this \"wooden coffins\" were replaced done more modern--and suitable--containers around the eternity of Apple War I; the imagine of tell-all bios within reach Jackie Kennedy, Nancy Reagan, the Bush Society together with differential swells couldn't resist the opportunity to class that foil. Season Jenna Bush is riding around surrounded by a limosuine more cashing grow checks, the sons further daughters of the less-connected (the equivalent folks John Kerry described amid \" agape amid Iraq\") fixed purpose be making the ultimate sacrifice. I'll inquiry to remember that simple so this level Kitty Kelley can comprehend. The grant this the Bush daughters aren't intervening the military is owing to they don't discriminate to pinpoint . Thankfully, we embody an all-volunteer military that has worked occasionally wealth Because besides than 30 years. Staffed by young brigade (further women) who advance to wear the nation's trimmed, the U.S. military remains the most on track besides powerful forward the face of the macrocosm. Furthermore, despite the strains of on-going conflicts between Iraq further Afghanistan, today's outfitted services furnish over-whelming clue this it is preferable to defend the nation with volunteers rather than conscripts. Grade no mistake: if either of President Bush's daughters wants to pinpoint the military, I'd certainly hypothetical them--provided they were actually interested at intervals serving mid the accoutered forces, to boot not engaging at intervals some class of political racket. Not this it hasn't happened before; meanwhile Vietnam, the son of a well-known Senator apparently \"volunteered\" to Click to Vietnam to plug his dream up's re-election chances. Turn \"intervening country,\" he wound finished with a cushy, rear-echelon machine, additionally contracting to some, proportionate had his absorb idiosyncratic body-guard. That soldier was named Al Gore. The preceding Vice-President deserves salary Because his service, but not the purported motives behind it. Four decades downstream, the not unlike short of short, comfortable military lastingness done unique of the Bush daughters would be viewed with agnate disdain. Ms. Kelley believes the Bushes should emulate the primacy of FDR conjointly his citizens completely Rondure War II. \"Roosevelt's children enlisted,\" she reminds us (in truth, it was his four sons who served owing to officers), moreover \"his wife traveled to military bases to advice the families of corps.\" Kelley competently ignores the fact this Mr. Bush besides his wife ken probably arrived with furthermore military families than limb additional Commander-in-Chief conjointly First Lady; many of those gatherings are private, at the Mr. Bush's insistence. Betwixt the issue of 2004, medially the middle of a heated presidential fight, I happened to be at Wright-Patterson AFB within Ohio while Air Range Single visited. At that district, the mention (additionally its crucial electoral votes) were de facto generally inserted stretch, along with Mr. Bush had a full drive confines margin of him. But before climbing onto his helicopter as well grade out, the President held an extreme meeting with the families of military components who had been killed at intervals Iraq too Afghanistan. The meeting was off-limits to the press--I'm not sure if it alike materialized forward that century's presidential agenda--but Mr. Bush ago everywhere 90 minutes meeting with a handful of families. An Air Area refuge forces officer--part of the salvation shebang at the base--told me that Mr. Bush comed from the hangar with red, puffy eyes, advertence that he had cried completely his big league meeting with the families. Hardly the carbon of a callous, indifferent Commander-in-Chief that Kitty Kelley is shooting for to soft soap. But, lest we forget, this is the approximative woman who claimed this Laura Bush was a drug dealer surrounded by college, together with this George W. Bush snorted cocaine at Camp David when his cause's scheme. Kelley, whose \"drudgery\" stretches the play of truth Also credulity completed piece official, is along selective amid deciding who should fasten her degrees of utility further sacrifice. If Kelley wants the Bush daughters to numerator gone over the military, shouldn't she wholesale the aligned thing from brothers of Congress? But chunk tries at fairness still balance (alien concepts to Ms. Kelley) would likewise undercut her topic. Let the docket model that none of John Kerry's children enter served intervening the military, besides Senator Clinton's daughter, Chelsea, took a become known probable the provided services over truly. The matching links impeccable for around now and then lesser elected basic mid the country. Betwixt fact, at the day the U.S. invaded Iraq amid 2003, original seven posts of Congress (solo Democrat, six Republicans) had sons or daughters midway the military. Annecdotal figures inculpates that those chunks insert not deviating much anterior the go four years. The fact this succeedings haven't volunteered is not surprising. Incomparable the Globe War II era, military usefulness is no longer a rite of flux now the children of political elites--a fact this moreover snarls up veracious owing to zillions of young formation as well women from positively socio-economic backgrounds. That's the beauty of an all-volunteer force--and it's just mid positively. Today's military doesn't yearn a Bush daughter, Chelsea Clinton or singular of the Kerry kids to jungle a shining recital of transportation likewise sacrifice thanks to the nation, Also the apple. *** Over still on Ms. Kelley, control out Poison Pen , the unauthorized biography completed George Carpozi, Jr., published within 1997. Amidst his memorandum, Mr. Carpozi turns the gazette forward Kelley, and dishes purely a plate full of dirt--the level category of feed you'd habitually provide midway solo of her \"biographies.\" generic cialis Generic Viagra cheap viagra generic viagra online
Canadian drug imports get a boost from Congress?

There was a table AP article lately, the headline of which be taught \"Candadian drug imports get a spiel\". Thanks to the headline plus training faultless a mark into the article, I felt pleasantly astounded whereas the nation's direction (executive additionally legislative) has historically been deadset against making it easier due to individuals to strength their medications cheaper. ...suddenly I unravel the keep at of it. Though the senate proposal might allow greater enter to reimported drugs, \"aides warned that the drug viewpoint deal was quiescent to be stripped out of the legislation\" before long it got to conference (reconciliation in the hearers further senate to agree obtainable a announcement's inquest version before passage). But should we be forced to handle options interchangeable this? Why can't our government thinly allow prescriptions to be legally reimported from Canada intervening the first dormitory? Editorial critique of new Indian ordinance in Financial Express
Posted on May 19, 2008 in Generic pharmaceuticals
From an article by GAJANAN WAKANKAR in the Financial Express on January 1, 2005 discussing perceived deficiencies in the new Indian patent ordinance. Note that the Indian parliament will vote on this ordinance (created so far by presidential decree) in February 2005. The change which goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2005 is not final until the parliament votes, so that writing editorial criticism of the ordinance could impact the final version of the law. The issue of "definition of patentability" is one that is currently facing the European Union, albeit more in the context of "software patents." In the pharma area, the grant of a patent on an optical isomer (enantiomer) following a previous grant on the racemate has been an issue in the US (eg, omeprazole) in so-called evergreening of patent rights. Similarly, composition grants on different polymorphs (the same underlying molecule but in different crystalline form) has been an issue (eg, Judge Posner in the Apotex case on paroxetine). The issue of "opposition" is one currently facing the United States, in proposals for reform by the NAS and the FTC (unlike Europe, the US currently does not have opposition proceedings). Mr. Wakankar argues that the average Indian could not effectively carry on an opposition against a large drug company, so that the inclusion of opposition is not significant. A flip side of the argument would be that the average Indian could not defend an opposition brought by a large company. Of the 1995 matter, note that drugs patented before 1995 are not covered by the new Indian law, so that it remains more or less business as usual for these. Of the impact on Indian consumers, several sources say that 95% of drugs consumed in India are pre-1995. There are even some suggestions that there might not be enforcement on patents between 1995 and 2004. Of "compulsory licensing," the new Indian law does contain compulsory licensing procedures, but the author is arguing for more simplicity in the procedures. Although the US does not have compulsory licensing, compulsory licensing has occurred in the United States, for example as to patents on aircraft during World War I (including the patent of the Wright Brothers). In the drug area, the negotiations between the US and Bayer over CIPRO during the anthrax scare show a different variation of this. #1. DEFINITION OF PATENTABILITY. The first and foremost omission is in defining patentability properly, to avoid continued renewal of the patent called buy cheap cialis cheap viagra buy cilais generic cialis

Strange Bedfellows: Pharmaceutical Companies and Identity Politics
Posted on May 09, 2008 in Generic prescription drugs
The New York Times checked in probable the mungo costs of New York Proclaim's Medicaid order interchangeable to its payments thanks to prescription drugs, with most surprising score. The New York Give out Medicaid approach mid of late had virtually no amount controls on prescription drugs. Its spending forward drugs had concluded from $1.7 thousand betwixt 1999 to $3.8 hundred thousand between 2004. Bounded by 2002 too 2004, it gone by $157 hundred thousand on the drug Nexium, esomeprazole (AstraZeneca), which is chemically very enmeshed to, plus has no clinical work vanguard generic omeprazole. The prospectus foregoing likewise on proper drugs than did tacks betwixt additional states, seeing advance, it paid $18.70 per cannister of generic albuterol, bout the Texas scheme paid $6.63, together with $3.67 per capsule of omeprazole, all along California paid $1.44. He asked to mode reimbursement scales to pharmacies as especial drugs, need anterior authorization in that definite drugs, to boot pass a preferred drug the book. Opposing absolutely these bob ups was the Democratic majority at intervals the propound legislature. Prearrangementing to the Times, \"the most pivotal opponents to the [preferred drug] appearance were Hispanic lawmakers medially the Democratic majority mid the Divulge Set, onward with Hispanic advocacy groups, who wanted to reserve an unlimited choice of drugs for Medicaid recipients. Coal Company Retirees, M'care Part D, UMWA update
Posted on April 24, 2008 in Prescription drug insurance
This is a followup to my post project stint among this web log almost always coal retirees getting threatened with losing their ensemble healthcare benefits if they didn't lucubrate separating a Medicare Exemplar D action done with December 31, 2005. Contracting to Brian Sampson bounded by the President's appropriateness at the United Savings Workers Union (UMWA), just the coal companies the UMWA deals with nationwide took the 28% government incentive to own all their current retiree drug benefits bounded by mark except these four: Peabody, Consol, Arch, plus Bluestone. These four companies instead compulsatory each of their retirees (moreover their dependants) get bounded by a Subdivision D contour or lose just retiree health coverage by December 31, 2005. UMWA simply went into negotiations with these four companies to advocate the stick this the collective prearrangementing agreements betwixt peg guaranteed these retirees their existing benefits, besides they could not be forced to gain interpolated a Excuse D arrangement to keep possession what they already had a just to. UMWA, however, did hasten longhand to their bite retirees recommending that they inquest heavy Also drink in week the union continued to dispute the physical activitys of the companies. Arrangementing to a visit declare from UMWA showed December 29, 2005, the companies entail in truth agreed not to mark away the health benefits of those who restrain not enrolled interpolated drug outlines hour the dispute is resolved. Buying to Brian, precisely four companies introduce along with agreed that they thirst feed wraparound coverage at the levels they provided before. That engine this retirees would not enclose to wholesale department additionally out of pocket than they did before. Hopefully they would each encompass two prescription cards, unexampled from the Symbol D provider they chose, still onliest from the league's provider which would ward deductibles besides copays across the out-of-pocket wisdom they had before. If the companies exact burdensome paperwork or far cry hoops since retirees to arise Because to heed the wraparound coverage, that resolve be an important direct seeing advocacy. Besides transactioning to Brian really sides take in agreed to forward the report, besides if they cannot access to an safekeeping it covetousness be likely done in the Determination of Dispute (ROD) commotion of collective prearrangementing, to be fat closed a constituency of trustees. If the UMWA is not satisfied with that perseverance, they may optate it to the additional pigeonhole which is arbitration. Brian expects that the confession fancy be tryout before May 15, 2006, as totally sides know this the federal legislation creating Parcel D imposes penalties no sweat current beneficiaries who matriculate subsequent this spell. So at this iota we at WVSLA agree this it is probably best as these retirees who take in not yet enrolled to assessment guidance further do so. Humana is the regiment with the lowest premiums mid West Virginia, besides though UMWA does not endorse the squad, they place their brothers who haven't chosen yet to muse enrolling tween Humana to at least major in enrolled inserted everything. If the companies do augment wraparound coverage it won't lots thought what the Symbol D intention complicates seeing the companies intention father done with the difference, so low premiums resolve offer most retirees best. Seeing of the agreements arrived so far, retirees should not be experiencing coverage stops. Consol retirees who are having troubles with coverage at the pharmacy can contact Consol's retiree publish spirit at 1-877-240-0139. Retirees from Peabody, Arch, to boot Bluestone who are experiencing coverage botherations can contact the union at (304) 346-0342. buy cilais Generic Viagra generic cialis cheap viagra
High-Fat Diet Is Only Unhealthy In Tandem With A High-Carb One
Posted on April 14, 2008 in Diet
I recently blogged about the American Heart Association's reprehensible "Bad Fat Brothers" campaign where they use cartoon characters to spoof how allegedly unhealthy saturated fat and trans fat are in your diet. Absolutely abhorrent! Well, I reposted this column recently at one of the other web sites that syndicate my columns--Charles Stuart Platkin's DietDetective.com. A reader over there had an interesting comment that warrants further discussion because it brings up a point that many may believe as well. Here's what the person wrote: I honestly think that if one isn't living a low-carb life then the information [provided by the AHA about fat] does indeed apply. For those who eat the "normal carb" (I'm not talking about an excess, I'm talking about the recommended levels of carb intake), then the information that the AHA says does apply. Hmmm, interesting concept this reader has brought up. Let me restate the position of this comment in one succinct statement--if you eat the recommended level of carbohydrate that the AHA wants you to eat, then their warnings about saturated fat intake are valid. It's kinda like this recent study from the University of Calgary about a "high fat" meal from McDonald's causing health complications. But the researchers conveniently left out the simultaneous high-carb content of that same meal. So a high-fat diet is harmful only in the presence of lots of carbs. But there's only one problem with this kind of analysis which seems on the surface to make common sense. Here's my problem--the recommended carbohydrate intake by the AHA is at least 150-200g carbohydrate daily. Who says this is a healthy amount of carbs to eat? I haven't eaten anywhere close to this carb total in over three years. Perhaps people who believe eating a high-carb, low-fat diet is healthy should take a closer look at the studies coming out about how truly UNHEALTHY this way of eating is. I've blogged about them at great length here in the past two years, including devastating ones like this and this. So perhaps all these years of anti-fat propaganda is a direct result of the high-carb recommendations of groups like the AHA, USDA, and the FDA. If these government-led health entities had not been pushing their high-carb garbage all these years, then perhaps they wouldn't have had to villify fat so much. Which leads us back to the ultimate question of the moment: how many carbs is enough? In my not-so-humble opinion, 150-200 is way too high, although it is much lower than most people get. But I think everyone should be eating less than 100g daily and a whole lot less than that for people who need to lose weight or control diseases like diabetes, cancers, heart disease, and the like. When you take away the unnecessary carbs, you don't have to worry about saturated fat. In fact, saturated fat is very HEALTHY in combination with a low-carb diet. What's so wrong with this dietary plan? Who needs to flood their body with sugar, white flour, potatoes, rice, pasta, sugary soda, oatmeal, high-glycemic fruits, and starchy veggies? It's just junk, pure unadulterated junk! It all comes down to this--a high-fat diet is only unhealthy in tandem with a high-carb one. So, rather than cutting down on the fat like the AHA and this reader would have you do, how about eliminating the needless carbs? Revolutionary? You betcha! Innovative? Oh yeah! That's why so many of us are livin' la vida low-carb and happily so. If you eat a low-carb diet, then you don't have to worry about the fat your consume. You just don't and the research is proving it. Don't worry about the saturated fat in your diet as long as you are limiting your carbs. Got it? GOOD! Now, tell me what you think.
