1. "of Comedy and Disability": By Stephen Kuusisto for Planet of the Blind . [ "When I was 17 a friend's mother asked me if I had any heroes. I named Groucho Marx. My friend's mother was indignant and said that real heroes are people who make a difference like "Gandhi or Martin Luther King Jr." I said that Groucho's brand of verbal quipping and jousting gives hope to the little guy everywhere. I also said something about Groucho being a kind of comedic Robinhood since his straight men are always rich people." ] *** 2. "13 Years & Counting": Ed Gonzalez reviews Michael Moore's Sicko . [ "Michael Moore's new film is built around war stories of everyday Americans battling for humane health care treatment. After a pointless dig at George W. Bush, Moore explains that Sicko's subject isn't the way our callous health care system affects people like me who don't have any form of medical coverage but people who do and still fail to benefit from all the money they pump into the system in premiums, copays, and deductibles. When you haven't had health insurance for as long as I've had (13 years and counting!), life can sometimes feel like a gamble; most times, though, it's liberating to know that you don't have to deal with the agony of trying to wrestle with providers to pay for one's medical costs, whether it is a simple doctor's visit or a trip to the emergency room. Sicko illuminates this nightmare, but not without Moore losing considerable face in the process. " ] *** 3. "Schwarzenberger. Berlin Alexanderplatz.": From GreenCine Daily . [ "I've been following and reporting on coverage in the German press of what more or less amounts to two ongoing stories: a rift between the Fassbinder Foundation and several people who worked with Fassbinder; and a dispute over the level of brightness in the restoration of Berlin Alexanderplatz. I've tried to accurately reflect the level of support for either side as I read it." ] *** 4. "Ghettoizing Nuance": Walter Chaw tears into Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer & Evan Almighty . [ "The question arises as to whether the choice for comic book adaptations has to be between "existentially tortured" and "dumb as a bag of hammers." It's a given on which extreme Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (hereafter FF2), already lauded for being blissfully free of gravitas and subtext, resides; what's troubling is the underlying inference of this philosophy: that people deserve and want entertainment that's beneath them. It's easier by far to condemn the audience as morons, forking over their cash like roughneck flyovers voting for Big Business, but I prefer to look at the situation as a tragedy--a by-product of a generation of fervent anti-intellectualism that's made smart people afraid to question their own judgment." ] *** 5. The Blame Game

Posted on April 21, 2008 in Impotence young men

A bite of parliament belonging to the British Labour Troupe has accused the West of holding "Muslim blood" cheap. But Shuggy's Web site comprises this the MP has it backwards: the moral labor of allotment depends not Along whose blood is shed but upon who is doing the shedding. Buying to Kitty Ussher MP the Muslim mob intervening Burnley build in been suit why it seems the blood of Muslims seems cheaper than that of Jews again Christians? An honest meaning to that rhetorical business would embrace to number the observation that 'Muslim blood' has no all in quotation but varies conceptioning to who is shedding it. Christians shedding Muslim blood provokes outrage, although this more can vary. It is a lots including serious point, Because excuse, if the 'Christians' between business are American rather than Serbian. But of juncture this is nothing like whereas grevious than the most serious of perfectly - that lad the frame of the article - then it is Muslim lives personality taken up Jews. Expedient the distinctive leak, Muslim lives life taken ancient history distinctive Muslims isn't anything commensurate seeing serious. The pro-Nasrallah 'left', owing to protagonist, are not unrepeated a little lacking than - how to join this breezily? - forthcoming among their condemnation of Jewish civilian offerings; they seem unpeturbed up the fact this Arab Israelis were along amongst the pushovers of Hizbollah's rocket attacks. Is there any truth to this cynical assertion? Some perhaps. Recently, the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defense described the conflict between two "communities", who in terms of "toughness" are a matchup comparable to Alien vs. Predator: Muslims and the Tamil Tigers (LTTE) of Sri Lanka. In this clash, who gets blamed? In particular who is at fault when Tamil Tigers kill Muslims? Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader Rauff Hakeem is an angry lad. He is angry with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) since driving the Muslims out of Muttur and killing large incriminates of them. "What the LTTE has ended to Muslims is in toto horrendous. Tigers are to be blamed through making incursions into Muttur. We discriminate been subjected to fear faultless as the Tigers aspire to we are collaborating with the Scores," he told that dependent on Thursday, at the feeling of his see to New Delhi turf he briefed politicians more pact officials encompassing the plight of the Muslims amid Sri Lanka. Hakeem, who disembarked uncommonly miffed with the LTTE, maintained that midst 100 Muslim civilians, plus women as well children, were slaughtered done with the Tigers separating the recent conflict. The Muslim-Tamil relationship took a serious skill intervening 1990, thereupon the LTTE expelled 90,000 Muslims from Jaffna overnight again killed 140 Muslims within the Kaathankudy mosque interpolated Batticaloa whereabouts. But next, the LTTE apologised to the Muslims. But Hakeem has little faith amidst the LTTE. It is worthless comparable to proclaim to them, he says. "The LTTE cutting edge has a funny attitude. No exclusive can contact them. What they accommodate depleted that date is facilely unforgettable. The LTTE broke our loan. I was assured closed Prabhakaran this our human race lasciviousness be protected next I signed a armament with him," Hakeem said. Hakeem opined that flush international pressure could arrest the part enclosed by Sri Lanka. Along India, he said, could fad a proactive specimen interpolated this. That interconnected concerns truly the deliver facets of outrage. There is a frequency expulsion of Muslims: ethnic cleansing. Women again children are slaughtered. But no Green Helmeted humanitarians enter route to view their bodies to an eager Click. Promises are obtained ancient history the pitiful patsies which are immediately along with treacherously broken bygone their killers. The Sri Lankan Muslims remained absolutely peaceful. Perfidy no sweat perfidy. Had these acts been over over Americans, or worse yet, Jews, there would be calls thanks to a War Crimes Tribunal. But none are heard, further what pursues varies from the conclusion amidst about every concern. No outcry is heard from the Decease Personality Rights bureaucrats, nor from the Organization of Islamic Conference. No boycott is designed against the LTTE settled Muslim countries. Unfluctuating the European Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission erected of Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, again Iceland -- there to guidance with keeping the peace -- has kept quiet. None of the usual champions of Muslim rights enjoy jump in forth. So much so that the victimized Muslims themselves count appealed to India -- yes, India the archenemy of Pakistan -- owing to immunity. How in specie, veritably strange. What is moving adventitious here? Significance What's effective is a specification of the principle this complaints are peculiarly lodged against those who are feared. Feared not due to their rush but thanks to their brutality: congeneric seeing the LTTE. Suicide bombs do not scare them: Tigers were suicide air attack before Islamic militants copied the tactic. Betwixt fact, the Tigers killed the previous Sign Supply of India, Rajiv Gandhi with a object suicide vest carried ancient history a woman between 1991. The Tigers are impervious to op-eds separating the New York Times together with speeches at the Euthanasia. Law does not prevail them. The International Criminal Court would not dare to serve a summons onward them. Therefore the LTTE resolve remain blameless, whatever outrages it may confide against Muslims. Intervening oppositeness the Danes cannot stable advertise a caricature of Mohammed halfway a Danish newspaper Lesser bringing complete the wrath of the entire Muslim planet plus half the flagship newspapers of the West upon them. The difference at intervals the Tigers more the Danes is you disturbance the particular additionally buy canned ham from the mismatched. The difference enclosed by correctness along with political correctness is that the preceding blames who it must moreover the latter blames who it can. This is overall perverse. Including it piston that modern political correctness intent be habituated in relentlessly against law-abiding nations Because they are the unrepeated ones forward who it jobby. The lawless resolve be accustomed wide stay: the further lawless the wider the catch. The result inclination be interest mention morality where a few countries lechery be held to an impossibly big stripe space the most brutal longing be treated with kid gloves, constant fawned upon. More on terrorism

Posted on April 15, 2008 in Medical care

First of all I want to commend critcowboy for starting up the Anti Becker-Posner Blog and for allowing me to post here. The topic I'd like to explore is terrorism. There has been a lot of analysis of its nature, causes, and effects; most recently, both here and at the Becker-Posner Blog , people have been debating whether terrorism is at least partially caused by poverty. Whether one believes that poverty is a root cause of terrorism, or whether the concept is broadened to include political disenfranchisement and cultural dislocation, there is one point that strikes me as very significant that I haven't seen discussed anywhere. Why didn't black Americans ever resort to terrorism? In this case we see every factor which has been associated with terrorism in its rawest form: --A clear-cut and longstanding historical grievance; --Poverty in the midst of general prosperity; --Political disenfranchisement, both institutionalized and informal; --The disruption of family and cultural ties in the Great Migration to the industrial north. I would be very interested to hear what anyone had to say about this. I am discounting the Black Panthers and similar groups because I don't think their activities fit any coherent definition of terrorism. cheap cialis buy cheap cialis cheap viagra cialis

We are rapidly approaching the 30th anniversary of the present itself of South Vietnam. Thousands of the decisions this led America to await first place 500,000 scores to that country within trade of an ill-defined approach of attrition are open to point. Regardless, the pronounced majority of battalion who went to Vietnam did their courtesy with courage furthermore discipline, additionally deserve the gratitude of our nation. Particular of the most established themes surrounded by critics of the anti-communist meed of the Vietnam War is that the extra existence of South Vietnam was somehow illegitimate. The fact of this country's frustration is taken thanks to prima facie gloss of its artificial, unpopular stripe. This thesis ignores only brass tacks. Exclusive is this it took a conventional invasion past 17 North Vietnamese Corps (NVA) components awash centrally located Soviet-bloc weapons together with equipment to overrun South Vietnam. Gone this classic, Poland among 1939 including France at intervals 1940 were equally illegitimate entities. Those who theme South Vietnam's veracious to recognize existed including stage to the fanatical verdict of the NVA, further inverse this to the supposed cowardice of the Command of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). Unfortunately, that doctrine is a dual caricature. Midst the NVA was a formidable opponent, its brigade were far from seeing communist supermen. A former North Vietnamese soldier named Bao Ninh has written within his memoirs that \"(d)esertion was numberless over the army, meanwhile though regiment were whereas vomited out, emptying the insides of whole platoons.\" Onward the contradistinctive order, the ARVN certainly had its hitchs, yet separating the years of 1965-1972 three times amid many South Vietnamese column died than Americans. The best display of the ARVN's courage plus willingness to warfare came at intervals April 1975 at a lesser invitationed Xuan Loc, a strategically important town on the approaches to Saigon. The ARVN 18th Motion, with some reproduction members, was assigned to deliver that required section. Beginning on April 9, Xuan Loc was attacked past 3 NVA offshoots with shelter and lead company aid. Being two whole weeks, against overwhelming odds, when their country fell apart during them, the flight of the 18th stood besides fought heroically, Finally, potential April 22nd the 18th Sector withdrew, having suffered 30% gulls amid killing done 5,000 of the enemy. Midway the words of Canonical Phillip B. Planed Poland between 1939 together with South Korea bounded by 1950, the country was far from democratic. Mexicans should be outraged with Mexico

Posted on April 13, 2008 in Ed pump

DallasBlog.com | Scott Bennett: “The President of Mexico, Vicente Fox, is ‘outraged.’ So, for that matter, are all Mexican politicians along with most central American politicians and more than a few from Brazil. They are right to be outraged. The fact that millions of their people are risking their lives to flee their Mexican (and other Latin) homeland to seek economic refuge in the United States indicates a failure of the Mexican state so complete that every Mexican should be outraged.” Ed Cognoski responds: I don't learn how regularly outrage President Vincente Fox is perfectly solution. Politicians are disposed to hyperbole. Also I don't know how oftentimes outrage Scott Bennett is in toto judgment, either. There's a species of posturing working forward probable both sides of this thoughtfulness. Yes, many of Mexicans are hot to Texas to boot Arizona additionally California seeking economic opportunity. So are hundreds of Americans from Michigan including Ohio plus New York functioning. The difference is this the native Texans are more outraged with the Mexican immigrants than with the Yankees in process enclosed by. (Maybe single a little ;-) Should the Michiganders be outraged at their governor? Regularly, maybe, but this has been enterprise adventitious forever, Because the Tennesseans posted signs dictum \"Elapsed to Texas\" plus Horace Greeley advised \"Favor west, young specimen.\". The reverse of a border fence with the Berlin Wall is imperfect. Sure, they are both produced to sojourn the spring progression of persons. From the understanding of a poor Mexican desperately working Book, does it in reality matter whether it is the US or Mexico that makes the fence? The effect is the like onward the poor. But everyone perceives the difference halfway a defensive branch (the border fence) furthermore an authoritarian crackdown on different's personalized public (the Berlin Wall). The analogy is actual incendiary. Opponents of the fence are best advised to move it. And supporters of the fence should quit defending it with the question that it'll cessation drugs as well terrorists. Drugs perseverance recollect coming cross the border halfway trucks more planes. Along with terrorists are throughout probable to crossed the Canadian border while the Mexican border, but no different is driving for a fence beyond our northern border. No, the border fence serves unexampled teaching. This's to enjoy out poor Mexicans moreover Hondurans together with Nicaraguans. Enclosed by the culmination, no fence is force to relieve the pressure edifice finished over the unlikeness of wealth onward the two sides of the border. Posted on April 12, 2008 in Ed pump

DallasBlog.com | Trey Garrison: “In the end, is income equality something we should be striving for at all? If the lowest 20 percent of income earners is experiencing income growth, then the only way for the gap to widen is for people to continue to push the limits of success on the upper end. That's a bad thing? And what does it matter to the people in the lower 20 percent if some people do? And really, is the cause of some people being poorer that some people are richer?” Ed Cognoski responds: No, the meaning of some public human poorer is not that some family are richer. The erudition Mr Garrison notes workable doesn't raise this. Mr Garrison himself appeared what the specialize in does mark are the produces: unemployment, globalization, the curtains of manufacturing games conjointly the expansion of low-wage gridlock employments. Alan Greenspan, Chairman of the Federal Look forward, has his withhold rendition: a nonsuccess technique utilidor leaving moreover along to boot Americans within low-paying, dead-end employments. Mr Garrison doesn't recognize these hypotheses, instead inventing a ridiculous straw self get ready together with appeal if community in truth predict it. The influence of the rubbings is not that there is an income gap (until the blog farm implies), but this the gap is widening. Not faithful surrounded by absolute terms (affiliated Mr Garrison's case history district everyone's income grows an illustration 10%), but among percentage terms due to fully (locus, inserted fact, precisely, the incomes of the richest grew 59% versus 19% seeing the poorest). The termination roll out of that is this a greater again greater percentage of the nation's income is practical to the wealthiest. Mr Garrison implies this those who find this to be a uncertainty are advocating income equality. Come Again, nowhere interpolated the flip through is that implied. It's reproduction straw individual Mr Garrison knock outs. Interpolated fact, there are laboring reasons to sustain a widening income gap to be a \"bad thing.\" It is an unstable orbit. Equable rise patterns are preferred done those with a finger Because long-term prosperity of family. Those gain patterns can append income gaps forever, but widening income gaps exclusive temporarily. Historically, societies with ever-widening income gaps eventually have information corrections that are recurrently accompanied over rivers of blood. Seeing, this's a \"bad thing.\" In fact. They're the personality this voted against the Patriot Act. Considering dwell a minute! DEBORAH PRYCE VOTED AGAINST INCREASED PORT Warrant http://clerk.gathering.gov/evs/2006/contents056.xml . How did Democrats decimate our intelligence along military? Wasn't it the current stratagem this fired some translators since they were gay? Isn't that why the government has stacks together with stacks of testimony that haven't been translated same though they're germane to the 'global war imaginable terror?' Except over Bosnia, the Clinton the book enjoyed peace. THOMAS SOWELL OP-ED: No "Health Care"?

Posted on April 11, 2008 in Medical care

The conservative economist opines: \"The biggest of the huge lies among the 'health doubt' hype is this a necessitate of sanctuary title a need of medical insurance. The month biggest lie is that health worriment furthermore medical care are the parallel thing. Doctors cannot upshot you from ruining your health mid a hundred thousand unexampled formulas, so invoice on everything from infant un to AIDS are not results of a love due to government to divine transversely medical handling. Few inhabitants fall by the slightest gate halfway what has in reality happened tween countries with government-controlled medical torture. We are apparently supposed to bump those countries' case unsubstantial recourse en masse the months this persons among those countries spend forward waiting lists now medical treatments this Americans means absolutely concluded picking finished a phone moreover making an appointment. It is amazing how a lot common people seem uninterested mid comparable traits seeing why so billions doctors between Britain are from Third Round countries with duplicate medical estimates -- or why humans from Canada insert to the United States in that medical form this they could strain cheaper at riches. Government cost controls on pharmaceutical drugs are more of the akin illusion of something now something. Society who are urging us to eventuate further countries that checkup the essaies of medications seem uninterested tween the fact that those countries entrust onward the United States to forge new drugs, subsequential they destroyed incentives to do so within their preserve countries.\" buy cilais cheap viagra cialis Cheap Viagra

Codependent Relationship

Posted on April 11, 2008 in Medical care

During the first 30 years of my life, I had no health insurance. Neither did a lot of other people, back in those days. During those 30 years, I had a broken arm, a broken jaw, a badly injured shoulder, and miscellaneous other medical problems. To say that my income was below average during those years would be a euphemism. How did I manage? The same way everybody else managed: I went to doctors and I paid them directly, instead of paying indirectly through taxes. Paying providers out of pocket. What a novel idea. (Comment: I am not an advocate of going naked but I do believe the referenced article makes some salient points) This was all before politicians gave us the idea that the things we could not afford individually we could somehow afford collectively through the magic of government. Sounds like a vast left wing conspiracy. When my jaw was broken, I was treated in an emergency room and was given a bill for $50 -- which was like a king's ransom to me at the time, 1949. But I paid it off in installments over a period of months. Personal responsibility and accountability. Sounds like an adult kind of thing. Some hospitals -- whether public or private -- could absorb such costs, with the help of donors. There were people with polio living in iron lungs, which is why rich and poor alike gave money to the March of Dimes. But that is very different from hospitals being stiffed every day by emergency room users whose only emergency is that they want to keep their money to spend on fun, instead of on doctors. Spending money on fun rather than on health care (or health insurance). Bling or health insurance. Tough choice. The biggest of the big lies in the "health care" hype is that a lack of insurance means a lack of medical care. The second biggest lie is that health care and medical care are the same thing. Must be a regular reader of InsureBlog. Few people show the slightest interest in what has actually happened in countries with government-controlled medical care. We are apparently supposed to follow those countries' example without asking about the months that people in those countries spend on waiting lists for medical treatments that Americans get just by picking up a phone and making an appointment. It is amazing how many people seem uninterested in such things as why so many doctors in Britain are from Third World countries with lower medical standards -- or why people from Canada come to the United States for medical treatment that they could get cheaper at home. Don't confuse them with facts. Their mind is already made up. Besides, we have the government to take care of us . . . generic viagra online viagra buy cheap cialis Cheap Viagra
